No, Ubiquiti makes two versions of each AP, the "US Version" and the "World Version".

If the store is doing the right thing, you should be getting the "World Version" stock.

The US model restricts the channels the wireless is allowed to broadcast on to make it compliant to US law. You don't want this (the US model would work in Australia, but it doesn't allow you to use some wireless channels).

      • They're imported but the Power Supply injector is an Australian plugs.
Not needed if you have a switch that provides power over ethernet.

  • I already have an Asus RT-N56U, which I was planning to upgrade to Asus RT-AC68U. Which one would give me a better speeds for media consumption
(mostly kodi/youtube over chromecast)? I am not worried about range cos my house is relatively small and router is located in the middle of house. Thanks.

    • If you have AC devices in the house, the AC68U, for sure.

      • I have ac68…… mine does 450mbit through floor…… for me it might be a receiving device driver ( Broadcom) issue for the Acer pic nic……… so I have a $240 router that gives me the same " end to end" as my $100 router …..450 mbits.

  • All above is true. Ubiquiti gear is the bomb. Sensational throughput and reliability. I would not put one in your living room unless it directed outside through a window to another unit. Their functionality and specs are way beyond this price point. (Have/do use these things in industry). very good indeed.

    • Actually. We use a different model. More of a point-to-point bridge. This particular model would probably be fine indoors. Their Wireless Bridges are top shelf.

  • So glad reading all these comments, I purchased from Scorptec 24 POE 500 watt switch, 8 port router Pro Edge along with the 300mbps wifi access point for our business. We're moving premises next month.

Will have a play with them tomorrow :)

This is a great deal and I purchased one of these, will use the 300mbps for the workflow instead.

  • the postage is $22 for me

    • Seems to be the NT and WA rate instead of $16 for everywhere else

  • +1

Remember that this is just an access point. you still need a router to be able to share the internets using NAT with others over WIFI or Ethernet.

  • Just to verify this is an AP only & I would still need a router?

ie. So on FTTP setup would still be: [NTD—>Router—>AP]?

Edit: Nvm, supnigs answered it above. Oh well, back to the consumer AIO's…

    • +2

Or, you go NTD -> Build a small server to act as firewall/router/UniFi management system -> AP
Basically any old PC with two NICs will do the job. Have fun.

I've done tons of research and seriously thought about buying 3 of these for my new house(435 square meter), but ended up with 3 x Apple Airport Extreme strictly as AP for the ease of use/setup and better transfer speed.
In saying that, Ubiquiti does have more feature which I don't really need(some features can be done with a router) and is cheaper too.
For the past 3 months with 3 x Airport Extreme + Asus AC68U, I've never had any issue with 15+ devices running in the house.
    http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/10/review-ubiquiti-unifi…

    • If you got the Ubiquiti devices instead, you'd be able to do zero handoff roaming. Single SSID that your devices can connect to and roam against whatever AP is closest automatically. Long as you're happy, that's the main thing, but you had the perfect use case for Unifi! I've installed hundreds of Unifi devices in homes and businesses and found them excellent.

      • Although Apple doesn't market the "zero handoff" feature, I have 1 single SSID in my house, and have consistent speed while walking through out the whole house without dropping. Tried streaming video and wifi speed test apps on android and iOS.

    • I found the ASUS to be bloody useless. Meanwhile my 2 x airport extremes are rock solid and I get consistent speed and performance. I have them hardwired and run 2 separate WiFi networks. Works a treat for my purposes…

  • Instead of heading down the Ubiquiti Unifi route you could instead go down the Cisco route and get a WAP371 for about $260 off Amazon for a much more business like solution.

  • No combine shipping :-(

  • How would these go as a wifi extender for a Netgear X6 R8000 ?

    • No good as a wi-fi extender. They don't support WDS.

  • I've got a asus rt-n16 router. Can I add this to improve wireless performance or does router need to be ac model?

