Cracked my Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Fix screen or buy a new phone?

Hi,

As mentioned in the subject heading, after a long 3-4 years in my hands, I have managed to drop my trusty Note 2. Its cracked but still works so I am just wondering if I should get it fixed or purchase a rather basic smart phone.

I am a student with limited $$$.

Any advice will be appreciated!

  • Buy a new phone.

A second hand Note 2 in immaculate condition + new battery would cost a lot less than repair.

  • DIY repair - buy parts on ebay and watch a few youtube videos.

Not sure how the cost compares to buying a 2nd hand one.

  • I am still using a Note 2 myself but it's been lagging nowadays (even after flashing to the more memory-efficient Marshmallow/Cyanogenmod 13).

If my screen cracked, I personally wouldn't bother repairing the dinosaur (or even getting an identical replacement). I'd jump on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2, Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 (or Pro) or even a BNIB Galaxy Note 4. They can be had around the $200-350 mark. My fiance's Redmi Note 2 easily outspeeds my GN2.

  • Get 2nd hand note 3 you will feel the difference. Big.

  • Still going strong with my note 2.

I have not been in the cm world for a long time due to the fact that when I looked at cm I noticed they had issues with the stylus.

Is the stylus working as it should with the stock ROM?

    • The stylus works fine with my Note 2 CM13. Perhaps the issue relates to earlier CM releases?

      • Possibly. I think it was all the functions that were missing due to driver issues or lack there of in CM.

      • so what custom build are you using and does all the features work?

        • I'm using Cyanogenmod 13 (google n7100 cm13).

The features I use regularly work just fine (Bluetooth, Wifi, Video/Netflix, Casts, Stylus, etc.). The only bits I am aware of from experience is the rotation feature sometimes works, sometimes does not (which is fine for me as I tent to stick to Portrait). Everything else trumps the official KitKat release, from battery life, lack of bloatware, memory efficiency and ultimately responsiveness.

  • I changed from my note 2 recently.

I dropped it for the 100th time and it finally cracked the screen.

The screen wasn't the big issue though, battery life was.

It looks like Samsung pulled all batteries within 2years of releasing it.

All so called originals replacements I bought after a year and a half (bought it half year after released) were duds, that died after 50% and eventually "expanded" after a few uses.

Otherwise I'd keep the note 2 still, good phone.

Its a premium phone, so you'll find any cheap replacement not much better - except battery life

    • +1

I bought a couple of original (Samsung brand) batteries for my Note 2 and they have been working great. far longer lasting than generic brands that advertise themselves as high capacity but, in my experience, lose that capacity in just months.

      • You can't really muck around with cheap batteries.

I have a zerolemon and get insane battery life but and over 300 grams it's a yeh.

I use the original battery now as I have more access to outlets but it still has decent life in it.

  • I watched the repair video, looked like way too much fluffing around. Got mine fixed off some guy on Gumtree for $70. Broke it again a year later this time the internal screen as well so bought note 4 instead.

  • Just compare the respective costs. If you don't tell us the cost of the screen repair then we don't have enough information on which to base any sensible advice.

  • We cant decide for you. Just get a quote and if you think its reasonable, then fix it. Otherwise if it still works keep using it as is. Common sense. Now stop wasting everyone's time and go and work it out for yourself little boy. Time to grow up.

  • Everywhere else I checked for repair was $250 -$300 even the cheaper places….which was a big NO!!

    • With that kind of money, I'd rather upgrade to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro and retire the old GN2.

  • I just use mine with a cracked screen. Still works. Replacement screen is about $130-150 for the part alone from aliexpress. If you do go down this route get a screen with frame as the amoled screen itself is difficult to align to the frame by naked eye. This is why 3rd party repairs are so expnseive, the parts aren't cheap or common as ips lcd screens used in iPhones.. It's cheaper to buy a used note 2 with screen intact.
