  • I want this, but with (much) higher specs.

They did not reply to my emails back when I looked at it, made me wonder if they cant reply when im buying if it breaks who do I count on…

if they can't be ar$ed to reply to emails before you hand over your money, there's no chance of them doing it when you need help.

  • How is this anything like a Raspberry Pi?
    It's a handheld crappy 80's 8bit gaming toy.
you'd be better off getting a SNES for your phone.

    • It's a 1GHz ARMv7 mini computer so it's a bit like a Raspberry Pi, except you get a screen, battery, keyboard, wifi and bluetooth.

I'm a gadget geek and a tinkerer, this actually looks really interesting.

      • I agree it's interesting if you want to play, modify & create 8 bit games, but it's nothing like a raspberry pi.

The $9 Chip computer they're flogging, that is much more like a Rapberry Pi & certainly is very interesting and looks like competition for basic adreno boards

It includes the CHIP computer and it's more like a Raspberry Pi Zero than an Arduino.

Arduino is an AVR microcontroller. CHIP and Raspberry Pi are "System on a Chip" (SOAC)

        • +1

@skegger: Arduino has been alot more than just AVR for quite some time and does include both ARM and MIPS chips these days - you could say "chip" (which I believe is more interesting than the original post) is similar to a arduino yun, due or indeed an RPi…

ps. SoC is system on a chip

  • About $88 AUD delivered.

I don't really get the appeal of this thing.
It's like a Gameboy Color with homebrew games but no licensed games.
I think the appeal is supposed to be because it's uncool but also new in a way.

    • +3

No the appeal is that it's completely open source hardware and open source software. It's tinkerer and developer-friendly.

It's a cheaper alternative to a Rasp Pi and this deal specifically includes all the custom components required to make it a portable device.

If you buy a rasp pi you won't get anything else except for the mainboard and the SOC, everything else you must buy elsewhere and construct it yourself. And a portable handheld enclosure you might even have to pay a lot for, or have to print with a 3D printer yourself.

    • It's probably running Linux so I'd bet there are some GB emulators that would run on it. It is on the expensive side but if you're building a handheld emulator / retro gaming system, by the time you factor in microcomputer, screen, battery, battery voltage converter, controller interface etc. it adds up. Look up Pi Grrl or Gameboy Nano. There is a pretty big community for homebrew emulator consoles.

Worth getting a couple of CHIPS https://www.getchip.com/pages/chip if you are paying for the shipping.
