Reporting unlawful college and tax fraud

Dear ozbargaing family,

1) Where can I report a person going to an unlawful college to gain citizen?

2) Where can I report someone hiding there tax and doing cash only jobs?

Thanks bargainser,

I'm not going to pry for personal details, but the national immigration dob-in line is 1800 009 623

and if you have any concerns about tax dodging and evasion you can contact the Australian Tax office on 1800 060 062

but I wouldn't waste their time or yours because they probably won't be interested in small cases of individuals due to lack of evidence. If it's a business then yes, there might be more grounds for an investigation.

Thanks scrimshaw, again your first one to save the miserable week i'm having. I think you have a inkling ;)

        sending you good vibes bro

    • Trust me they are interested. Didn't u watch border security Oz TV show? They get tips from public all the time

      • I don't think it would do well for border patrol to be on TV and show disregard for their jobs. I think most workplaces, especially public funded ones, would be pretty on the ball when they have a TV crew in their face.

    • +23

Yeah, I'm all good. Thanks for the advice @GameChanger

Where can I send you a dictionary?

It is "their tax" NOT "there tax"

    • +37

      PM me a dictionary thanks.

    • +10

I'd suggest using a full stop at the end of your sentence.

    • +11

If it's a work-related expense, that dictionary could be tax deductible.

    • +1

You should use single quotes, not double quotes.

      • Need my variables in there though

  • +18

I hope this isn't your way of getting back at the Landlord…

    • Lol nice detective work… seriously.

      • +3

I do believe it is for his landlord instead of college.

If it was his college than he would be under the same situation

      • we are both working and studying full time

        People in glass houses…

  • +12

what did the 'tax dodger' do to you - is this motivated by spite and retribution?

    • +1

Ah typical "stick your head in the sand until something affects you directly" attitude.

By your logic, you wouldn't dob in someone for attacking a lady at a train station, unless they attacked you too.

No wonder society is going down the drain.

      • +4

big extrapolation there buddy…by your logic you'd dob in a jay walker?

bet the local police station loves you lol!

      • +5

It's not about "sticking your head in the sand".

If OP was dobbing the person in at the first instance that he became aware of it, then it'd be a case of… lets call it "doing the right thing"… by the rest of the community.

But in this case, the OP is looking to dob this person in as revenge for something that the other person has done to him. So really, this is all for selfish reasons only.

    • CLEARLY motivated by spite and retribution.

We haven't heard the full story and he's probably just as guilty as the other party.

      • hope you're not a juror if I ever have to face trial lol :)

  • +3

    1) Where can I report a person going to an unlawful college to gain citizen?

Jail time and deportation. I feel sorry for you ex.

  • +7

Is it really going to make you feel better after dobbing them in?

You probably won't even get to hear about the result of your actions to be able to satisfy your spite and retribution - so what's the point?

    Live and let live…

  • One word:

    KARMA

    • one word:

      "Katijah"

  • +2

Same as the above. And until unless you can provide very specific evidence of fraud , nothing will come out of it but if its soothes your mind, so be it.

person going to an unlawful college to gain citizen

I am not aware of any government regulation that gives you Australian Citizenship based on any college you attend. Additionally if the college becomes illegal (not registered for whatever reason) then the immigration department will ensure you will get admitted in a registered college and will not penalize you in any way.

Where can I report someone hiding there tax and doing cash only jobs

The whole nature of cash only jobs means there is very little paper trail for you to forward your complain, and until and unless it is of a significant amount, I don't believe ATO is going to dedicate significant resources to tackle it.

I don't know what you aim to achieve with this but best of luck for that

    • Small amount or big, cash only jobs are wrong on part of employers as well as employees. Whether ATO will dedicate resources or not is a separate question but it shouldn't stop people from reporting something which isn't right.

      • +4

Totally disagree with you. Do you feel that the ATO and the government have your best interest at heart? I don't. I see that big business get's all the exemptions, cut's, incentives etc. and it's the basic wage earners who are paying a disproportionately high amount of their small income in the name of living within our means and tightening the belt - BS!

