Help Me Find The Best Deal on a Laptop

I'm trying to help a friend get a replacement laptop, and I need the Ozbargain Hivemind to assist.

The laptop will be used primarily for spreadsheets and email, but will also be taken on at least 2 long flights every fortnight, so large and heavy devices are not an option. A 13" screen is considered to have insufficient screen space for large spreadsheets - 15" is about right.

Must have:
a) 15" screen with Full HD resolution (higher res is okay but unlikely)
b) Solid State drive 120GB min.
c) Under 2.5kg weight and as thin as possible
d) A 1 year factory warranty (or longer)
e) Windows 8.1 or 10
f) Battery life of 5 hours light use or better
g) No more than $1400, but the cheaper the better
h) From a reputable Australian seller
i) 5th/6th gen i5 dual core and 8GB RAM minimum

Preference given to devices with an integrated optical drive, but this is not essential. A full number-pad on the keyboard would be good, but these are rare on such models. A touchscreen is also preferable but not mandatory.

I am happy to consider refurbished machines from reputable sources if they're a good deal.

So far, my most favoured option is the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 series from the Microsoft Store at $1350.

(Edit: Looking at Cashrewards, it seems that I might be able to switch a better deal direct from Dell via coupon code and cashback….)

I welcome other similar options, or even suggestions out of left field if you can justify them.

Have a close look at 15.6in series from Clevo. If you are not familiar with the band, they are large Taiwanese laptop manufacturers selling bare units to many assemblers, who then sell it under their own names. Check this forum for detailed info: http://forum.notebookreview.com/forums/sager-and-clevo.1017/ In Australia there are a few resellers (to name a few: Metabox, Kong, Affordable Laptops). See for example here:
    http://www.kongcomputers.com/product-listing/gamers.aspx and here:
    http://www.affordablelaptops.com.au/contents/en-us/d6_metabo…

Do not be discouraged that some models are described as "gaming", it just translates to a bit more powerful graphics card inside. Unique advantages: extremely flexible configuration options, very easy to open and service or upgrade. In my experience all Aus resellers provide very high assembly quality and brilliant before/after sale support, thus I always highly recommend Clevo based laptops.

    • Thanks for your response - I appreciate the time you've spent.

I'm very familiar with Metabox devices but haven't really considered them for this application. The cheapest model (Alpha N550RC) with 8GB RAM and 240GB SSD plus Windows 10 is $1400, which is the upper limit of my range. The cheapest model doesn't have an optical drive, which means an extra $50 for an external unit, and a touchscreen isn't available, which would be nice. I don't really need or want a discrete GPU or quad-core CPU - a dual core ULV processor would be fine.

I can get very similar specifications to the Alpha in a smaller, thinner Asus model (N552JV) for about $1300, which is another option I'm looking at.

      Thanks again

  • OK, I understand. Glad to see that you know about Clevo - many people are confused with this brand, and re-branding by resellers.

Here is another unusual suggestion: do you know about Dell discount codes (coupons)? I became aware of this strange phenomena only a few years ago. Google it - various places provide discount codes (send to you by email - use a disposable email address if you are concerned). This system at first almost looks like a scam, but actually it is not, and it works nicely. No personal details or deposits are requested, only your email to send the discount code. My guess is that this is somehow supported, or at least quietly tolerated by Dell — it brings Dell more traffic. From my reading of other people experience: the codes sometimes do not work, but there is nothing lost if such code is rejected. I believe that you can also get discount coupons for some other brands, but I never tried.

Two years ago I got 15% discount on Dell Alienware laptop: I got a discount coupon code by email, and simply entered it on Dell ordering Web page. Magic. However in all fairness many people reported that if you ring Dell sales directly and negotiate, they also offer you large discounts. It appears that Dell marketing is flexible and keen, and the prices on their web page are not locked.

Glad to be of help, and good luck!

  • No full number-pad, touchscreen or optical drive and is 13.3".
But this laptop meets your other requirements and carries a value price in-store @ MSY.

    Acer Aspire V3-372-587T Ultrabook - $899
    6th Gen i5 6200U
    8GB RAM, 256GB SSD
    1.5kg, 5 hr battery
    1920*1080 (1080P)

OR (if you can handle lower resolution)

    Acer Aspire V3-372-56V8 Ultrabook - $769
    6th Gen i5 6200U
    4GB RAM, 128GB SSD
    1.5kg, 5 hr battery
    1366x768

(very similar model video on YT) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sne6ZN89DY0

I would assume you can buy a usb external optical drive & usb number-pad.

I like that these laptops use the latest Intel 6th Gen Processors and are quite thin for their price bracket.
They are rated up to 5hrs battery in MSY's pricelist. So it's quite borderline to the battery life your looking for.

I'm a fan of these budget laptops.
But if these don't meet your requirements check MSY's catalog of laptops.
I often find they can be quite competitive and many stores to pick them up from.

    • I can't find the 8Gb version for 899 on the price list - where is it?

Would something like this work? Seems to check all the boxes. 2-in-1, great keyboard, battery will give ~6 hours of moderate use, according to this review (the non-SSD version).

    • Nice find - thank you. I will check it out.

MSI PE60 - shipped from US:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MSI-Prestige-PE60-15-6-i7-6700HQ-…

Chuck a SSD you sourced from OZbargain and the total price will be well under your budget.

Battery life may come a bit shorter than what you would like to have though.
