What Are You Planting in The Garden?

Curious to hear what everyone is planting in the garden. Vegies, fruit, herbs, or just flowers etc…

I have:
Sweet corn
Parsley
Mint
Capsicum
Blueberry
Strawberry
Rocket
Celery
Spinach
Broccoli
Cucumber
Tomatoes

Have never had luck with lettuce as it bolted very quickly regardless of when and where I plant it.

We only have lemongrass growing here, but a friend of mine has my dream garden. She grows carrots, kale, tomatoes, rainbow chard / silverbeet, mint, coriander, blackberries, raspberries, loganberries, rocket… heaps more.. there's so much deliciousness in her backyard. I don't understand how she doesn't sit out there and munch everything bare constantly. I would >_<

I just tried sorrel for the first time yesterday, straight from her veggie patch. It was so full of flavour - like crisp green apple. The tartness and flavour would be great in salads or to add some freshness and zing to dishes. Can't believe I'd never tried it before.

Got any pics of your veggies growing and your set up? Would be cool to see how everyone does theirs.

I've got corn, watermelon, pumpkin and beans in the vege patch. In the herb bath there is lemon grass, thyme, parsley and mint. Next to the fence an avocado tree (grown from pit) and lime tree.

Tomatoes didn't come up this year. :(

Rhubarb, watermelon, daikon (white radish), capsicum, carrots, grapes, asparagus, corn, blackcurrants, blueberries, assorted fruit trees. Rocket and coriander grows like a weed here. If one plant develops to seed stage it sows the entire garden bed.

My tomatoes and sunflowers self seed. I don't eat tomatoes that much, but damn, the plants just keep popping up all over. Must be commercial potting mix bringing the seeds in. Sunflowers are rather nice and produce a LOT of seed.

I've had a lot of failure with broccoli and brussels sprouts. Year after year the plants become infested with aphids (sprouts) or are eaten alive by green caterpillars. My garlic has always been a bit disappointing. Its grows, but the bulbs are rather small.

If you find vegetables bolting to seed then try sowing seeds further apart. If plants feel under stress they'll try to develop seeds first. I've seen this with daikon, beetroot, and spinach.

    • So envious…
my coriander and parsley didn't make it.
I have bought them from bunnings and grown them in those ikea pots…could that be why?

I find some plants are fussy about pots. Could be the potting mix, the small amount of soil in them, or the difficulty in keeping a good level of moisture. I have had plants that thrive in the ground grow miserably in a pot. Self watering pots have for me been a special problem.

We have basil and parsley in the kitchen window sill.
We had good snow peas over winter in the garden.
Our cherries have all been stolen by birds and possums because I was away when I should have netted the tree…
We got our first orange from a tree planted a couple of years ago. I should really water and feed it, but it is right down the back of the garden.
Got bad leaf curl in the peaches and nectarines, so looks like a very reduced crop this summer. Will need to be diligent spraying them next spring.
We have some apples and pears coming on, and some apricots.
The almond tree has its first decent crop - about 60 fruits. I need to work out when to pick them and how to deal with them to get good almonds.
We have cucumbers and tomatoes coming up in pots but I think they will be too late for a big yield, but we should get a bit and it was left over seed from a couple of years ago anyway.
The thing going great guns are raspberry canes. They are going nuts propagating and the largest has set some berries. So we will likely get a dessert or two this year, but looking very good for next year.

    • my parents used to have raspberry's growing along the back fence. I remember picking them every 3 days or so and averaging a 2 liter icecream container worth.

      • I was a bit hesitant to plant them out, not knowing if they would go like blackberries and become an overwhelming weed. But I visited my stern old neighbour who is an expert gardner and he showed me his wild patch and gave it his blessing as one of the plants that grow especially well.
My biggest trouble with gardening is I know nothing and am a dill!
I like it enough to plant things, and enough to water most of the time, plus a bit of weeding. But I really struggle with reading lots and translating it into real world gardens. Most of the books and websites I have researched don't seem to align with what I see in my patches of dirt.

So I am lucky to have a cranky neighbour who I can ask questions from.
I think if I lose him I will join the local community garden so I can meet some other local experts - I really think the written stuff in this case is not very useful. It is a thing that needs one on one education.

You and I are lucky we had parents to grow some things. I remember picking passionfruit and lemons, both always a reliable crop, plus occasional other garden treats. I am trying to give my own kids the same memories and it is working so far.

        • totally agree with the last point

my mum, born just after the great depression and whose mum was Scottish, is practical. always huge garden for a degree of self sufficiency. her garden - 3 apple trees, lemon tree, apricot tree, plum tree, passionfruit vines, grape vine, raspberry patch, kiwi fruit vines, + multiple vegetables. tomatoes that were made in to sauce/chutney, fruit was preserved, etc etc.

makes me feel guilty that my garden is so insignificant in comparison( and the effort I put in to it).

  • chillies

and whatever left over seeds i get from the veggies i eat. everything is pretty much self-seeding

  • Get more money from the special crops, but the neighbours keep hopping the fence and stealing them. Can't go to the cops either!

I have some veggies, herbs and 2 indoor plants -a lucky bamboo and lily. I'm in Victoria, so cool climate but no frost where we are.

We've just moved house, so we're starting our veggie garden from scratch again.

    We've currently got:
    - Tomatoes,
    - Silverbeet,
    - Mint,
    - Basil,
    - Thyme
    - Spring onion,
    - Oregano
    - Parsley
Most went into pots before we moved and I'm now in the process of transferring some of them to the new garden.

The broccoli plants have been composted because the caterpillars attacked them and there wasn't much of the plants left :(

I've also had a few surprise plants from the compost:
    - A potato plant growing with the basil
    - Two random plants that looks like they could be pumpkin or zucchini plants? I'm leaving them in to see what happens
    - Like Cluster, I keep having tomatoes pop up everywhere!
    - Random mushrooms growing with my parsley, but I think they're the inedible type.

I wish we had fruit trees (maybe one day…)

  • Pretty cool to see a fait bit of people into it!

  • Bringing this back to life as I plant for this autumn/winter season

Over the last year I have been digging small holes in my garden beds between the vegies and putting in food waste. Sort of similar to a compost bin, but let the earth do the work. Preparing the beds for this seasons planting, i mixed it all together. looks like the quality of the soil is a lot better than the bagged garden soil/potting mix. I will do the same as i plant this time around, ready for spring/summer.

What does everyone do? Share some tips :)

  • Here near Sydney we have had 3 months of unexpected warmth, which saw my straggly tomatoes burst into giant tomato godzillas. I kept saying, "there is no point to all this, the frosts will come before any fruit matures." But I have been wrong and we are getting what is effectively a second crop, although the first was so poor it still isn't too much.
I have some cucumbers similarly hitting a growth spurt, and my daughter brought in some more fresh raspberries, which are months after the main crop.

    • Agree! The tomatoes are putting out again just when I was thinking time to rip them out. Lucky I procrastinated :)
