Here's the broadwell i5/4GB RAM/128GB SSD/ for $1190 if you want to spend less http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HP-L2Z73PA-Spectre-x360-13-i5-128…

    • +1

Yes, thats a good price, however keep in mind that it has a soldered RAM module, so you'll be stuck with 4GB. But having said that 4GB would be sufficient for most average users.

  • this or Macbook Pro Retina 13"?

    • where you can find a Macbook Pro Retina 13" (2015 model) at ~1600?

    • the HP is more versatile with the touchscreen/layout.

  • I have this right now, ama, i love it :)

    • How is the battery life if you dont mind me asking?

      • Official is 12 hours…maybe 9 more realistic?

        • Thats pretty good.. not sure if I should go for SP4 or this.

        • @amir aljaberi:
If you really want to write with a pen, go with the sp4, this laptop isn't really made optimally made to write with. For example, with the SP3 and 4, on OneNote when you use the pen it automatically changes to pen writing, with this laptop, you have to manually select pen. It gets really tedious when you're using for uni everyday.
They don't make a pen specifically for this laptop, rather you need to buy a HP or Dell pen.

        • -3

@rickyygee: I know this might be a shock but did you ever consider that a laptop is not the correct tool for the job in that situation?

        • @Diji1:
Yes, that was what i was saying, no?

      • When i'm at uni i usually have wifi on half the time, and half the time i just read PDFs so i put it on airplane. I can easily get through a 9-5 day without a charge on 60-80% brightness, light browsing and word files, PDF Readers open.
Anyhow, 5 hours with wifi, youtube etc, up to 8-10 or more on days i don't need anything.

Oops sorry, accidentally down voted you….

    • Did you get a pen to go with it, and if so how is it?
I have a SP3 and the pen is fantastic, my dad wants one but he doesn't need the portability of a Surface and he thinks the screen size is too small for him.

      • If he wants to write on it a lot, definitely get the SP series, i bought a pen similar to the adonit jot pro, it works fine but after using my friends SP3 you can definitely tell the difference.
If it helps, i used to use the ipad mini and the same pen, when i changed over i was really frustrated with the difference, you could tell it was made to be a 2 in 1, a laptop and a normal tablet, not as well made for the writing experience like the SP series does.

        • Have you used an active pen with it? (one with a battery, hover support, pressure sensitivity, etc.) I was hoping to buy one like this if they are compatible. The specifications strangely dont specify if the pen will work, but others say it does.

        • @weesals:
this pen works but i've heard review where you need to press down really hard in comparison to the dell equivalent. I don't have it myself but the review

        • @rickyygee: Thanks! I got to try it in person today, but they only had a pen from a demo Spectre x2 which unfortunately didnt work (I think its Wacom not Synaptics). Thanks for the video, the Dell pen definitely looks to be better!

  • Just a quick question; for a work-related computer… office, internet, youtube, music via connecting to amplifier and connect to smart TV via HDMI…. is this okay. Thought it was reasonably priced https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/laptops/lenovo/l…

every laptop does those things. If it's a work/office machine, I'd go into JB and try some keyboards and trackpads, find something comfortable. Hardware-wise there's barely a laptop that won't do what you want there.

      • You're right. Going today. But just wondering if that was good for its price. I've seen other HP machines etc that were 500g, or 4gig ram at that price. Apart from actually feeling it, wanted reassurance thats its a good buy for the specs at least

        • Picking a laptop with an SSD rather than a HDD would give you a machine that's more responsive and starts up more quickly. As normal mechanical drives get fragmented, they really slow your computer down. Cheap laptops will come with bottom-end 5,400rpm drives too.

  • doesn't have any type c ports, not future proofed. Other than that, a great laptop overall!

    • I'm sure there will be USB adapters in the future for some time.

I have this version and am very happy with it. It is nice to be able to swap between keyboard and touch screen and the ability to turn it into a tablet or tent mode is also helpful. (Although it is a bit heavy for a tablet; you wouldn't want to be doing that a lot).

The battery is pretty good, but I mainly use it in the evenings and then put it on to charge before I go to bed.

The biggest issue I have is the SSD size; when my phone is 128Gb then 256GB is a touch mingy. I've just bought a 128Gb SDXC card for it.

    • I feel like the ports should really be 1 x USB 3.0 and 2 x USB-C

      • what would you be using them for? (usb c that s)

        • I just feel like we should've moved on from USB 2.0 already.

        • +1

          @BTRaynes: We have, to USB 3.0. :)

  • Can I get a discount gift card?

