Direct Power Ni-Cd Cordless Screw Driver $10 @ Woolworths

60

I thought it's worth posting it as haven't seen this item at this price for long time…
I spotted this at Woolworths Tea tree plaza…
What a bargain for $10; comes with more attachments and a moulded case as well.
One can't go wrong for $10. Haven seen this sort of bargain after ozito one from Bunnings before couple of years.
I asked staff, they told it may be nation wide.

What kind of material were you screwing into, was it wood? this device seems like it would be suitable for small jobs like electronics and not things that are really hard like metal, stone or wood. I think for the price it would be fine for simple jobs, if you want to screw stuff into wood or metal, rule of thumb is always use a drill

    LOL Ni-cd!

Ni-Cd is a perfectly appropriate choice for power tools. Their higher discharge current and much longer life (NiCd has a typical life five times that of NiMh or LiIon) makes NiCd batteries infinitely better than the newer types in high load, high cycle uses such as power tools in daily use.

      • Yet when you go to use it months later, battery's dead.

        • Ni-Cd cells have a relatively high self-discharge rate. That's why I said "daily use", they're good for professional and tradie tools that get hammered (pun?) every day and in that use they'll last longer 'cos they 'live' for a much higher number of charge/discharge cycles. They're but not so good for occasional home use, though. They will be dead after sitting for months, 'cos that's how Ni-Cd cells work. I guess that's why Ni-Mh and Li-Ion batteries often ship pre-charged, whereas Ni-Cd ones don't (or if they do, they're DOA).

Having said that, I have a couple of good Makita brand drills that use big 12V or 14.4V (can't remember which) Ni-Cd battery packs (the big fat orange ones) and they still have some charge even after months sitting idle… hmmm…

  • Enough to assemble some furniture from ikea for example?

    • Yes but you would still need to hand tighten at the end. This would not work well on self-tapping screws. Ideal for computing and electronics.

PS, not in all stores. Went to my local and they have never stocked them.

      • I've found that these little power tool and other back-corner gadget specials vary wildly from store to store. I've been in one supermarket where a bunch of power tools were marked down to $5.00, and another store an hour later where they were all still at full price. These sorts of deals seem to be very much localised to particular stores and store-manager's-discretion.

Best approach: wander over to the back corner any time you're in a woolies supermarket, particularly late at night when you're there to pick up a $4 roast chook and the manager has gone a bit nuts with marking stuff down! :-)

Enough to assemble some furniture from ikea for example?

Why would ANYBODY need an electric screwdriver to assemble Ikea furniture?

Use the tools that are supplied with the kit. If you get wrist strain from using an allen key in a pre-drilled whole into Chipboard or MDF, then maybe you need to get your daughter to help you.

      • Why would ANYBODY need an electric screwdriver to assemble Ikea furniture?

I see you have never assembled a kids bunk bed with 237 fine-thread metal screws, most of which need to be removed and replaced if you wish to move it to another room :-(

  • No clutch control. maybe not needed so much as max torque is so low?
Even so, probably enough torque to do damage when assembling furniture - you really need a torque limit setting for that.

    • Yes, you have to be careful with these cheaper cordless screwdriver without any form of clutch/slipping. Very easy to damage motherboard screws etc. Holding down my Ozito one near full lock will thread screw heads. You have to make sure you are only pressing in bursts near end.

Great present for my 6-year-old! He loves pulling stuff to bits.
