Outer Boundary Fencing Permits?

I am planning on making a fence around the outside of my property in Melbourne.

At the moment there is a 30-40 cm brick wall around the outer boundary of the property. The property is on a corner of a small side street and has windows in all the bedrooms facing the street. There is approximately 2m between the windows and the property boundary.

I want to replace the wall with a wooden fence 1.8m high (or thereabouts) for privacy purposes.

Do I need a permit to build such a fence?

Best to pay a surveyor to peg out the boundaries to make sure your new fence is definitely in the correct place..could save a lot of problems in the future.

    • Agreed.
I'd even get a few quotes, while asking the fencer's opinions.
I wouldn't waste their time, but I wouldn't take their word as law, either.
The more advice you can get, the better.

  • Talk to your local council planning department. I looked in to this a few years ago when replacing a front fence. Any high fence required 30% spacing(eg picket fence) or a recessed cove of 50cms every 3metres of fencing.

It varies council by council. Check their website for details.
