One of the most appreciated albums in Hip-Hop, and music in general. Must-listen for all fans of Rap, 40 minutes of bliss and Preemo beats.

By far his best album imo.

    Love this album!!

  • Widely regarded as the greatest rap/hip-hop album ever.

    • Regarded as his best album.

    • THE Best

      • +1

You can't disagree with a fact, therefore I do not think its a fact.

Either way the hip hop debates of the best/top 5/top 10 mc's/album's etc……. Is just played out as its all personal preference.

Interestingly enough Tragedy Khadafi aka the Intellegent Hoodlum coined the term Illmatic years prior to this album drop, If you have a listen to him you will notice pretty much where Nas got his style from.

        Salute!

        • I said 'Widely regarded as the greatest rap/hip-hop album ever', which it is…….regarded I mean, not absolute. There are many polls and lists that put this album at the top of the pile. It's not my personal favourite but it's certainly up there, in my opinion. Maybe you missed the word 'regarded'?

Thanks for the Illmatic/Khadafi reference. I'll give it a listen.

Great album. Listening now at work, only problem is its the clean version so lots of cd skip scratching interupting the flow 😕 but hey price is right 😉

    • Does Google play only offer clean versions of songs or something?

    • WTF

      • Deleted it. Normal version is $5.99 which is cheap but yeah…..

    • +3

it makes it almost unlistenable ! every 2nd word is flipped.

      • First couple of songs are the worst. Gets less noticable after that but definately annoying 😯

For those interested, there's a movie/doco about the album. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3549508/

    • I have seen this doco at the Rooftop Cinema in Melbourne. A must watch for all hip-hop fans who enjoy the likes of Straight Outta Compton or Notorious (the movie/doco). Do recommend.

  • how to hide free albums from our google music library?

Sometimes I only want to listen to only my uploads

    • Just download your uploaded songs to your device and then set your library to 'downloaded only'

      • thanks

but this solution is not quite as good as having a proper filter option in google music.

You need to download the songs to each devices…

A proper filter would have been better.

    • Right-click on the album and remove it from "My Library".

You still own it and can re-add it to your library later without paying for it.

      • yeah that is option but not ideal..

The reason is cos I got some xmas and classical albums from ozbargain and it is not that good to listen to them all the time.

Would be good if google let us just filter out our own songs..

Any idea how to suggest this to google?

Is this album youngin' friendly, or do I have to change a setting on Google music? They're scratching over any "rude" words?

    • Not especially radio friendly - a lot of swearing, although the album is more a commentary on life in the 'projects' than glorification of gangster culture.

      • I get that, but this version seems to be censored?

        • +1

Sorry, I misunderstood your question. Yeah, it's been heavily edited - I wonder if you can change the settings to play the full version?

Any one who digs this a few years ago Elzhi did a remake of this and called it Stillmatic. Its on spotify etc and its seriously dope.

    This is a track

      Incorrect.

Stillmatic is Nas' other classic album.

Elzhi did a mixtape cover of Illmatic titled "Elmatic" which is also pretty good.

      • +1

        Zing.

I would blame coffee but I don't drink it.

      • Yeah I meant Elmatic.

Honestly think its as good as Illmatic.

This is great - that Wild Style sample at the start of the album gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it, and it just gets better from there on in!

    • Almost as great as an airplanes engine being sampled at the start of NY state of mind.

  • This is a top 5 hip hop record. Even if you don't like rap, give it a shot.

  • +1

Anyone know how to turn off Google's swear filter? Most of the album is unlistenable because every second word is scratched out

    • +1

As mentioned above, its the clean version.

      Boooooo

Oh.. the guy who comes up eBay when I try and find a NAS.

AZ's verse on 'Life's a Bitch' is my favourite verse of all time. ALL TIME!

    • "Visualising the realism of life in actuality, f**k whos the baddest a person status depends on salary, and my mentality is money orientated i destined to live the dream for the peeps who never made it…" - wow! I've seen Nas 3 times and every time he does "Lifes a Bitch" i get a little sad that he starts the song at his verse.

    • Definitely top 3 guest verse ever. AZ is so criminally underrated, it's incredibly disappointing he didn't blow up.

  • +1

+1 but highly recommend checking out the uncensored version if you at all like what you hear here.

    • I don't know if the swearing adds or subtracts anything. The bleeps or lyric changes just usually sound weird. I prefer full versions because it is how the artist wrote and performed it, but a lot of the hip hop I listen to is from the era where swearing was infrequent if it was there at all.

Found the free remake of this mentioned above for free download (sorry mods!): http://www.datpiff.com/Elzhi-Elmatic-mixtape.229029.html

    • That's the ticket

    • Post it as a bargain

    • It's also on Spotify. Elzhi is pretty great.

      • Does free spotify let you download?

        • Locally on premium I think, you can't access the files or use them outside of Spotify though.

"Never put me in your box if your shit eats tapes"

Luckily, that is no longer a concern.

    • Speak for yourself lol

Great album, but this version is totally unlistenable - censored to the max in a way that ruins everything that is good in the world. I downloaded, listened, then deleted. No one should have to listen to a butchered album like this.

    • +1

Absolutely agree with this, was rapt to grab this for free. Started listening to NY State of Mind, one of my favourite tracks from the album and died a little inside. How this can be distributed, even for free, is bewildering and a true crime!
