murdoch propaganda but still a deal!

    It really isn't.

Funny though they're giving them away for free here, as well as another deal where they were free in some Perth car parks. Uncle Rupert getting a bit desperate?

    • Free? it's half price.

      • +1

Yeah, I know, the original title was a bit messed up, and I made my comment and couldn't be bothered updating it. Either way, seems a desperate move (funnily enough right around election time..)

  • +6

Can we have "newspapers" in quotes in the title to show the questionable nature?

    • Fairfax and Guardian aren't any less questionable.

      • +5

I don't disagree. Especially the Fairfax web sites that now look like a blog of entertainment news, and the "Brand Discovery" section I am so excited to get access to.
The ABC is still holding it together journalistically.

        • -1

Fairfax's IT and local news section are relatively good but that ends there.

The far-left bias on 'current events' articles by Fairfax writers are obvious. Many articles are opinion pieces being disguised as news.
Surprise surprise, professional victims (ehem, feminists) have a permanent home there.

        • +2

@payton: Fairfax is far left? You'd have to be pretty far right to think that, and from the language in your comment i'm guessing you're fairly well entrenched there

        • The ABC is still holding it together journalistically.

          ROTFLMAO.

          You're a funny guy.

        • @Gershom:
Hard to know what you are looking for in terms of news.
The ABC has to meet an independent board that evaluates their news coverage for fairness, which is a bar the Murdoch or Fairfax press notably doesn't have to clear.
Of course, reality has a 'left wing bias' which may discomfort you?

        • @mskeggs: I'm sure the ABC is just as politically unbiased as you are.

in practice liberals don’t engage in the kind of mass rejections of evidence that conservatives do

          Absolute gold!
Thanks for brightening up my Monday morning.

        • @Gershom:
Again, not sure what your point is. I'm pretty strongly left in my views but try to analyse things open mindedly.
My comment stands, the Murdoch press is universally trash, Fairfax has rapidly destroyed their own integrity by sacking so many of their experienced journalists and linking their coverage with advertorial garbage.
The ABC clearly has many journalists who likely vote left, but their opinion doesn't make their reporting incorrect.

If there is a less biased local news source I would happily check it out.

        • @McFly:

The link doesn't work. Also, check this out http://retractionwatch.com/2016/06/07/conservative-political…

          @mskeggs:

I'm pretty strongly left in my views

That is more than obvious. Also more than obvious is your inability to see bias that confirms your views. I agree that most (not all) Murdoch press is crap, but Fairfax is mostly worse except for Fin Review. The Age has become a student rag, oozing rabid socialism. I mean, Clementine Ford? FFS!

I refer you to the immortal words of Mark Twain - A man of 20 who is not a socialist has no heart, a man of 40 who is still a socialist has no brains. When I reflect on the socialist views I held at that age I squirm with embarrassment. If you're lucky, you will too.

        • @Gershom:
Pleased you detected my left leanings, I must be communicating effectively.
Clementine Ford is hardly a source of news, that would be like me criticising Andrew Bolt or Miranda Devine, they are all just egoists poking the hive to get a few clicks or sell a few newspapers.

Fairfax is increasingly reliant on mommy blog posts or TV recaps to drive their clicks. Sad to see in a paper that this year broke some high calibre stories like the 7-11 wages rort and the CBA insurance debacle, but the management there is sacking the journalists and doubling down on real estate advertising.

News limited is weak. News.com.au lead story today is about ABC 4 Corners doing the hard interviews, plus a story on Game of Thrones, the English soccer team or reporting on the coronial inquest into the Martin Place seige. And to be fair, Fairfax has a similar story referencing ABC's Q&A. I reckon that is a tacit admission from both that the ABC is being left to do the 'journalism'.

Funny you should mention changing views as you age. I know a couple of older blokes who were always straight coalition voters, but as they got near the end of their life they started getting much more interested in issues like inequality, and going to church.

I'll risk one day squirming about my views so that I can sleep well at night. The older I get, the clearer it seems to me that we are all in this together, and the best way to fix our problems is collectively. For most issues, that puts me on the left, so be it.

        • @Gershom: It's a quote of mskeggs' link just above - use that one. It's a good laugh.

        • @Gershom: lol

I don’t find this paper at all convincing

          I tend to agree!

        • @Gershom:

I like The Age but Quilton is definitely softer.

  • AFAIK you can pick up Herald Sun for free from Lantham Hotel and Melbourne aquarium.

  • Who reads newspapers?

    • They're good for sharing.
At my work there's always the latest newspaper on the staff room table for people to read during breaks.

  • It's in SA too. Assume it's national.

  • +1

I read newspaper. Reading too much online hurt my eyes.

    • +4

Reading Murdoch rags, even a little bit, will hurt your brain.

      • Better used on the road side to wipe up unexpected spills

  • +2

As a career firefighter I wouldn't read the Herald Sun if you gave me all the Eneloops in the world. Selling the Liberals agenda at the expense of a lot of good peoples mental health.

    • +1

cfa volunteers might buy it now tho

  • Ugh, even half price not interested. The Australian is pure propaganda, nauseating stuff

News arent news anymore just opinion pieces dressed up as news.

I prefer Fairfax but just for local updates, for the most part they are also extremely biased but on the left side.
