Guild Wars 2 - Base Game Now Free

880

Guild Wars 2 now has a free base game with some limited restrictions.
Account type restrictions can be viewed here

Free accounts starts with less bag slots/character slots than paid accounts.
No map wide chat for free accounts.
Whispers every 30 seconds.
You can access the trading post but can't mail stuff to other players.
WvW restricted to L60 on free accounts.

GW2 is a pretty good game, I haven't really played it since release because of the lack of content (end-game) and WvWvW being a clusterfk.

Fantastic game, with the expansion coming out soon it's actually pretty worth it for new players to purchase the game now as you effectively get the base game for free. $50 USD for expansion + core game.

It's a great game, I get bored easily and I managed to put nearly 500hrs into the game, they released a ton of content every few months for free, but if you join at this point all those stories will be locked. I've also had many great battles in WvW of varying sizes.

I stopped playing because they released an expansion with base game free and no benefit for existing players until tons of people complained, then they threw some basic extras on, which I don't care for. I'll wait for expansion to come down in price.

    • Will all those stories be blocked for people who have bought the game but haven't started playing it?

      • Essentially yes, although some can be purchased.

Living Story 1 events are all over and cannot be purchased. There is a NPC in game that will describe the events for those looking to know more about the background.

Each episode of Living Story 2 (which is also complete and ends at what will be the Heart of Thorns expansion start) is free provided you logged in on any character within 2 weeks of the episode being released. Otherwise they can now still be unlocked via purchase.

I enjoyed Living Story 2 but not sure I would pay to unlock it all if I missed the free unlock windows (8 episodes in total I think).

The expansion Heart Of Thorns is a purchase over and above the base game if you already have just the base game - but as mentioned buying the expansion gets you the full base game for free anyway.

        • So there are alot of DLC for this then?
Extra stories etc… Does this content provide any end game reward, essentially making it a 'pay to win' system?
Or is it purely just for story purposes?

        • +3

@Hirolol: Just stories, challenges and cosmetic items. Anet have been pretty good in not going down the pay to win road.

      • +1

As @perkinma has said, I wouldn't bother paying for them. Without these stories though, provided you enjoy exploring and challenges, there is still easily a few hundred hours of game play without even touching PvP/WvW.

I think GW2 is a fantastic game, I'm think I'm over 3000 hrs played since release. This would be a great way to get an intro to the game.

As said the end game is not great but there are options, I don't PvP or WvW much but am running Fractals more often in anticipation of the legendary backpiece. Otherwise it can be a lot of grinding (as I guess most MMO's are).

I think the GW2 community is generally regarded as one of the best / friendliest MMO communities there is, IMO a massive plus for the game, I've enjoyed helping new players when I can.

The Sea of Sorrows server has a higher percentage of Aussie players (as I understand it) although since the mega server system was introduced your server choice doesn't make a huge difference except for WvW in which case you would need to research which servers are in which Tiers to choose. The top servers may be tough to join but if you check regularly it should be possible.

I don't like RPGs and not a huge fan of MMO and still logged 200+ hours on this when I bought it for $8. Well worth it and a new expansion is set to be released.

Absolutely fantastic game. Been with ArenaNet since GW1 Core… it's been almost 10 years watching this game (and community) grow. Definitely recommend it.

Been playing now for 3 years… It's a good game and as Someone mentioned above WvW, one of the game modes is a big mess right now with total imbalance due to the changes being made in peroration of the up coming release of HoT. Still a brilliant game, and not so grindy as per another persons comment, if you just want to get to level 80… 24 hours flat out.

Best waste of my life ever!!

I had 4 characters level 80 but stopped playing this game due to lack of end game content. It just got boring and PVP wasn't as fun as GW1. Now re-installing to see what has changed. Hopefully I'll be pulled back in. I've been looking to get back into the world of a good mmorpg.

Got this for $60 at launch, it's typical MMO but without subscription fee. Might take you around 100hrs playtime if you are going for the map completion badge (have to 100% every area in the game). After that you can run dungeons for cosmetic appearance (GW2 dress up simulator) or go fight in WvWvW battlegrounds which can range from rubbish to okay depending on how your team is composed on the day or if you don't want to do that you can go fight world bosses in huge groups by checking some of the spawn timer websites of when certain bosses will appear on the map. It's a good game to play during downtime since it's not very demanding and you don't have that constant pressure to keep up with the content releases that is in subscription MMOs, once you get Exotic gear (can pick it up pretty cheap from the trading post) the stats from dungeon gear is only marginally better to the point where it doesn't really matter if you have it or not. Don't expect it to be a WoW killer or anything crazy like that though as the game is very different.

Bought the game when it first came out, thought I'd give WoW a break and this seemed good
    paid $79.00.
Played it for 2hrs and quit, never went back. Shit game

    • The game is better than Wow IMO.

    • Same here. Then I went back and gave it a real go and found out how much I loved this game. Never went back to Wow after that.

  • It's not exactly a deal though is it? It's free forever now and it's not going to disappear anytime soon.

    • I initially added that in the body of the post. However, if you look at the revisions, one of the moderator's removed it so I assume it's fine by them.

  • I've been meaning to try this for many years now. I have many high level characters on World of Warcraft and after the debacle that was "Warlords of Draenor", I won't be heading back anytime soon.

    • Don't expect it to be a WoW killer, because it's not. It's fun for a few run throughs though, that's for sure.
