I would avoid these sort of rain jackets, you get wetter from perspiration than you would from light rain.

what if im wearing it with a t shirt?

      • +10

        your t-shirt would get wet

Could be ok for a small temperature range with no physical activity. If it does rain you feel every drop of cold rain hitting you.

        • yea im up in cairns and ride my bike about 15-20 mins to work.. so should be perfect for me to wear on top of my clothes if it rains or i could jus fold it n chuck it in my bag.. better than getting drenched like i did today…

          @brizzy:

You should be able to get a proper cycling jacket for similar price.
You want a full front zip at least, so you can unzip and ventilate when the rain stops.
Nylon with breathable PU membrane is best, at this price level. I'm guessing the Kathmandu has the PU membrane, otherwise it is junk.

Cycling jackets also have reflector stripes, rear pockets, arm-pit vents, velcro-adjustable sleeves, short front and longer back.

          See http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/au/en/lusso-giro-rain-jac…

Here is a $20 one which should at least be better than the Kathmandu:

@brizzy: probably the best thing about ozbargain comment section.
this one time the comment section on a woolworths weekly catalogue turned into the difference between metamucil or just generic psyllium husk.
turn out u can get psylllium husk and considerably less then the outragious price metamucil charges at chemist warehouse.

ozbargainers are so knowledgable and its always best to ask in the comments before purchases as the ozbargain community is always willing to help and share their knowledge!

        • @Hirolol: dam straight.. i aint payin for branding .. only actual ingredients .. not that id ever buy metamucil

        • @brizzy: for hikes I recommend a nice quality poncho . They breathe best and reach below the knees. I also have rain pants for certain places. I'd return the Kathmandu rain jacket , I hate my Gore tex shell jacket, so compact but so useless.

    • what sort of rain jacket do you recommend?

      • If you are planning to use it for physical activity like hiking or a skiing, any jacket with a waterproof breathable membrane, i.e. eVent or Gore-Tex, is preferable. Or a jacketed with a breathability greater then 10,000. A good thing to avoid is a jacket that does not rate the breathability . Aldi has some breathable jackets occasionally. My partner uses a $80 rain jacket with a Chinese copy of goretex that works great!

Still think Kathmandu products are heavily over priced even for the reduction of this thin rain jacket to $50, I'll pass and leave it for others.

    • Have you actually tried this rain jacket?
$50 dollars for a quality rain jacket is reasonable.

      • Yes sir/madam and I wouldn't say it is a quality rain jacket, it is an okay quality and if this was made of goretex material with the original price tag $150 then reduced to $50…sure, count me in for the bargain!

Kathmandu is selling their items based on their brand name, but then if brand name was my criteria, I would go for ralph lauren or tommy Hilfiger instead when they are on sale.

        • All the brands are selling their products based on their brand name, not just Kathmandu. Apple won't sell a phone for $300 and Xiaomi won't sell their phone for $1000+.

Good luck with those american fashion brands and they are not outdoor brand, you better compare with The North Face/ Patagonia/ Helly Hansen.
Can you get a The North face rain jacket under $100 or a gortex jacket at $200 on discount? Yes, maybe in the outlet for the XL in the american size.

Your examples are excellent, Ralph Lauren (I am sure you meant POLO not the Black Label range) and Tommy Hilfiger are the brand selling their products with their brand name, not the quality of fabric or design.

It said that before a mod updated the title…

    Edit nvm i checked link

  • I can't tell you personally, but a mate of mine had a kathmandu rain jacked, and was breathable, he never cooked inside. (not sure whether is the same as this)
I was so hyped and bought a deal at aldi for a rain jacket. get's you poached in seconds.. eeewww. I rather be wet from rain.

    • I should get mine delivered soonish .. ill let you know if it is

    • People read too much into "breathable" . It means some vapour can get through, so if you are not sweating too much, and its not raining, it will dry out.
But if it is very humid, or actually raining, it doesn't help. A wet raincoat cannot "breathe". This is why cycling jackets have vents and mesh lining.

When you hang it up to dry, a non-breathable fabric (e.g. old PVC raincoat) needs to be aired on both sides.

The most breathable jackets are "showerproof" or water resistant, rather than waterproof.

  • not sure there are any bargains at kathmandu.

this reminds me of the uniqlo ultra light parkas, except without the benefit of the full zip. standard price is $50 but wouldn't call that a bargain either.