I got the 4007tu version on the dicksmith ebay sale at 30% off for $1199 delivered with i5 256gb 8gb ram. Not the skylake processor. But for that price, I cant ask for more. Great laptop

You made a pretty good buy there! That's something to my liking…

    • Bought the same thing - I couldn't be happier

  • It's a good deal. I bought the 5500 i7 processor one with exactly the same configuration for the essentially the same price.
But my experience has been mixed.
    Pros:
    touch screen
liked the sturdy build and the flippable screen

    Cons:
    Get's really hot and noisy
a bit heavy to be used as a tablet (need to keep it rested on a surface)
battery life isn't that great, nowhere close to 8 hours if you are using it normally.

    • +1

"normal" use (facebook) and/or watching movies you will get 8+ hours easily…you cant expect that kind of battery life if its being used at full load and running hot. i.e. gaming.

  • Can it take more RAM?

    • what exactly will you be doing on an ultrabook that requires more than 8gb of ram?

      • Opening lots of browser windows along with Lightroom is one example. Running heavy apps like Photoshop or Premiere is another. Yes, people do use those apps on ultrabooks.

      • Well, it's an i7, meant to be work horse.

    • No, RAM is soldered.

  • I've never been a big fan of HP after my girlfriend's laptop had a keyboard defect which they wouldn't cover as "cosmetic" defects aren't covered by the warranty. Thankfully JB replaced it. Unsure whether this policy has changed but it's deterred me ever since.

    • was a key sitting a bit wonky or something but still functioning ok?

      • No - hard to explain / lack of full memory but the keyboard didn't sit quite right and when opening the laptop it caused a bit of pressure on an adjacent panel (I think the speaker grill) which caused it to warp when opening. It looked hideous and exposed some of the insides yet was "cosmetic".

    • I would have to disagree, I've had a hp 13 folio and its been flawless. No slow down so far, most laptops I've had in the past get much slower as they age. Everything it does just works. Been used every day since purchased. Wife throws it round like a Frisbee.
Had a couple of HP business laptops from my work for support, they have also been very robust and extremely reliable. Can't comment on this model as I haven't owned one, but HP in general- excellent.

      • Yes; their laptop's are generally fine but as the only manufacturer that doesn't support cosmetic defects - I find it quite absurd.

  • Would people recommend this over the XPS 13? Both reviewed really favourably..

    • what I have read both are really good.
really the difference is do you want to be able yo use it like a tablet (which is prob good for when sitting on the couch watching tv etc) then pick the HP.

    • Both are good…the touch screen and ability to turn the screen right around is actually very handy. i.e. makes a great stand for watching movies.

    • +1

If you want the smallest and the lightest 13" ultrabook then get the XPS, but if you want fairly portable ultrabook + tablet hybrid then the spectre. IMO build quality and "premiumness" wise they are both at the same level so it boils down to what you want.

    • +1

Thanks guys. Can't afford either but generally curious!

  • This is a fantastic laptop, in my opinion far better for the price than the Surface Book. Especially great if you pick up the active pen for it.

  • +2

Having owned this laptop (i5 broadway) for a few weeks.
No many complaints in terms of the value compared to other ones like surface and xps

Good touch and decent battery life.

    The BAD:
scratchy sound issues (win 10 and all updates do NOT fix it, quite a joke for a flagship and brandnew)
    Screen reflective/glares in the outdoors
Can get warm despite aluminium body
The trackpad is not as responsive as surface and too big, easy to make mistakes (I have turned off two-finger zooming as accidents all the time when my right finger simply just navigate and want to hit the left click with the other )

Hope it helps in decision making

  • good deal, but not nearly half the price of the new sp4 /w typecover and pen+tablet interface.

  • Friend just got an Asus M Core ultra book, with 4GB memory and 128GB SSD. Performance is impressive, processor has lots of grunts and it has 3800 x 2560 resolution on 14" touch screen, no fan so it's totally quiet. For A$930 I think that Is probably much better value for most users.

    • can u tell me where he got it from?

  • I have spectre 4014tu i7 model and is overall a good laptop +tablet.its track pad is not as responsive as of surface pro but the build quality and performance is excellent. i am looking to buy a screen protector for that as I normally use it in tablet mode.

Most of the benefits of the Surface Book for half the price? I assume you didn't compare the screen resolution as well? (3000x2000px vs 1920x1080px)

  • This deal ends today, as I was told JB's 15% off computers ends today (19/10).

  • Just had a walk around today, and $1697 is a pretty good price. Annoyed I didn't leap on it actually… what do you think my odds are of negotiating this at JB on the weekend?