The more that communities come together and support each other the better. Local farmers, supporting the little guy, the local worker, the small business, markets, cash work, it's all part of giving Australians what I see as the "fair go" that our government has eroded away.

There's no such thing as big cash jobs, so really what you're saying is that if someone is making ends meet and supplementing themselves by doing cash work then they should be penalised.

Seems like a rather uncompassionate point of view in my opinion.

        • Your thinking is so one-sided. Isn't it wrong from the employer's side that it can pay employees cash (whatever the amount be) and still gets away without showing that amount anywhere in the system? Do you encourage that?

Also, on employee's side, why does he have to work for half the wages in cash if he's a legal employee? I strongly believe that 'paying in cash' allows a lot of people to break some employment rules (such as minimum hours per week rule for international students) and no one gets to even know about it since every transaction is in cash.

I am not event referring to Centrelink fraud which cash jobs allow yet.

      • Most cash in hand jobs are cash in hand because the employees get paid like 50% of minimum wage, theres a reasonable chance hes under the tax free threshold anyway, what are they gonna do, make him pay the 0 dollars that he owes?

Its far more likely to be centrelink fraud if he happens to be on a payment and isn't reporting the income. Even then, centrelink is generally quite nice about their debts from what i hear (offering interest free payment plans and the like).

Long story short, he's likely not in as much trouble as people seem to think he is.

  • Did some one rip you of with pay? very common for tradies! I see a lot of people on this website that don't seem to see what really happens in the world.

    • +4

Yes big time, also harassment of my family members

      • +1

sorry to hear mate i have had that happen to my mechanic mate and it turned into a fight between us and them and yea some bad stuff happen. when they play dirty you need to play dirty back!
        Its the sad truth.

  • +3

    its your landlord is't it.

there is also an email address on the website

  • +21

I cannot believe the advice people telling OP that he's wasting his time reporting illegal tax evasion. If everyone was like that, all Australia will be rorted by them dodgers. You and I the honest taxpayer are footing the bill, does this not bother you or are you one of them? I bet there are many 'cash only' tradies on this site. Let me tell you I've been burnt by them before, they ask for cash and give you a supposed 10% discount - no receipt, then when something happened and you needed their service, they didn't return your calls because they did not issue you a warranty docket - there is nothing to show for the job done. I bit the bullet and decided never to pay cash again - my mistake too, trying to save a false 10% GST discount. Shouldn't a responsible citizen report these dodgy people?

    • -5

because alot of people on here have probably done the same thing. ozbargainers don't have a problem pouncing on a pricing error and feel aggrieved if such orders are not honored. they also know that nothing is usually done about it and its a waste of time reporting it.

      • +1

That's exactly the poor attitude momov3 is talking about

    • +4

One of my family members works in the ATO, and she says ATO just doesn't have the manpower or time or resources to go hounding down every single individual. The returns are not high enough and it's not worth the effort or salary paid to a tax officer.

You can use this online reporting tool to report tax cheaters
      https://olt.ato.gov.au/terc/default.asp?sid=15122020051803

I have done so on various individuals (not businesses) but so far none of my requests have actually been answered.

I'm sure they will place higher priorities on businesses but if the amount of tax they owe is considered trivial, well, they probably won't even take action.

    • -1

Big business are ripping off the tax payer more than the odd tradesman.

      Unfortunately reporting them does nothing.

Even the $200 million man Turnbull had connections to tax havens such as the Cayman Islands.

      • +2

Even the $200 million man Turnbull had connections to tax havens such as the Cayman Islands.

what do you mean with "connections"? did he commit any offences by having these "connections"?

        • +2

he was named on some papers that have been leaked from the mossack fonseca/panama papers debacle.

The pertinent details I do not know, but I can find out

        • @jenkemjunkie: Yep I heard some information about that, he was just a director of a company that had their money there- if I recall correctly.

    • +1

I've never met a tradesperson like that. In my experience they are actually good, send an invoice, and I can pay it later at my leisure (which is actually always the same day because I feel it's fair).

As for the 10% discount just remember that a tradesperson will not necessarily be paying GST, it's only if they earn above a fairly high threshold.

