Do I Need to be Licenced for Electrical Work?

As a business idea I'd like to offer services repairing certain devices that are powered by mains power. The service is 99% non-electrical work. The devices have minimal 240v circuits, but to service the item, you do need to often connect/rewire 240v within the device.

I assume I need some sort of accreditation for this type of work? Can anyone tell me how difficult this accreditation would be to obtain? Given it is not the main area of service, would a better approach be to do the service and then have an electrician sign off on it once complete?

Thanks.

  • Hi,

You could be thinking of the Self Employed part of:
    http://www.esv.vic.gov.au/Electricity-Professionals/Licensin…
but you would need to check if that would be sufficient or enough.

    • Ill have a look, thanks.

    • Sounds like quite a process to go through before being in a position to be able to find out if the business idea is any good.

    THIS!!

If you handle the business side of the business (chatting to clients and some disassembly / reassembly) and the electrician handles the actual electrical part then you should be ok.

As an electrician I would not sign off anyone's work unless I go over it myself so in other words i t would be easier for them to do the work.
