If a replica of a replica is "only" $350, then how much for an original?

    • -1

These things I think some where around 1.5-2k …..

      Crazy price tag.

      • +9

Thats not an original if its this low. $6k up

      • +5

        "It's Over 9000!!!"

    • +1

      Bout $8000.

    • x 3 ;)

Costco sold the original when they first opened for 3k and I still regret not buying it. These chairs can actually increase in value.

    • +3

I paid around $8,000 earlier this year. No, it's not cheap. Yes, it is insanely comfortable and beautiful.
Personally, I don't regret a cent of it because I love the design, the history and the era it's from and it's a feature piece in our mid-century modern home.
However, I understand other people thinking the price is ridiculous. If you're interested, this video showing how each chair is made is worth a watch (it's 13 mins long): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbF8QYU4LSA

If "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" that Eames dude must be as flat as a pancake

    • +1

It's rated as the most iconic 20th century piece of furniture.

      • +2

Would never have known about it if it wasn't for the replicas…

  • +3
    • What about an original original from the 50's. I imagine 25k+

    • +1

buy that and people with think you bought a replica any way.

  • These sold out instantly last time it was on sale (at least at the Melb CBD store), people were literally running to get them when the store opened.

  • Are they that amazing? Anyone?

    • +1

No, I find them ridiculously uncomfortable. Gorgeous though.

      Try before you buy.

    • +1

I picked one of these up the last time they were on special in QLD. Maybe 18 months ago?

It's a bit firm when you first use it, but softens up pretty quickly. Also it stinks of fake leather when you first unbox it. It was almost overwhelming.

Be aware: the buttons in the seat cushion can become loose when the chair softens (when you're sitting in it) and could become stuck in clothing. I've come close to tearing them off when I've stood up.

That said, mine has been great otherwise. No serious complaints.

The problem with these chairs is the use of fake cheap leather (Faux Leather). They will look nice for about 3 years and then start peeling off like crazy, hence the big large "1 year warranty" stamp on that product photo. Sample:

If you get a replica, try to get one with better leather, it will be dearer but it should last much longer. e.g. 15+ years.

    • My mother in law is a Nonna so she will put a doily on it

  • +3

    …replica? more like knock-off ;)

  • -7

It appeals to the same group that drives Imprezas, but tries to put the air scoop and pass it off as a wrx. Or wearer of fake rolexs. There's just something unsavoury about it all.

    • +12

      WTF. Who thinks like this?

  • Is Aldi a TD on this forum?

  • Would this be the same as the $700 ones?

    • if those are also replica's then yes as much as a replica can be .. loll

    • compare them buy actually seeing one in person. quality varies a lot, It may be better or may not be.

      • Not planning to buy, just wondering why some replicas are $399, some are $800, some are $1,500

        • we were looking at chairs a while back.
Identical chairs were ata discount store and Freedom.
They looked exactly the same but sitting in them you could feel the difference - the Freedom ones were more solid, didn't wobble when you moved about compared with the cheapie store.
Not saying Freedom is high end, just saying there's different qualities of items that look the same.

whether a $300 Aldi or a $600 XXX brand is different or XXX is just ripping you off is another thing.

  • Just curious how they get past IP infringement?! Surely Eames doesn't like this

    • Furniture patents expired. I think recently (at least in the UK they made it longer).

he and she are both dead that's probably how

  • I got one from Officeworks for $200 on clearance. Pretty epic deal and more proportionally accurate than this. This also has the wrong base on the footstool…should have 4 feet not 5.

    • You are lucky to get one from officeworks at $200.
I was checking the price everyday on their website but it was all sold out in WA before it went on Clearance.
The only clearance stock available back then was in Vic.

      • +1

Yes I got lucky that time. In fact I bought it at $400 then managed to get $200 back from my credit card provider after I found out the price dropped again a week later.

        All thanks to OzBargain!

  • some replicas look better and are buit better than others.
    wonder what this ones like.

  • Correct, these chairs are like Rolex watches. Very nice and very expensive.

I remember them at 5 then 6, now obviously 8 and 12 grand.

The copies are going to be pretty ordinary I would expect.

A wise man says, do something once, do it properly. You be better off.

  • delivery charge? i'm just 3km away from aldi

  • +1

    does it come in white?

  • +1

I was lucky enough to get one. Chadstone store sold out 2mins from opening!
I can say it is faux leather. It is a bit firm but should loosen up. Overall quite happy with the prodcut

    • Got one as well. Too lazy to assemble it but I might do it tonight.

  • +2

Got 2 of these last year when they came out.. thought it was great at the start.. upper west side look and nice addition to the house.. compared them to the original one online and found aldi ones are 2/3 smaller than original and my family found them incredibly uncomfortable. The PU leather is already starting to peel in about 10 months (does get some sunshine in the morning), found the material is cheap and slightly tacky. Better getting a leather and more genuine replical if u want it to last. These are only worth $150 each imo.

  • I purchased one last time and took it back for a full refund within 2 weeks. Can sit on it for long as it is extremely uncomfortable. Sore upper back after sitting in the chair. I don't care how nice it looks if it uncomfortable it's not worth the money.

  • +1

There's still two of these left at Pacific Epping at time of writing if anyone was interested.

  • If you are going to buy a replica Eames may as well pay the extra and get genuine leather. There is definitely enough money for the manufacturer to make a good margin out of that and still supply quality; me and a buddy looked at importing them and were planning to sell for about $699.

They are incredibly comfortable and will last if you can pick up a decent version - this is one of the best prices I've seen for Italian Leather - $999
