Travel insurance

Hi all I'm sorry for such a beginner question but how does travel insurance work? We've got flights/hotels booked for Auckland next week and was wondering if I'm still able to purchase it and what it covers. We're flying with Jetstar from Melbourne and after reading all their negative reviews on Facebook I'm starting to worry that our flight might get delayed and we'll have to forfeit our accomodation etc.
Can anyone point me in the right direction. :)

yeah, you can do it online and your covered from when you want it start.

TID or travel insurance direct is a website that offers reasonable travel insurance.

click on this link to be taken to their site.

here are 2 sites that have promo codes for possible discounts.

also, if you booked your tickets with a credit card then there might be an automatic travel insurance deal inclusivce. best to check with your provider.

Jetstar are pretty good. their rate of cancellations/delays are not that much worse than other airlines. the recent Bali deal is just bad luck for travellers.

Well, technically, travel insurance covers you as soon as you purchase it. For example: You purchase the insurance today. You break your leg tomorrow and can't travel next week, then the insurance will cover the cost of your tickets, accommodation…etc. Basically, the best time to purchase travel insurance is straight after any travel expense paid, not just before actual traveling as such.

TID is good, have been using it for years with many trips. Made a claim once, all good.

And yes, your credit card may have some sort of travel insurance included as well.

  • You really should have already purchased it.

Your travel insurance will cover you for lost bags, delayed bags, if you have to stay overnight and loose a night of accommodation due to flight cancellation, delays etc.

It will also cover you for accidents if you should get into one while on holiday (hospital fees, ambulance, flight home if necessary)

The main reason for purchasing it ASAP is if you break your leg tomorrow as NancyCat said they will cover your flights and accommodation.

Credit card travel insurance will usually cover flights but not much else and usually not what you didn't purchase on that particular credit card.

If you are skiing or doing other sports you MUST declare it as this will be extra. Depending on the company skiing can be included but if you want to do heli skiing or anything that is always extra.

  • did you pay with credit card
some credit cards have free travel insurance

  • TID

  • If you own a business buy an annual policy from your broker or insurer.

      50km ? - mine is 250km @ Aust Post TI.
      Which offers 50km - that's a drive around the corner ?

  • Zurich:
    Journey
journey means any trip involving travel exceeding 50kms
from the insured person’s normal place of residence or
business premises and will start from the time of leaving
their normal place of residence or business premises
(whichever is left last), and continue until their arrival back
at their normal place of residence or business premises
    (whichever is reached first).

  • Plus one for TID from me too.Easy to get an online quote and organise.

We have made a claim (illness whilst on a cruise) and it was handled quickly and easily.

However, regardless of which company you go through make sure that you read the Product Information Disclosure IN DETAIL so that you know whether the insurance offered is suitable for your needs, and take heed of the policy excess.

  • Thanks everyone went with TID :)
