Apple Prices Have Gone up a Lot

Hey guys,

Was looking at a Macbook Air for my wife and notice that the same 13 inch Macbook Air bought for $1199 in January last year is now going for $1549.

That's nearly a 30% increase in 18 months. Even with currency fluctuations taken into account that just seems a bit much don't you agree?

        • They do not want to spend many hours reading and working like a systems administrator in order to carry out tasks that are done in 5 seconds in OSX or Windows.

It's comments like these that sully reputations without cause or reason. Even if you are exaggerating …

Also there are no problems I'm aware of rendering video in Linux. Talking both encode and decode. I would suggest a different OS for Video Editing, however.

    • How is the integration between Linux OS with iphone and apple watch? Do we get similar apps that we get from app store?

    • Cool. What distro? Have you tried elementary?

  • +1

Yep a happy linux (mint) user myself.
Cheap laptop has a new lease of life, OS works a treat and costs $0 and to the apple fanboi above, this is a laptop that I have had since 2010 so I guess that puts your anything but apple is garbage claim where it belongs.

Apple anyways gives an international warranty irrespective of where you buy. Get one from asian countries or USA through friends or someone else

    • Other manufacturers also offer a global warranty. You probably mean apple repair/replacement is more stream line if you live in a major city with an apple store?

Sony, Microsoft, dell have pretty bullet proof international warranties too.

      • Sony … bullet proof international warranties

        Bahahahaha. No seriously, stop.

I don't know about laptops, but once upon a time I got a faulty Xperia Z bought from the UK. It was a nasty experience.

In context with ops post laptops yes. Bought a vaio at sony style oz, got fixed at sony Singapore, not a problem.

Phones no, have to deal with fonebiz who suck dogs balls.

So you're complaining about a 29.19% price increase over a period where the AUD dropped roughly 29.5%??? Hilarious. Surprised they haven't increased prices further to take into account future currency risk.

    • someone above said US/AUD was .78 a year back, now its .73 , pretty similar.

      • +2

Operational Hedging seems a likely answer.

      • That particular MBA OP is talking about was released in May 2014 when the price was set. AUD was 0.93. Apple didnt re-price the product in January when OP purchased it. So with the fluctuations, its about there.

  • I have a midspec 256GB 2013 rMBP for around $1300 at a Dick Smith (RIP), now it's $2.2k. Even with Force Touch and spec bumps, oof.

I wish my trouser snake increased a certain percentage each year

However I don't want it to get thinner and thinner like the latest laptops

  • Maybe google should start selling there own laptops.

Google don't have an OS to compete with windows, linux and apple.

And they do the chrome I believe.

    What you guys on about?
Apples are always around $2.99 per kilo

oh the irony, Apple should do a rebranding to 'mango'

    • +7

You cant compare Apples to Apples

    • +3

Depends. Fuji always seem to command a premium, say around $5 a kilo - Pink Lady, not so much.

  • Buy an Android.

    Why not Surface Pro 4?

"Buy it or don't buy it"
I am sure there's another brand other than Apple…

  • Man! Apple products are like commodities now! Buy now wait for the rates to change then sell accordingly.

    • I felt the same way. Forget property. MacBooks are the new investment.

APPLE PRICES ARE VERY CHEAP AT HARCOURT VICTORIA

Almost 2 years ago I bought a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) for ~$2300

    -2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
    -16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    -256GB SSD

It's now 2016 and here are the specs for the base 15" macbook pro:

    2.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
    16GB 1600MHz memory
    256GB PCIe-based flash storage

    Price: $3,099.00

Even for a work machine, the price is now so excessive that I wouldn't consider one of these machines again.

    • Sounds like you got a good investment.. maybe even better than property!

  • Beauty and Power has a price…

You can tell who is downvoting who in regards to apple fanboys vs android fanboys.
    Its actually hilarious.

'Take this downvote, my device is better than yours!' - ahh i feel so much better now

    • B-bu-but, I thought negs were a tool that we use to remove invalid negs on deals?

  • Apple will always charge whatever they want, they could charge $5000 and people would line up. Once people are trained to think their products are good, there no convincing them that they are getting ripped off.