    • +1

You can turn the wi-fi off on the ASUS router and use the wi-fi on the Unifi instead (so you use the ASUS simply as a router - plug the Unifi into the ASUS via an ethernet cable). Whether it'll be better isn't 100% as it depends greatly on the RF environment in your area. Chances are you'll see a big improvement though, as the RT-N16 only supports 2.4GHz 802.11n. With the 802.11ac Unifi, you'll get 802.11ac speeds if your client devices support it.

  • good to see some Ubiquiti gear being listed.

already bought from eBay a month ago though.

    • +1

Can you comment on how it is performing? Although we have got enough backing on this product but another one wouldn't hurt.

      • for 2 years I have had 2 of the very basic ones running, the 2.4GHz only.

bought 2 of the pros (old square ones) to replace them, they have 5Ghz, haven't installed them yet.

they provide good wifi cover, extremely reliable.

though I would like to see better management features in the dash board.

I initially managed usage through the unifi dashboards, but recently I moved to a DD-WRT router for that.

  • +1

hi, please confirm if this model can do mac address filter? thanks

    • Nope, UniFi doesn't allow a MAC address whitelist. You can kick devices off by their MAC address, but not specifically allow access to devices based on their MAC address. Every release people ask for it, but Ubiquiti says: "I'm afraid MAC filtering is unlikely going to be added as it's inherently insecure. If you want per-device filtering, it's much better to implement WPA2 Enterprise with a Radius server, which UniFi does support."

  • really dont need this for over 12 months when the new place is built (plan to have cat6 outlet in the roof so I can run POE to an AP.

is it worth me grabbing 2 of these now? or am I better off waiting till I actually need it (ie: will the price drop this low again/will tech improve massively over 12-15 months)

    • Buy it closer to when you need it, unless you plan on using it now as well. No doubt the price will change in 12 months time as imports are tied to the USD. Might go up, might go down, hah (I'd bet that they go down just due to the product's age - the new AC range of Ubiquiti are still very fresh)

  • If I replace my Netgear runnings WRT with Unifi AC PRO and … a router…
    What router do you recommend?
I am using dnsmasq and openvpn in WRT.
Can't see if EdgeRouters can do this.

    • +1

EdgeRouter runs dnsmasq and OpenVPN. By default the dnsmasq implementation is a little odd - used for DNS forwarding but DHCP is handled by dhcpd by default. Easy enough to change our just live with it (I just live with it).

    • +1

I use one of these. Excellent device. http://www.citytechnology.com.au/store/ubiquiti/ubiquiti-edg…. OpenVPN no problems - a number of tutorials online showing how to configure. Dnsmasq I don't bother using, but it's more than likely it will do what you need it to do. But initially you can keep the netgear - just switch off the AP as it's probably no longer required.

    • +2

I actually recommend the Unifi Security Gateway over the EdgeRouter.

The problem with the EdgeRouter is that it's managed in a completely different controller interface. The Unifi Controller is very nice software, and I prefer my router and AP's in the same management console. The Unifi Security Gateway is exactly the same hardware as the EdgeRouter Lite… just with different firmware (you can't swap the firmware over through). There are a few missing features in the Unifi Security Gateway, but those are minor.

      • Thanks for sharing.

      • Thanks for your comment!!! I almost bought the EdgeRouter to replace my existing Netgear R6300 so that I could admin everything from the one interface (and allow VPN access without installing the DD-WRT firmware).

That said, I will still consider it though as it is substantially cheaper, and if I get a couple of EdgeRouter X 5-Port devices to replace my dodgy 5 port Netgear switches, then I will need to use that interface anyway.

I was planning on running the Unifi controller software from my QNAP.

        • I was planning on running the Unifi controller software from my QNAP.

          Is it possible?

        • +1

@SickDmith: Yes. After lots of trying different packages and install methods, I found this forum that seemed to work:
          http://community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi-Wireless/Unifi-server-hos…

Check the very last post on that page and download 4.8.14 qpkg. It worked for me. Good luck if you try it!

      • +1

I looked into it from what you said but the Unifi security gateway appears to have some drawbacks. More expensive than the Edgerouter, less ports (only LAN port in fact) and no POE support whereas some of the edge routers do. I'm not sure where that product fits in apart from the fact that it uses the Unifi controller.

