Waterford "London" Desktop Bar. >50% off. $9,995 (Was $20,995). David Jones in-Store Only

6480

This BARGAIN was tucked away near the lifts on Level 4 at David Jones, Market Street, Sydney.

A bit of digging on the interwebs suggests this might be the cheapest price in the world at the moment. In the UK, they sell for around GBP10,500 and Stateside for around USD11,000. And this is genuine Aussie stock, so you don't have to fap about with mains power and/or plug conversions (mains power needed for the illuminated crystal side panels).

General product information here: http://www.waterford.com/london-desktop-bar

The Waterford "London" desktop includes:

  • 4 x leather coasters (a nice upgrade from the cardboard ones borrowed from the local RSL)
  • 1 x 33cm square metal drink tray with leather insert (doubles as a lapdesk for your notebook)
  • 1 x London Square Decanter (will easy hold a bottle of Aldi whisky)
  • 1 x London Round Decanter (and this for your Jack Daniels)
  • 2 x London Tumblers/DOFs (perfect for bourbon and Coke)
  • 2 x London Hi-Balls (Milo and milk has never looked classier!)

EDIT - Six (6) units in stock at 1.20pm 20Mar16
EDIT - Three (3) units in stock at 5.45pm 24Mar16

EDIT - Additional photos here http://pursuitist.com/waterford-london-desktop-bar-illuminat…

EDIT - further discount hacks:

HT @sp00ker "Stack with 10% off DJs gift cards via entertainment book. You'll need 2 subscriptions though, since each subscription can only buy 5k worth of cards."

    • They will do it for you. Just take the register receipt to the Customer Services desk and they'll prepare a TRS-compliant tax invoice. Amusingly, it's on the same floor as these Waterford units.

For Alfred? Nah, (whispers)he's an alcoholic :P

    • FREE DELIVERY!!!!! ;-)

BTW, the doors aren't made of marble. Like the leather doors on the model listed here, they are only inlays.

  • +2

Any bargains on Johnny Red label? Brought this but now really cant afford full price scotch

  • +1

Wow, 223 + votes at this time. I hope David Jones have enough stock to satisfy all these OzBargainers :)

  • +4

can't believe the number of likes for this deal, it's a nice item but nothing to go crazy about (or i ignore why)

    • -1

A bargain is a bargain, I guess. I don't see the deal in a pair of sandshoes made for $0.50 being sold at 80% off for $21 either.

      • don't get me wrong, i find it great to see something different. I was just amazed by the amount of votes this attracted

  • Imagine the workers lifting that 20k box onto the display….oh the fragility.

    • The cabinet itself is part of the deal. The crystal glasses, decanters etc would have been added after it was in-situ.

      • Yeah true, but you'd still want to wear gloves handling the actual box!

        • FWIW, it seems pretty sturdy. Not fragile at all.

  • +1

Of the six that were available has anyone actually sold their Yaris to take advantage of this massive bargain? If you were that person can you please let me know what your missus thought of your purchase, sure she was overjoyed with this score of the century, you just saved $10k!

  • +7

Whiskey cabinet for the true OZBer

2 x $3 bottle of Voss (minus water or keep water if you don't drink alcohol) on special = $6
    1 x cardboard box from Bunnings = $Free
    2 x $2 tall tumblers from KMart = $4
    2 x $2 short tumblers from KMart = $4

    Total = $14. Saving of $9,981

    • You have omitted a suitable replacement for the coasters?

      • +1

Coasters are overrated. The table will get replaced eventually anyway. Or if coasters are required:

Buy a $4 placemat and cut round bits out of it.

        • +4

So your savings on this deal are down to only $9,977. Be careful, any more extravagances you might be better off buying the real deal. ;-)

      • nearly finished post it pads

      • Cut the box flaps up

  • +5

i dont have 9 dollars let alone 9995 dollars.

    • +4

Someone here, if they buy one, might let you sniff the packaging for a few dollars?

  • +3

Anyone thought of listing this on eBay Dubai for say 15k? When it sells, head down and pick one up, I dare say if you offered 5 they would take it!

    • Not the most ridiculous thing I've heard. They wouldn't think twice about the $650 shipping charge you'd tack on either.

  • +4

Did someone here legitimately buy one? If so I would love an AMA.

    • GOOD CALL!

    • +5

They're open from 10am tomorrow. May I suggest getting a sleeping bag and camping out the front of the store tonight? Can you imagine how many frantic OzBargainers will be there at opening time to grab a couple for early Christmas gifts?

      • +1

Just get your driver to swing around at 10am while your chef keeps a place for your PA at the front of the line..

