good deal, too bad they're not compact cameras

EDIT: i think the D5000 is actually cheaper to get on ebay than any of the cashback-eligible retailers. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/BrandNEW-Nikon-D5000-DSLR-12-3MP-Came…

The other cameras are probably cheaper on ebay too. If you don't mind buying electronics on ebay.

errm the whole idea of a DSLR is that you can change the lens and use professional lenses.

they also have a larger sensor to capture what you're taking photos off better, the whole idea behind a DSLR is that they are NOT smaller!!!! they are more of a professional range.

these cameras complement your standard point and shoot, i've given you a +1 for letting people know getting it from smaller dealers who typically import it directly, is typically more than a couple hundred dollars cheaper than those who have Australian sourced products..

but bad point about the size!

      • maybe one day there'll be a compact DLSR?

        • -1

FYI they recently have. Google Micro Four Thirds. I believe Olympus and Panasonic have some in their range.
          Interchangeable Lenses and Larger Sensors.

  • ironic that this site http://becextech.com.au advertises it for $919 as a ozbb google ad but isn't eligible for the $200 cashback

  • I bought it for less than AUD1100 (body only, after cash back) with TWO years NIKON AUSTRALIA warranty and some free goodies from a reputed Camera dealer in Sydney - peace of mind, eh?

With importers: No Cash Back, No Nikon Warranty (second year), No local warranty (first year), Waiting time (shipping - cost & risk), Possibly import duty (I am not sure) as well.

Does Nikkor lens have international warranty by default? Bodies don't…

Nikkor lens do have international warranty.

aud$1100 after cashback is not a bad price, however, still not good enough.

dealers (those importers as you called) like dwi or dd-electronics offer much better value to price.

      1. they do have local warranty!
      2. it's true there is no cashback for the camera bought from them. however buying from them, you do not even care about "cash back". their prices can easily beat the cash-backed price offered by the local dealers.
      3. it's true 1 year warranty is the default option. however, even counting in the second year warranty cost, they still offer a much better value to your money.
      4. the online dealers like DWI and DD enjoy excellent reputation. (you can search the topic in the whirlpool forum)
      5. waiting time~it is simply amazing. it only took 24 hours for them to ship the camera (yes, i bought a D90 with a kit lens from one of them) using DHL to my Door. i live in sydney. some guys living in the rural area of queensland received their camera and accessories in 2-3 days. still quite amzing.sure if you can not wait for 24hours, the local is the only option for you.
5.Still, including all the cost (shipping, extra warranty) their prices are still better than the one from locals(even after cashback)
      6. as to the import duty, it depends on which dealer you buy your camera from. i know a guy was not charged import duty on his 7D and an expensive lens (the lens already exceeded AUD1000, let alone 7D). usually we are charged import duty on any goods of value over $1000.

thousands of aussies around the country are buying DSLR from these dealers. peace of mind, eh? check yourself: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1303720&p…

but i would prefer not to buy a dslr on ebay.

by the way, i personally reckon the extra warranty is really a waste of money considering you pay about $300 for three years extra warranty of a good quality camera worth about $1000…sort of ridiculous.

      • Be careful with DWI as I bought a video camera from them and after they assured me of careful packaging (look at the photo examples on their web site of boxes within boxes), they instead send the delicate video camera with one layer of bublewrap and a single sheet of brown paper. Six out of the 8 corners suffered severe impacts. DWI refused to answer my queries and ignored the photos I emailed them.

I don't know how you feel about it, but I generally want new items that haven't been dropped multiple times with no external protection.

        NOT happy Jan.

      • I totally agree with you… It is cheaper from the "dealers" on the day you buy…But long term?

Considering it's a Nikon you probably won't be using the warranty either…

I had trouble getting warranty honoured by "dealers"…

So It's a good deal for those who prefer to buy locally…

        • agree, for the people who prefer to buy locally, $1100(after cashback) is pretty good.

      • As you suggested, I probably would be buying Nikkor from dealers coz of the international warranty by default.

don't mean to shit on your thread, but my personal preference for DSLRs is Pentax. Check out the entry level Pentax DSLRs which offer a lot more bang for you buck.

    • +1

The D90 is not aimed at novice DSLR users that would buy an "entry level Pentax".

      • fair enough, I was referring more to the D5000. cheers.

        • Pentax is quite good! however, considering the variety of lens, canon and nikon have more options.

  • shame there isn't any cash back on my Cannon 7D :(

  • +1

only can be purchased with the authorized dealer list and they all are significantly more expensive than many online stores, even after cash back!

    • Yes but you can do your research and get the big guys to price match. on the other hand, you're supporting local jobs and if ever you need to get warranty claims, it's local.
I bought my D90+18-105 lens for $1550 from Myers. with this cashback, $1350. loved the local warranty and service, being able to hold the camera before I bought it…

      • who did u used for price match at Myer? thanks!!

      • ohhhhh that's a good deal! I paid 1900 for mine and thought I got a good deal but hey this was last year! :)