Personally I would rather sacrifice the fact that it doesn't run Unifi controller and get the hardware features of the Edge router. It's not like you'll be into the admin interface every day.

      • +1

        Unifi Security Gateway looks nice.
But does it run similar software with EdgeRouters?

I am currently using dnsmasq in WRT to resolve some domains with different from default DNS server.

It looks like both dnsmasq and OpenVPN works fine in EdgeRouters.
I wonder if this is still the case for Unifi Security Gateway.

  • $226 here vs $229 at UBWH
    http://ubwh.com.au/product_info.php?products_id=366

Is there any difference other than $3?

    • +1

Yes. See reply to first comment in this post… that price does not include GST.

    • Does UBWH include shipping? Can't be bothered to register just to check it out.

  • Slightly a bit of off-topic, sorry. I try to block my son's PC access by filtering his MAC address, but he seems to be able to change his PC's MAC address to get around the filtering. Can this device offer a solution?

    • change it to MAC addresses accepted instead of blocked.

      • The Unifi Controller doesn't support MAC address whitelisting, only blacklisting.

        • And this little fella can find a legit machine and clone the MAC address, how do I whitelist or block that?!

Technology needs to advance further I am afraid

          :(

        • +2

@eco2: Implement Authentication, or even try talking to your son about his internet usage :)

Set up a separate SSID for your son with a time schedule maybe ?

        • @DJ: By "Authentication" you mean password? You know on Windows you can actually reveal wifi password once connected. They don't have the "*****" they show (shockingly) as plain text!

  • +1

What are people using as their router in combination with this?

    • +1

      Ubiquiti EdgeMAX EdgeRouter Lite ERLite-3

    • +1

I recommend using the Unifi Security Gateway in combination with this. It's all managed in the same Unifi controller software, which is fantastic.
The EdgeRouter Lite is a great option too, but it isn't compatible with the Unifi controller.

      • +1

True, although I am a geek so like the fact you can do CLI (Command Line Interface) stuff with the router - I recall the internals are the same, but the gateway only lets you do stuff via the gui interface. Again, not necessarily a bad thing but for me I preferred the additional flexibility over the gui usability…. ;-)

  • What is the difference between the UAP and lite version?

    • This one (Pro) and the lite version?

Going off what I remember, the Pro has:
      - higher theoretical throughput;
      - standards compliant POE.

    • +1

      3x3 MIMO and 802.af/at PoE.

Unless you have a lot of concurrent clients (or 3x3 clients), 3x3 will make no difference to you. I have the Lite (2x2 MIMO) and get >500Mbps from about 6 metres away, without line of sight.

  • Is there a version of the controller software for Ubuntu /Debian? Or is it windows only?

  • I purchased one of these.
Currently I have a billion modem/router in one part of the house, towards the front hooked up to my ADSL connection.

In another part of the house I have a a netgear r8000 hooked up via power over electricity. So I can get wifi all over the house.

    Works decently but nothing crazy.
Im hoping to hook this up to the billion modem and use it as the access point.

Would I be better off having it on the netgear router as that's more centrally located.

My adsl2 is getting worse. Maybe a recommendation on a better modem/router. Would getting a unifi security gateway and hooking up to the billion improve things.

    TIA

  • +1

    Ordered as well!

Might have finally found a use for my Raspberry Pi to run the controller software. Unless it'll run on my Synology NAS…

Either way, the slower speeds than some consumer gear is a little disappointing but everything else about it is pretty good. I've certainly enjoyed having the EdgeMax Lite do my routing so far. Hopefully I can just stash one of these in the upstairs ceiling and forget about it.

  • Does this pro version support multiple Access Points on a single SSID WITHOUT the need of a WLAN Controller or a separate device?

  • +1

Price $219.00 Delivery: Australia Wide $19 TOTAL: $238.00
    http://www.netplus.com.au/product/NWSWUB-UNIFIAC31/Ubiquiti_…

    • Can someone confirm this is cheaper and of the same spec with posted deal?

