    Good on you Optus.

    • +6

Good for grannies who just email or surf recipe sites and have no idea about swapping SIM cards and registering all the time.

    • +8

but they expire in 1 month! Its the 2 year expiry that make is a good deal.

    • +14

      $130/22GB = $5.91/GB
      $20/3GB = $6.66/GB

Cheaper and much more convenient. Seems pretty good to me.

      • -1

        Cheaper and much more convenient.

Only if you get decent reception with Optus…

        • +1

For me Voda reception is terrible, especially indoors in shopping centers.

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/206239

        50c/GB in the past?

Anyway, my point was, it's not a great deal, it's an okay deal

        • +1

except that it was a loophole which got patched

        • +1

@lyl: yeah but people are still selling them on gumtree http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/sydney-city/android-phones/ch…

        • @kima: I don't know how he can sell it, as it needs to be activated to add the data? Are they all in his name?

        • @huntress_love: I don't know you would have to ask him. people are always selling things from here on ebay and gumtree. he was probably one of the ones doing it before it was posted on here and selling credits on ebay.

      • +1

        I'm happy with the 2 x 19GB Vodafone's I got from Harvey Norman the other day, $19 and 90 day expiry each. (well 16GB/90days + 3GB/30days)

EDIT: To be fair, these Optus deals aren't directed to the average savvy OzBargainer, so 22GB / 2yrs is a step in the right direction for grandma to keep in touch with the family and what not.

    • Voda USB was $9.90 yesterday at our local woolies in Canberra. I was told that the deal will end Wed, when optus half price USB stick will take its place.

    • +4

      20*24 = $480.

I'm away from home and require a WiFi hotspot at least once every 2-3 months, that's 8-12+ recharges in 2 years if recharges have one month expiry. Even then it's STILL cheaper to go with the long term 2 year expiry.

This is more a deal in that situation, it's good when used in a WiFi hotspot that you can just throw in the car/take with you everywhere and in term not have to worry about recharging for a whole 2 years. The 22GB it's self isn't insanely impressive, despite being better than Telstra's 2 year offer (18GB for $150 from memory), though it's still enough.

      tl;Dr: Enough data for day-to-day away-from-home use at a cost of $5.4/mo.

    • -1

I must agree. Even Optus sells mobile data Cheaper in Smaller Qty's.
MyPrePaid Daily Plus: $4 / GB (use over 24 hrs, between midnights)

Deal charges about $6 / GB

  • -1

Is it permanent change or just a promotion during certain period of time?

    • -5

      It's their normal price…

    • +1

It's a perm change, it's not a limited time offer.

Source: Spoke to two different reps in-stores. Just called them randomly.

  • -3

Shame it's virtually unusable still in so many places only a few kms out of the CBD…

    • was working great for me until 3 times the towers were broken

      • -1

At my place it's pretty crap, 1-2 bars indoors. At a friends a couple of km's away, I can't even make calls indoors, forget about getting a data connection… Works well in the CBD though…

        • are you with Telstra now?

        • @kima:

          are you with Telstra now?

I have a Telstra Wifi modem for when I need it, at home I'm on cable…

        • @jv:

Depending on just where you reside, jv, 700MHz Band 28 may change everything for you.

That map of Melbourne will not fully account for (likely happy) signal overlap.

    • +2

That's a real shame for your situation, but honestly in suburban eastern Melbourne I don't have any problem at all with Optus either on my phone or on my computer using mobile broadband.

  • Anyone know if these SIMs can make and receive calls and SMSes (and what rates)?

I mostly use data on my phone this would be great value if I could still receive and make the occasional call/SMS.

    • Would also like to know. This is much better value per GB than Telstra or Amaysim.

    • look at the optus $2 daily plus plan. I'm the same, I hardly make calls but use this for data. $2 for 500mb to a max of $4 1gb a day. Downside is that it is in 500mb chunks for each day its switched on. If not turned on it doesn't get used and has 6 month life. Just not sure if it can be used in a modem

      • Slip down the page a bit.

      • That's a lot to spend on data. I mean, youre essentially paying 60-120 per month for data. Surely there are better ways to spend that money.

    • Data-only on these.

  • -3

Lebara.vodafone (\optus)ntk for a far nicer $6gb ratio instead of 7-$10 per gb, however 3G.
$300 get 12*4gb a full year & unltd calls to boot , tethered right from easy Android. Why mess about w multiple sim card.

    • because !4G thats why…

    • And Lebara also charges data per MB. I'm fairly sure that Optus charges per kB.

