    joke post or serious ???

    Looks like standard price…

    • +13

There is no reason to charge for these standards. These should be made available to the public for free

      • +3

        swoosh

        • +1

Some are free, see below comment.

I do agree though, the standards committee is not for profit & the people who write these are volunteers.
Whilst the sole distributor charges whatever they like, take it up with them not me ;)

  • many people use standards.

    • -1

      Many others don't.

      • +1

Many are referenced by laws at all levels, particularly the building codes. Local government similarly charges for access to much of it's planning information. Most people who use them will be from a STEM career.

I don't think you will find too many OzBargainers who are interested in Australian Standards. Just because a particular item is cheaper than they usually are doesn't mean that it should be posted.

What if Boeing had a sale on 747 airplanes. Normal cost $300 million, on special for $200 million. Should this be posted?

  • Hit the + too soon.

I added the 14001:2015 and 9001:2015 in my shopping cart and used the code and got a code invalid message:

This code is invalid or has expired.
NB: Promocode discounts may not be available where SAI Global does not have rights to the copyright or where products are already discounted.

you can revoke your +. Go to the votes tab at the top of the deal.

Well, ummm, people who use standards should have good attention to detail.

This deal is for "30% off All AUSTRALIAN Standards"

The 2015 versions you tried to buy are probably the ISO Standards, which are not directly applicable to Australia.

AS/NZS ISO 14001:2004 is the latest AUSTRALIAN Standard
      http://infostore.saiglobal.com/store/Details.aspx?ProductID=…

AS/NZS ISO 9001:2008 is the latest AUSTRALIAN Standard
      http://infostore.saiglobal.com/store/Details.aspx?ProductID=…

AS/NZS 9001:2015 is at draft stage, closed for comment but not published yet.

HINT: In the search system, click the "IN [All Publishers][v]" drop box and choose "AS" - that will limit the search to AUSTRALIAN Standards that are relevant to this deal.

      • Thanks :)

Got confused because SAIGLOBAL contacted me recently asking if I'll be transitioning to the AS/NZS******:2015 standard this year.. Just assumed the AS standards are already available.

When I was at university, as part of a Software Engineering unit one of these Australian standards was required. These were not sold in the University bookshop but I had to go into the city to purchase them. When I got there it was a 50 page document and it cost $100+. Screw that I thought - there were over 50 students in the class so I purchased it and then made photocopies for most of the class. I only charged photocopy fees for them but got bought plenty of drinks at the university tavern ;)

I work for a uni and all the AS/NZS and ISO standards we need access too we can get through the SAI portal on the library webpage.

      • Me too. I was at tafe, had access to SAI Global and scientific journals as part of the library registration. I downloaded a bunch. They're time limited, but that doesn't seem to stop non-adobe pdf programs from reading it

    • Yep, I'm surprised you didn't have access to these standards through your uni library. Maybe your lecturer forgot to mention that?

  • For those wishing to legally get more free standards…. "In order to promote public education and public safety, equal justice for all, a better informed citizenry, the rule of law, world trade and world peace, this legal document is hereby made available on a noncommercial basis, as it is the right of all humans to know and speak the laws that govern them."

    https://law.resource.org/pub/au/manifest.au.html

    • Doesn't include most current Australian Standards. There is a mishmash of IEC, ISO, and various other stuff that they have scraped off the internet from pirates.

For those wishing to legally get more free standards

And hardly legal, anyway. Not in the slightest.

There are many ways to get warez copies of Standards, but this is certainly not the place to discuss it.

For me, this is probably the best deal I have seen on OzB for a while.

The sort of work I do requires reference to a wide range of standards, even if I only need a certain clause or 2. At ~$100 a standard, it can add up quickly.

As there is somewhat of a monopoly on the supply of Australian Standards, you don't really see many discounts on them - hence when they come up it is a good time to update your standards library and obtain copies of those that are frequently referenced but you may only have 1 or 2 excerpts from them.

  • wish i could get 30% off settlements…

I like how the pool fence Standard costs money.

SAI is a huge rip-off. Europe, however, is worse. In my field, 10 years ago there were about 20 Standards that covered everything. At $50-$150 a pop that is a lot to invest in then update every few years. Now, there are three times that many Standards and they cost more like $150-$200. It is a monopoly and it sucks.

I have found though, that often, ISO Standards are cheaper in the Italian and Danish online Standards shops. I am sure it is a loophole which will be closed at some stage.
