12V 2A (Peak) Power Bank

Any recommendation for a 12V power bank with 2A peak current. I was searching and I couldn't find any reliable/known brand like Xiaomi. Any other options are welcome (like using 5V power bank with converter, but in that case 5V power bank should have at least 4.8A rated current).

  • How close does it need to be to 12V? What are you powering?

    • Its for a wireless modem/router. The spec says 12V with peak current of 2A.

      • +1

No one I know makes what you are after at a reasonable price. If you are handy, you could make it yourself for under $100 with a massive 5000mAh capacity.

I would use a RC car battery pack (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/151484787712) (and use an RC car battery charger to charge it), along with a high-efficiency voltage regulator (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/171465175084), and then solder on a cable to the output of the regulator to the modem (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261328820174), and cables to the input of the regulator with the right connectors for the battery. Then you could put the whole thing in a "project box" from altronics or jaycar and you would be good to go.

As it is 12V, you might consider using a DC car socket from supercheapauto, and then that gives you a generic 12V portable power supply that you could use for different things in the future. You could then use a cable like this (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/181847145618) to power the modem.

I imagine there would be a niche market for people to manufacture a product like this…

        • Thanks for the detailed reply with components and I really like the idea of building a proper/voltage regulated setup.

BTW, what do you mean by DC car socket? Is it just the socket or some sort of voltage regulator? If its a socket why can't we use the cable directly?

        • @ebbzuv: I mean that you could put a cigarette lighter socket on the case so that you could plug in other lower power 12v devices designed for use in the car. You could just use a cable, its totally up to you!

  • By the term "power bank", do you mean a battery power supply, or do you just mean a mains power supply?

I'll assume a battery supply. How long do you want to run the modem/router for?

A battery pack that can provide a peak current of 2 amps is only part of the specification, you also need to know the capacity in amp/hours, and from that, you can work out how long it will run the modem/router.

I think there should be what I'd call a 12v UPS available, but I can't find anything locally. A possible solution would be a car battery and a multi-stage charger, but it's a bit messy, not to mention costly.

  • Something like this?

There are quite a few different lithium packs available, but look out for reviews as some cheaply made lithium batteries turn into explosives after a few cycles.
