Best Health Insurance for Singles + Family

HI, as Medibank has decided to raise premiums AGAIN, my family has decided to part ways with it.

I am after;
1 SINGLES COVER (no hospital) with decent extras + 1 FAMILY COVER (maybe with hospital cover but mainly focusing on extras as well) for my parents and my younger sibling under 25.

My dentist recommended Bupa and price is WAY cheaper than Medibank but it has crap optical cover and as all my family members are glasses/contacts wearers, I'm a little reluctant (though they did offer to waive waiting periods).

Any recommendations?

    Have you tried the gov-provided comparison tool? http://www.privatehealth.gov.au/dynamic/compare.aspx

    Doesn't take a cut or shove expensive extras on you.

    My only experience is also with Medibank, who I ended up taking to the ombudsman (who found in my favour, surprise). After that I decided I'd just pay out-of-pocket, and canceled.

    • yeah I just tried that! recommended several providers but so far nothing beats Bupa cost effectiveness wise. I've been paying out of pocket for about a year since i turned 25, and i think i'd rather have private insurance :)

  • it depends on what you extras/hospital cover you need. Try Medibank, Ive been with Bupa and found them to be expensive.

    • expensive when claiming? because the monthly premium cost for Bupa for similar cover as medibank is around $100 cheaper :/

  • expensive when claiming? $100 cheaper per year, per month? If you want cover for dental then Bupa may be the way to go.

    If you want cover for things like massage, optical and IVF/obstetrics then Medibank are cheaper and pay out more for those items.

    • $100 cheaper per month, but I get 85% claim rate from Medibank whereas Bupa is "from" 60%. Might as well stay with Medibank. But then again, Bupa does have higher maximum values for other extras like natural remedies, etc. for same premium.

      • Bupa might have higher maximum values but for natural remedies but they only pay out $20-$25 per claim.

  • Look into Peoplecare. If you join and are referred by someone then we each get $100 each. I have been with them for about 6 years and quite happy with them. Claims process is fast as well. Hope it helps.