From professional experience with Lebara, that is a big let down for me.

      • They both have changed to kB, only Vodafone much earlier than optus.
0.9gb per month (2 year plan) hardly screams "4G," though. Ditto $7gb

        • Sorry daver, you are indeed correct there. I wasn't aware at all that Lebara changed to kB billing.

I used Lebara about a year ago, and that's when they still had MB billing. 2GB vanished in an instant.

Edit: "professional" should've been "personal" in my previous comment.

  • Get 4 of Vodafone Pocket Wi-Fi 16+3GB for $76 only, every half year you get 16+3gb and with 4 FREE Huawei R207

    • I went the day that deal was posted, to 3 stores. None had stock. Some had the modems but not the 8GB bonus sims.

    • actually it's not. 3G expired in 1 month, 16GB expired in 3 months so you are still 4 months short altogether LOL

  • +1

Great for when you're mostly based overseas and just visiting Australia infrequently, especially because you don't have to worry about recharging every 6 months or losing your number.

  • Ooh. This kills Telstra's 2 year deal.

Do you have to activate it immediately though? Can I hold onto it until my current plan expires?

    • I believe it's there new standard pricing, in theory you can simply buy a recharge whenever in the future.

      • +1

But there's a catch if you're an existing Optus prepaid mobile broadband customer: these new rates do not apply to you UNLESS YOU CHANGE PLANS (and thereby forfeit any data you have).

Prepaid data (old) won't rollover to join prepaid data (new).

    • Telstra includes credit which can be used for things including data transfer. Does Optus?

      • Not sure, but I'm looking for single sim use, so I won't be transferring any data. $130 for 22GB versus $140 for 16GB. I know which one I'll be taking. This even beats amaysim.

        • Depends how much data you want or whether you want to transfer daily.

        • @wxyz234: A lot, and no.

    • To me Telstra reception is way better if you are using 3G. After using about 3 months of my Optus 12 month prepaid, Optus network became highly congested in one of the ares in the Perth cbd that I could not use it at all and Optus did not care about fixing it up and took me number of times contacting them to get to that conclusion. At the end I was just told maybe best I leave for another network and if I want to get a refund I'll need to speak to their accounts department and see whether I am able to.

It took Optus almost 6 months to change their plan after Telstra changed theirs. No wonder their business is suffering.

  • Anyone know whether you can use an optus $2 daily plus plan in a mobile modem? This would be $4 per GB and has 6 months expiry.

Maybe I should just keep an old iphone to use as a hotspot…then I could also use the free calls as well

    • If you're talking about the plan I think, it costs $2 for everyday you use data/calls/txt. Any days you don't use any data, make any calls or don't send any txts you're not charged a sent. Your stacked up credit expires after 6 months, or until all is used up at the rate of $2 a day whenever you use your mobile.

      • thanks dyl, I'm on the plan but thinking maybe this is a better option than the deal posted. Downside is that once the day starts you have to use the data, also not sure if it can be used in a mobile wifi thingy.

          (l) Use in mobile broadband devices is not permitted.

        • @daver: accidentally -1 and now cant +1 so here is my +1

        • +2

Stipulation by Optus to not tether at all, has shifted. They appear not fussed anymore after the original incarnation 4G $2 Days daily-allowance was reduced from 1GB to 500MB. This was confirmed in an Optus forum post. Sorry, but I'm not going to look for that specific entry now (or later).

Stipulation to not use SIM on $2Days/MyPrepaid in a broadband modem may still be there in the current T's & C's (I'll take your word for it, daver), but practical reality is likely in keeping with the 'not fussed'.

If you want to err on the safer side of tethering, indeed use a phone as a hotspot - but not an iPhone. Carrier tether-tracking is toastily baked into iOS. Carriers know - easily and explicitly - that you are tethering.

If tethering, tether from an Android device. Tethering is much more difficult for carriers to detect. Cheap is fine e.g. 'ZTE Fit Smart' from recent deals. (That phone also has 700MHz Band 28 support - mentioned above.)

        • @Tas:

Maybe I'm missing something here. I've been on the $2 plan for well over a year and even then I checked and they said tethering is ok. Never had a prob with it on my iphone. Just thought as I use a lot of data and no cable where I live, this would be a good option to have as a switch on switch off alternative

    • In theory you can, but they will detect and block your sim every now and then. I lost quite a few sim cards along with their credits back in the day it was called unlimited for $2. Good luck though.

