What are you bailing out of?

    How much was bail?

Yes you can. I've taken powerbanks through with my hand luggage multiple times, no issues at Perth or Denpasar airports.

  • don't put it in your checked-in luggage. Otherwise go ahead

If you're going back to gaol, don't try hide it up your bottom, it might hurt, and they will find it.

  • I've taken my 16000mah Xiaomi so it should be fine

    • I have a 16K too, and I always take it in my carry on.

  • Is this a new strategy that the Border Patrol are laughing so hard they don't notice the Boogie Board? lol

  • As others have said you'll be fine. I've gone through Aussie customs a dozen times with a 20000mAh.

  • Before bail I'd say they probably won't allow any items in the cell with you, however following making bail there shouldn't be a problem

  • Wait so are you skipping bail and going to Bali?

  • You can't put in in your checked luggage but you can put in your handcarry.

  • Never had a problem with 10k in hand luggage, customs official has a good look at their monitor as it passes through scanner though.

    • Lucky! You will get in trouble with 10001 and don't declare it.

  • You should be fine,as long as you don't hide anything inside the power bank :)

    See: https://www.casa.gov.au/sites/g/files/net351/f/_assets/main/…

Most power banks are rated in milliamphours (MAh) which is the current available over time. The airlines want to know the watt hours (wh) which is the total energy held in the battery. To convert mAh to Wh you need to factor the voltage which for normal power banks only with USB outlets is 5v.

So the conversion is divide mAh by 1000 to get Ah and divide again by 5 (if the voltage is 5) and that gives you the watt hours.

Unfortunately all airlines have different policies (same applies to postal companies).

If in doubt about anything to get a quick response contact Qantas Dangerous Goods Section [email protected] they are pretty helpful and responsive.

    • The few powerbanks I have looked at have their mAh ratings for the battery inside, not the amount it can provide @5V. This means you would use 3.7V instead of 5V for working out the Wh capacity.

  • Batteries are not allowed in checked-in luggage but are fine in your carry-on luggage or in your pocket.