        • +2

Now there's some mature problem solving!

      • They open at 9:30 a.m.

How many have been sold? How many at full price?

        • +1

@eug: I don't know; I'm not at work this weekend.

  • +1

so far 268 likes, if all 268 are going to buy 1, OMG…. we are talking about $2.6 million sale……..

    • ….with only six units in Sydney and (at a guess) another six around the rest of Australia, I think that $2.6m sale is looking a little shakey ;-)

      • I doubt David Jones would even bother stocking some in Queensland

    • +1

      how about the 17,000 clicks.

  • +13

Are these BPA free? Thinking of getting a couple for the kids.

Just like to say I'm in Waterford, Ireland.

I haven't had the time to visit Waterford crystal although it's sure on my list to do.

Going past the place and getting the few small glimpses of the inside I can tell you it all looks stunning!!

    • +4

      Any factory sale bargains? 😉

      • All their items are out of my budget!

Waterford crystal has shutdown the factory during the recession, one of the biggest job producing businesses in Ireland now today they still sell crystal but it's more just a tour and show and tell there.

I think it's made in America and maybe other parts of the world now, girlfriend told me all this.. Sad news for the economy now the industrial area is for sale and a big eye sore for Waterford.. ( no one wants it)

  • +1

Oooh yeah! I'm buying all 6 in the morning then putting them straight on Ebay :P

  • (If you can wait till Wed the 23rd) Aldi is offering their 3-Star energy rating/3y warranty 116l Bar fridge at $299 (http://www.lasoo.com.au/offer/refrigerators-0/116l-bar-fridg…) - not a 50% discount but (definitely) more affordable (to most).

  • +8

Such a bargain which cant be refused. Got it home. Mrs didn't like it i refused to return it, and of course she won at the end. This ended up on the street and was gone within 5 mins

    • +1

Tell her I said thanks a lot!

      • +3

I traded my car in at David Jones for this. Both are gone now and she still doesn't care.

        • I got one of these for my wife.

I reckon it was a good trade

    • If it was me, The Mrs. would've ended up on the street.

  • I would probably buy it if i were a billionaire

  • Are the crystals Swarowski?

  • Would hate to be that guy who accidentally knocks them over and breaks them

  • +8

Came for the comments, thank you my fellow Ozbargainer's… not disappointed :).

  • +2

This is getting silly. I think there is merit for OzB to do what Steam does for their reviews - have a button for positive, and a button for funny.

Most of the 300+ votes for this deal really belong to the "this is funny" category rather than "this is a bargain, go buy it!"

  • +2

This is more like a joke to me

    • +2

….oh really? ….you think so, huh?

    • +1

      you'll be okay

  • +4

Don't buy this. Wait for the Waterford "London" Desktop Bar 6S Plus which i hear is about to be released. It has a bigger display and comes in a rose gold colour.

If you camp outside DJs now you should be able to get one on the first day.

  • is this a massive joke, i can't even tell? hahaha! what a sh*t thing to blow 10k on. rich people wasting money on wanky rich 'show off how rich i am' status symbol stuff like this when there is so much poverty and inequality is just f****D.

    • +1

      Anger much?

    • +1

      @yupyup

I feel the same. And the item is hideous looking. Ikea designer could do better.

      • +2

        Ikea have designers?
        News to me

    • +1

Clearly this item will not appeal to everyone but it's a legitimate deal. Value/worth is - like beauty - very much in the eyes of the beholder/buyer.

While I didn't buy one, I would if I had the disposable income to do so. I've easily wasted much more that $10K on TVs, game consoles over the years.

How is it any more or less of a bargain than a pair of $100 shoes, discounted to $20 that only cost $0.50 to manufacture in Bangladesh?

Which is a nice segue into ethics. You speak of poverty but I'm not sure how that's reflected in your preference for cheap consumer electronics purchases? You've jumped on a comments slippery-slope and I'm not going to the bottom of it with you.

      • +1

The fact is luxury goods have an extreme markup on them. They might not be made in a cheap 3rd world factory, but their cost doesn't justify their price.

This is just an example of a Veblen Good

      • +1

i agree that it's a legitimate deal for what it is. what it is though is an example of conspicuous consumption of the highest kind.

i also appreciate the thoughtfulness of posting a product like this that you can't buy, but others might appreciate. i'm just here to say 'consider not buying it, and instead try to divorce yourself from the need to buy extreme luxury goods that are so far from necessity. you can achieve the use value of this item for significantly less - glasses and a cabinet! maybe i'm just betraying my low-social class though hey?

western society is notorious for making us want things we don't really need, of which i myself am guilty to a degree - but a FAR lower degree than anyone who buys this kind of thing!

