Difference in price depending on originating location

My in-laws are coming to Australia shortly, and I was thinking of buying the flights for them from Australia.

If I go to the Singapore Airlines site and get a quote for DAC to SYD return, the price is approx $1900, which seems very expensive to me. When I search SYD to DAC return, the the price is much cheaper at approx $1400. Why would there be a premium if originating from one location over another? The legs are the same, and the flight duration is the same.

  • Supply and demand?
    Capitalism?

  • I see this a lot whenever family visit from Singapore.

    Basically, it's because they can.

Although I've normally seen it the other way - cheaper ex Asia rather than ex Australia.

  • There are some very complicated pricing issues that affect that.

  • Market segmentation.

Same reason soap in a pink container can cost significantly more than soap in a blue container.