My primary concern with dodgy businesses are those that regularly pay their workers in cash - only because those workers are often also paid under minimum wage and not properly insured. But… these aren't really tax issues.

I support what you're saying but I can't make all the connections you do.

  • +1

my mum earns 70k a year cash in hand no tax paid. she also lives off centrelink unemployment benefits which is about $30k a year….. Best Thing EVER~!!!!!! SHHH dont report my mum pls

    • You know your metadata can be used to track you down, I suggest you delete your comment if your serious

      • +5

        Candy Man love your posts!

Centrelink is a Govt agency, they're so incompetent that they would never bother following up a random post on the internet even if it gave a detailed guide to rort the system.

        • +2

Tax office is more of a concern. Don't mess with them. It wont be pretty. That's a significant tax loss over a period of years and individuals do get targeted.

        • +3

@CandyMan: Indeed! Though from what I heard from people I know that work in the ATO is that cash in hand individuals are not targeted that often. The reasoning was that they calculated the costs to investigate and generally they don't recover enough back.

I think the post is bit of a lie, $70k is very high amount to be paid in cash, would be very hard for employers to hide traces of it.

    • Well, if that's true I hope she gets what's coming for her. Would rather pay her jail costs than her meth habit

      • +4

Yeah because mums earning cash in hand is ruining the economy. Some time chasing the companies that take from the public purse but never put back, now thats worth my tax dollars to chase down.

        • +1

Your tax dollars, cause it's definitely not hers that this country will be able to use.

        • @sintro: I understand where you're coming from, and that I was probably a bit harsh - but where do you think this country's public services come from? Sure, the system should be improved, and there's some big players unfairly getting away with it. But if someone feels so strongly about it, start a petition or a movement - rather than look at ways to dodge tax themselves.

        • @stingostingo: Yes, it's about stepping back and taking a look at the actions we are taking that are actually Immoral/Wrong by Nature. Then start to contemplate and understand the situation we are in so we can use our imagination to come up with solutions that move away from this system where Inherent Natural Rights are Violated.

It may seem impossible now but we need to take it into consideration, at the very least understand it in our minds otherewise No Change can be manifested.

Basically - Know Your Natural Rights.

I wouldn't waste my time to report any individuals or businesses if ATO doesn't award me up to 30% of additional tax, penalty and other amounts it collects like they do in the US.

    • I think I might move to the US and take up tax-snitching.

  • Yes, I'm sure the ATO is really going to give a rats @$$ about this.

Seriously though, if you really feel the need to dish out some payback, then at least have the decency to do your own research.. It's not that difficult to find what you need by searching the web.

A genuine question (and I'm not begrudging them in this case as an "interesting" conversation came out of it), but why do so many people ask questions on places like this when they could have typed the exact same thing directly into Google and gotten an answer instantly? Do they really not know how Google works?

    • Indeed. I'm guessing, Why do the hard work when you know there's plenty of people on forums who love to do the work for you.

    • Because they're guaranteed mostly ill informed ignorant advice by posing their 'bargain' unrelated question on the wrong forum. People aren't looking for a quick and simple solution. They love overcomplicating by looking for the longest path between two points. Also let's not forget, people love to dish out advice on shit they know very little about. Welcome to the interwebz.

      • I'd be the last person to support people, but one person's "people love to dish out advice on shit they know very little about" is another person's "I'm trying to help a fellow human being."

        • Often no advice is better than incorrect advice as well intentioned as it may be. Some of the stuff I see on here that is just plain false is staggering. Sure the internet is full of false information but one can easily increase their chances by asking the right question on the right forum.

    • If you google, you get all the random results and you have to sort out what is relevant and worthwhile.

By posting in a forum, there will often be discussions, people talking about their personal experiences, etc.

So, in this example, googling might have brought up the ATO site scrimshaw mentioned, but then you might not get the benefit of knowing his experience using it (i.e. nothing happened).

      • also its about the community you most trust. If he gets his info from here about other things chances are he will ask here as well. Reading from random forums feels dirty, like you dont know these people, what do they like, etc.

    • Community. Life is becoming devoid of meaning and we get what little social contact we can even if it's with contrived friendships.