  • This is perfect glassware for my kids' Cottee's cordials

  • This will go well between my mouse pad and in-tray at work. Cheers OP

  • Hmm. I just have to get one of these, but I have a problem - I don't have a desk to put it on.

  • Phew, problem solved. GT to the rescue http://goo.gl/rMi8KC

    • Did you check the Free column for a Waterford "London" Desktop Bar?

China could manufacture a replica for < $100 I reckon. I'll wait and then not buy as it's ugly as.

    • Inappropriate use of negative vote. Reported per https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:voting guidelines

If the bargain isn't relevant to you or you just don't "get it" please ignore the post and move on.

      • Why do Pos vote and Neg vote have different opposite purpose? I knew this but voted with integrity.

        • You've been here less than a year. Perhaps it was an innocent mistake, but mods and the community have set up these voting guidelines for a reason.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:voting_guidelines

Not seeing value for yourself in an item is not a reason to neg it. Just skip the post and move on. What do you think would happen if everyone started negging every contribution to the site they simply didn't like or understand?

        • @OzDJ_: what do you mean by 'if'….? :P

        • @franco cozzo:

          Hahaha ;-)

        • @OzDJ_:
I guess the sky would fall in.

        • +1

@Bargitrage: Well, you just gave up your integrity.

  • +7

400+ positives for a product that might be 50% off, but let's face facts, was GROSSLY overpriced to begin with & none of us cheap bastards would ever truly consider buying even at 90% off…dafuq???

I'm sorry, but the harsh reality is that this is essentially a joke post that belongs in the forums…

    • -3

      FWIW:

      1. 'Overpriced' is subjective. How much is a lead crystal bar with matching lead crystal glassware normally?

      2. I would consider buying one. Consideration ≠ capacity to do so (unfortunately…even at 50% off)

      3. It's not a joke post.

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

    • +4

I agree, last time I called out someone doing something similar I got neg voted into oblivion. Seems as much as this community loves a good bargain, they also love plus voting rubbish posts as long as there's a bit of 'humour' attached to it. I don't get it, sure, have a laugh but there is no way there is 400+ votes worth of value in here.

Contrary to OzDJ's claims that it isn't a joke post, the language in his/her own post suggests otherwise (like the jokes on each and every line of inclusions).

      • +1

        I don't get it,

        The "humour" part? :)

        • +3

Oh I get that people are trying to be funny, but what I mean is that I don't understand why joke posts get so many plus votes. This community is pretty harsh when it comes to what bargains it considers good or not, yet as soon as someone makes a post for a laugh everyone jumps on the + vote button.

    • That's partly because no one is allowed to NEG vote All have been removed after vvigilant reporting by the OP.
It almost makes me want to NEG vote ozbargain.com.au

  • I thought this site was all about value for money irrespective of the discount. The number of positive votes for which there are only 6 available is baffling.
Even with the Rolls Royce deal I wished that I had the money for it, but this I would not buy it for even $50.
I have looked at the pictures many times now to see if I missed something. Maybe it is just something that is too classy for me to understand.

    • +3

I thought this site was all about value for money irrespective of the discount

FYI - "[OzBargain is about] bringing the best deals and bargains in Australia to consumers"

The number of positive votes for which there are only 6 available is baffling.

I couldn't agree more. I saw the item and was immediately drawn to it (looks stunning IRL). When I saw the discounted ticketed price my heart sunk. Figuring it might be appealing to someone else at that price, I asked a few questions, took a photo and shared it. Also, I'm not sure that "only" as an adverb for an item at this price is appropriate.

I would not buy it for even $50.

Indeed. Just like I would't buy a pair of $100 shoes for $20. Value/worth is an entirely personal thing.

Maybe it is just something that is too classy for me to understand.

Or maybe, just maybe, you're different (like the rest of us). :-)

I think this Monthy Python clip is entirely appropriate for this thread.

  • +1

Bought one, thanks Op! The tap water is so tasty from it. Love it! thinking to buy another set to drink coke, such a good investment. It makes me healthier.

  • Is this the original 'made in Ireland' Waterford?

    • Is this a joke?

      No

      I'm confused

I'm DJ. Pleased to meet you ;-)

  • Oh man i wish i knew about this yesterday! I bought 3 of these on Saturday for $21000 each ;(

    • you paid $5 more than the original price? man thats terrible! feel for you bro

  • Another discount hack, buy a cheap air ticket to Bali or perhaps Wellington and you can save further by GST refunds TRS conjunction with this deal; https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/238457