      • +1

Stock Availability (Osborne Park/Online Orders): More stock on the way.

It's the same item, there's only one "UAP-AC-PRO" part number.
All you have to do is look at the links ;)

        • I know… but just in case. So with net plus is cheaper?

        • +1

Maths says yes.. but NetPlus is about 15 mins away from my house so there's no postage for me ;)

        • @promethbastard: $219 pickup and you got a ripper of a deal.

        • @superdry:
Netplus also have the Lite for $129 and the LR for $139 .. again, awaiting stock.
I'm keen on that. I should probably build my router soon :D

    • Netplus also has the LITE version for $129.
I'd buy it from MyITHub though, if they could do better (currently $150)!

  • Didn't need one, but got it anyway #storyofozbargain

I'm currently using DrayTek Vigor 120 modem and ASUS RT-AC66U router.

With this can I skip the router?

    • This is an ACCESS POINT only. It needs a router behind it. All this provides is wireless connectivity. A router is needed to handle the IP address requirements and traffic etc.

      • Couldn't my modem do that?

It's been a while since I set it all up.

        • Had a look at your modem. Yes, you could basically remove the Asus router and use the Draytek standalone. The wiring would basically be: Power & phone line to modem, Ethernet cable out of modem into PoE Injector, power to PoE Injector, ethernet cable out of Injector to UniFi AP.
You may need to check the Draytek config as you may have disabled the DHCP functions.

  • It looks like NetPlus now has this for $219 (+$19 shipping to eastern states) :

    http://www.netplus.com.au/product/NWSWUB%2DUNIFIAC31/Ubiquit…

Stock seems limited though and I've never heard of either My IT Hub or Netplus

  • +1

    Hey Store Rep(MyITHub),

Before the offer ends can you can confirm the previous asked questions (yesterday) on what model you sell and what injector?

"Ubiquiti makes two versions of each AP, the "US Version" and the "World Version"

"Is this item a single pack? Or is it a 5-pack that has been separated out? The reason I ask is because the 5-pack product doesn't include the PoE Injector, whereas the single pack does."

    Cheers

    • +4

these are single pack and comes with AU PSU and POE injector. Hope this helps.

      • +2

Cheers on the single pack confirmation but are they the "World Version" without the channel limitations?

  • Hi all - just wondering if this would help in my situation. I have a 802.11n router upstairs, but the signal isn't too strong downstairs because it has to pass through a couple of walls + one bathroom. Would replacing the 802.11n router improve downstairs reception?

  • anyone receive these yet? or know whether they come with an Australian plug on the power injector?

    • Three posts above yours the rep confirms they come with au plug Poe injector.

      • Thankyou for highlighting :)

  • Can anyone confirm my proposed layout will work without frying anything? Only poe device will be this unifi device

    Router - cat6 - poe injector - cat6 - unifi - cat6 - switch.

Router is up one end of the house. Unifi would be in the middle of my existing run to the lounge room where I have my media player and smart TV attached to the switch. Switch runs off regular Power Point.

    • You can't connect the UniFi directly to both the router and the switch. The UniFi has a single port.

  • Just wondering if anyone got shipping notification on there order? Also e-mail sales and didn't hear back!

    • +1

Mine came today….got shipping Friday. Will have a play with it tonight.

  • Hi OP, could you give us a deal for the EdgeRouter Lite?

  • Submitted a new deal on UAP-AC-LR.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/243094

  • Well Mine arrived yesterday and I'm dissappointed that there my Signal strength is no better than what I was getting with my Fritzbox 7390. The management tools are a lot nicer but it's a moot point when you get the same poor coverage. I have a seperate mancave ( brick ) about 8 metres away from the access point which I have adjacent to the ceiling inside the main house and barely get enough signal on my G4 to even browse the net

    • Have you updated the firmware on the device? I haven't used the new ones yet, but having setup many of the old UAPs, the signal strength is insane.. I've had it happily transfer data from the parking garage underneath a client.
