HTC ONE M8 Android 6.0 Marshmallow Update

My HTC ONE M8 was sourced from Telstra (shows Telstra when you boot it). Is there any way i could remove any reference of Telstra of the phone because my understanding is that when this is done i could get the new Marshmallow update when released by HTC bypassing Telstra which takes it's time pushing the update - sometimes up to 12 months.

  • When the 6.0 update gets released for the phone, you would be able to obtain a stock HTC 6.0 ROM. it would require you to flash the ROM onto the phone, which may invalidate warranty. You would also be required to root your phone to do this, potentially stopping some apps from working. I'm not sure if you can "unroot" the phone after installing a custom ROM.

You don't need root to flash a new ROM.
You only need an unlocked bootloader.
You can flash an unrooted ROM.

  • Convert it to a Google Play Edition most likely.
You'll need to unlock the bootloader and flash a GPE ROM.
Best bet is to google something like
"XDA M8 Google Play Edition ROM"

    • but GPE also doesn't have Sense (in case OP wants it)

      • Is HTC releasing a Marshmallow ROM with Sense ?

        • Not yet, but they will, apparently later this year (most likely with Sense 7), so I guess if that's the case then OP will have to wait till that's released, and someone on XDA will make a minimally customised ROM out of that. Otherwise if OP can't wait then GPE will be quicker, just without Sense.

Add 6 months for Telstra to "test" the update..
(Once it is released, OP ought to be able to flash the raw HTC update with help from the geniuses at XDA.