    • That's what I do but buy the sims when half price so $2 a day 1 gig Still have 6 packs left. Just need to activate new sims a lot.

  • this is really good :) I use a optus wireless modem where I work :) that 2 years is awesome.
    Hope this pricing is permanent.

  • would this work at, between and in phillip island & melbourne?

  • Are these plans 4G or 3G?

Anyone have any experience with the Optus 4G Car WiFi Kit? Planning to sign up to a plan for extra mobile data when I need it (seems like it needs to be used with the car adapter.. not very useful for me. I need it on the go.)

  • Can someone explain to my how this works? And would it work with my phone? Thanks.

  • -3

Terrible service, decidedly average pricing comparatively … why are people voting for this again?

    • +1

Because for some people it is useful to have access to small bytes of additional data such as when your included phone data runs out. With long expiry it's possible to keep it in reserve until needed. In that case the deal makes sense and is a cheap option for data with a long expiry.

    • +3

Rock-solid Optus 4G signals where I live and work. Indeed, at home, I can rely on 140-150Mbps down and 30-40Mbps up when my shitty ADSL connection won't cut it (8-9Mbps down/1Mbps up). Where else can you prepay 22GB of Optus data for $120?

  • Would this work in a dual sim phone?

    • -3

Yes and no, all dual sim phones are shit, since they can only run 3G/4G on 1 sim at the time, while the other sim runs 2G. And starting next year Australian telcos are starting to shut down the 2G net.

      • +1

I see a lot of people here and on whirlpool, still spouting shit about dual sim phones. Your info is old, wake up to September 2015 please, I just got a Redmi Note 2 and it has DUAL 4G SIMs.

        • Yes but can you run both SIMs on 4G at the same time? As far as I know only 1 SIM can run 4G at the time while the other is on 2G.

        • The specs say dual 4G sims, I didn't purchase it for this at all, but I have researched this phone extensively.

  • Stop fighting kids.

  • This seems like a great deal with the long expiry date. I currently only have 300mb on my phone plan, but if i browse a lot i end up using about 1gb. Vodafone usually charges me $10 for an extra gb, but with this, i might be able to get through the year by paying only 50. Thats a 70 saving for me.

  • Does anyone know how long can you go without recharging your Sim and still keep your phone number with Optus?

    • +1

      6 months

  • +3

For anyone looking at getting this, in my opinion it is essential that you use it a device that is capable of the full range of optus LTE frequencies. This is the key to happiness on Optus.

In particular you want Band 28 (LTE700) compatibility. This is because this frequency gives the best range and indoor coverage. In addition by tapping the full range of frequencies you will be able to access frequencies that are less congested which will give you better performance.

The e5573 will do the trick as it supports FDD 1800/2600/700/2100MHz, TDD 2300MHz.

Some ozbargainers may be tempted to use an older 3g or 4g device. Don't do it, with the E5573 only $69, its well worth it.

    • +1

Agreed. Band 28 (LTE 700) is a must.

The E5786 (Cat 6) is another modem that also does FDD 700 MHz, but it is usually more than the E5573 (Cat 4).

I think Optus still only uses a max of Cat 4 speeds in most places outside of the Capital Cities.

      (4G Plus)

Although, Cat 6 and Cat 9 are available or coming soon to Most Capitals, etc:
      https://media.optus.com.au/media-releases/2015/optus-launche…

NB, Perth doesn't have Cat 6.

  • +1

This deal is recharge option only, not including any wifi modem?

  • Vodafone's $90 for 25 GB was too expensive for us. We switched to NBN recently; $45 for 100 GB with Belong for first 6 months (contract period), with included modem, then $55. Has dropped out a few times but only for a minute or two.

  • +1

This make amaysim looks so expensive.

  • Any deals going to grab a new SIM?

  • Hellstra still has better connection than Opstus, I use iPad to test amaysim (which is ops!tus) on train against Telstra, drop out rate are more frequent with Optus

  • +1

This is a great and very welcome deal in Regional WA where I am. Optus has recently turned on 4G where I live and Telstra only has 3G coverage. The Telstra Mobile Broadband prices are extortionate ($100 for 10GB, 90 Day expiry), but when you have no other choice you have to pay it. This deal from Optus is a game changer.

  • How do I use this in my dual sim phone? I have heard you can some how use a prepaid mobile broadband sim card in a phone

  • -1

Buy for 2 years is a bit silly imho, in a year or so we will all be getting a lot more gigs with standard plans probably by a factor of at least 4x