    • I have iphone but got samsung tablet, what does that mean?
      Illuminati !

  • I am on my Macbook Air 2013 & have decided I won't buy my next Apple laptop or iPad until Apple merges iPad & Macbook and come up with something like Surface Pro from Microsoft. If they never do my money will go to Microsoft. Macbook & iPad can be combined but Apple still wants to charge for 2 seperate devices & make more money. Also still on my iPhone 5S & wont upgrade until I see some meaningful upgrade (subjective I know). won't upgrade just for a bigger screen. Good luck with your purchase.

    • So something like the iPad Pro?

      • something on which I can use OSX, a tablet with a laptops full functionality, just like Surface Pro. Surface Pro can replace a laptop iPad Pro can't

        • Each to their own.. but as an owner of an XPS 12.. Using a desktop OS with a touchscreen device is actually pretty horrible. I'm yet to see anyone pul off a combined desktop / touch OS that isn't shite at both. Here's hoping!

    • +2

Visit the forums and see what kinds of problems people are having with their Surface Books. They still have not been able to resolve all. I would never buy a half baked product which attempts to do 1000 things but gets none of them right.

If you don't think about seamless integration with iphone/apple watch and don't care about app store, you might want to get Elementary OS. Looks very sleek and clean Linux OS:

  • Mentioned in a couple of posts but not emphasised is the fact that Apple product depreciate much less than other comparable brands.

Personally I find the reliability of the hardware is excellent and on the operation side, I have never had a virus, not the case I had with Windows products.

But the bug thing for me is resale value. I recently sold a mid-2012 Mac Book Air 128Gb for $800. I only paid $1200 for it and got $120 GST back when I took it out of the country with in 30 days. Thats unbelievable for a computer product. But because the cost of new units has gone up a lot in the period between 2012 (largely due to exchange rate), my price depreciation was exceptionally low. I bought a new one and got the GST back on that too. Therefore my ownership cost of a MBA over a long period tends to be <$250/year. A no-brainer for me!

  • How come macbooks dont have touchscreens?

    • +1

Because when they do, they will revolutionise the field by brining in something that no one has ever done before, having a touch screen.

In all seriousness, I think Tim Cook has mentioned how he do not like the idea of hybrids.

To quote him, "You can converge a toaster and a refrigerator, but those things are probably not gonna be pleasing to the user" or "It's trying to be a tablet and a notebook and it really succeeds at being neither. It's sort of [diluted]" (from http://www.theverge.com/2015/11/11/9712184/apple-tim-cook-mi…)

      • I'm sure 30 years ago someone thought a Camera in a Phone would be diluted too and succeed at being neither.

        • As he's the CEO, I assume that's the Apple's take on hybrids.

In some sense, using Surface Pro 3, I kind of see where he is coming from (hybrids are worse than a proper laptop or a proper tablet as a laptop or a tablet). That said, I kinda see that being more of a problem for OS makers/device makers to solve, not something unsolvable.

    • I would love it if my MacBook Air screen would detach and become an 13" iPad. Whatever the Microsoft Surface Pro offers I have a pile of expired laptops in the cupboard to remind me I'm not interested in returning to a virus filled Windows world.

No matter how much they protest, Apple will have to create hybrids or they will get left behind. But of course they want to hold on to the current double/triple dipping for as long as possible.

      • I haven't had a virus infection since 2009-ish, after XP and the days of zero day drive by exploits finally died out. Modern malware are all based on social engineering (read: getting dumb people to run this-is-obviously-a-porn-file-duh.mp4.exe), in which OSX is equally susceptible (Mabouia proof of concept ransomware)

    • I don't know if you've tried a hybrid before, but they really aren't all that spectacular. I like my XPS 12 as a laptop, but using the touchscreen on a desktop OS is not a pleasant experience. If I had of known what I know now, I would have gone with a straight laptop.

  • Buy the atom powered chrome book for $238, I mean it's got the same respectability factor as an apple, and then use the other $1250 for cocaine !

