Lawn Mower

I'm looking for a lawn mower, and I don't know much about them. Land is around 486sqm, and only gravel along both left and right sides of the house. I already bought a Ryobi electric trimmer to do edges, etc. I don't think 20m long extension lead will do for mower, so (unfortunately) I think I may have to look at petrol mower.

I found Masport 470 2 in 1 catch or mulch mower at Bunnings. $439. Seems expensive for a mower. Anywhere that has better prices than bunnings? Would you recommend used mower from gumtree? What to look out for when buying 2nd hand mower?

I bought the equivalent model Masport 470 from a few years back from Bunnings for a similar price ($449 on special) and honestly, wasn't that impressed. Unknown to me at that time, it is quite cheap and had a low range Briggs and Stratton engine in it which was still powerful enough but did struggle a bit if my Sir Walter lawn was overgrown.

The mulching feature works well and is a nice inclusion as you don't need to use a catcher.

The chassis/deck itself is ok but very soon after, the "suspension" had issues and came apart. What I am referring to is the metal bar/spring that linked the front and rear wheel had somehow popped off from where it connects to the brace on the rear wheel and I can't pop it back on.

My dad needed a new mower a year or so later and I bought him a massive 21" self propelled mower with the 190cc top of the line Briggs and Stratton engine for $380 including freight from an EBAY seller. This thing smashes my Masport and my Dad ended up giving it to me when he moved so I now use this.

I've looked at Ebay now and there are still some great deals going - just stick with the Briggs and Stratton engines, don't go for the knockoff Honda OHV designs.

One tip, if you can - get a plastic catcher. Fabric is ok but it may break. If it does, a replacement bag can be purchased cheap enough from a mower shop. Just keep your metal frame.
