Fee for Tax Preparation Higher Due to ABN Income

I've been trying to do my tax back stuff through elodge.com.au

My total income is less than $18200 for the 2015-2016 financial year so I won't even bother to make any deductions as I should get all my tax back anyway.

I fit into their Express package which is only $20 but since I worked on ABN for one week at one company (didn't like working there, so I left) they bump me up to their most expensive Business package which is $85!

I checked some other sites, like etax.com.au and if you want to declare your income you got through ABN they instantly bump up the price really high too.

Anyone got any tips? Should I just go to a nearest random tax accountant or something that won't jack the price up just because I worked on my ABN? Or do all of them do this?

Any input on my problem is appreciated!

You can do it online at the ATO website using My Tax for free.

    • op could be on some sort of dole. so mygov linked to both the ato and centrelink makes it a one-stop-shop.

    • Is it possible to do it if I am not an Australian citizen?
Though, I am resident for tax purposes.

ABN income = business income section. That's why the prices have increased. Either do it yourself or suck it up as that's just the way it is.

    • and don't forget you can always get a cashies loan to help pay for it..

Mytax in my gov is available to all Australian residents for tax purposes regardless of whether they are Australian citizens. Op if you go to the my gov website, just set up an account, link ATO to your account and lodge your tax return online for free. just follow the prompts and read all the instructions.

  • Yeh you should really lodge yourself for free using MyGOV. No need to pay an agent especially since you're under 18k.

If you get stuck call the ato and ask for help or visit one of the shopfronts.

  • Thanks for the help guys, successfully lodged it online (and for free!)
    Hopefully I did everything correct.

Still, why did nobody tell me about this, all I hear is people screaming "USE TAX AGENT ONLY USE TAX AGENT"…