  • +1

We should give APPLE a lesson. Stop buying from them and see where they can go or do about it.

  • Your maths sucks. $AUD has dropped from near US$1 to just 72c. Add to that increases in wages, freight costs etc. Man prices cannot stay static for 6 mths let alone 2 years. Even TV prices have shot up enormously over that time. Your are on another planet!

  • In 18 months probably already different year version. Each year Apple release new macbook air. Although they look similar specs but they are more advanced. Newest macbook air support 4k output. You can buy older version with cheaper price.

  • +1

Nearly ready to convert to Apple. I was a Microsoft fanboi until Windows Vista. Then I wavered. Windows 7 was good, but didn't excite me. Then Windows 8 disgusted me. Surprisingly, Windows 8.1 with Classic Shell is great (although I can't get the trackpad to stop bringing up Charms). But they really lost me with Windows 10. MS is simply no longer aiming to create the best possible desktop operating system. Instead, they are aiming to make an OS that works on multiple kinds of hardware. So it's clunky and unreliable, in my experience. And I can't find a good Windows 15" laptop even at a premium price.

So I've been pushed to look for alternatives. But Apple's hardware is extremely restricted - much worse than just a few years ago. Thin bits of nothing with no connectivity and obvious cost cutting compromises. For word processing or number crunching, the laptop keyboards are bad - power button incorporated into the keyboard, no page up/down, no home/end, and no numpad. If Apple made a business 15" laptop - just one model at a higher price with no compromises - then I would get it.

Previously, I assumed that computers and operating systems would continually improve forever. Now that dream is over.

    • And I can't find a good Windows 15" laptop even at a premium price.

      You're kidding, right.

Lenovo P series, Metabox, Alienware 15, HP Spectre 15, HP Elitebook 15, HP Zbook.

All are pretty indestructible, far more powerful than anything Apple offers and the business machines are built better than any macbook.

      • Thanks for the suggestions. But…

Lenovo P series: bad keyboard layout, old-fashioned mouse button in the keyboard, buttons all over the trackpad.

Metabox: low battery life, merged arrow key into the zero key making numeric data entry awkward.

Alienware: bulky, ridiculous looking, bad keyboard layout.

HP Spectre: no numpad, function keys have tiny writing so you need a magnifying glass unless your eyesight is perfect.

HP Elitebook: no numpad, old-fashioned mouse button in the keyboard, buttons all over the trackpad.

HP Zbook: bulky, ugly, old-fashioned mouse button in the keyboard, buttons all over the trackpad.

The above might seem fussy, but it's not unreasonable to have a premium laptop with a nice screen and keyboard. Dell Inspirons have great keyboard layouts, but no FHD except for the $1899 one which isn't worth it even at $1100. The best so far is the Dell XPS. Although it lacks a numpad, the screen is so nice that it would be worth the sacrifice. But they were too stingy with the keyboard - narrow key travel and merging page up/down and home/end into the arrow keys. Also, there are lots of complaints on the net about its reliability.

        • +1

          but it's not unreasonable

Are you secretly a woman? Yes, you are unreasonable.

        • @cDNA:

Anyone who is looking for a premium laptop and wants the toy mouse (look ma, my fancy trackpad can zoom like my iPhone) instead of the old-fashioned mouse button in the keyboard nipple shouldn't have their opinion seriously considered. And since when did the Macbook Pro had a numpad?

  • Apple products are status items, unlike Android phones and tablets, which are for proletariat trash like me. Middle class people are so (irrationally) obsessed with status that they would gladly pay 10 times as much for a similarly specced Apple product than an Android. They definitely have more dollars than sense.

People shouldn't complain - you have virtually no interest now to pay on your McMansions and your rental properties, so you can can afford to spend far more on luxury goods like gold Apfel watches.

  • Australians love sending money over to the US and to overseas markets. We are a resource rich country that has no plans of changing our ways.

  • This is simply a 'what the market will bear' issue. Love it or hate it Apple has very loyal fans who literally line up outside their stores to buy their products before they launch, Apple would be foolish not to push their pricing as high as they can to create as much profit as possible.
