Got imposed a surcharge at Nextra Chatswood; 5% or $1 for $20 Opal top up

Some Chinese couple in front of me had at LEAST half a dozen AMEX cards between them as they topped up their Opal card(s) …

    • Gotta love a good stereotype live in-action!

      • -2

And that's why Chinese are buying property all over Sydney. They make use of deals and are able to afford property. Is that right?

    • OzBargainer convention? :)

    • Some means more than one couple( 2 couple 4 people?) and together they have 6 Amex cards?

      • I have 9

        • +1

are you chinese? and have you bought property all over Sydney?

        • How do you have so many AMEX cards?

        • We aspire to your level :)

        • possible

2 couples signed up for 2 individual amex card,,, add suppl. cards ( no additional fees) for mum dad sis bro husb wife

      • It was a Chinese couple i.e. two people of Chinese descent … :/

  • What's the process, when a payment hasn't been picked up?

    • +1

What do you mean "picked up"? That you didn't receive a confirmation email after a purchase?

If it's just that the confirmation email hasn't come through, this is quite common and there's no point in contacting Amex yet - usually happens to me on several purchases during any Shop Small promotion (I was quite surprised to receive emails for all 3 purchases this morning LOL) but the credits have always come through within 4-5 days at the most. If the credit doesn't come through after that time frame, then contact Amex to chase it up and as gimme said, they're usually pretty good about sorting it out.

    • +3

Email the through 'securemail' and they'll fix it. In most cases they are very helpful you'll get the credit. Just be polite and don't act self-entitled. That's what I do anyway.

      • Aye, sorry, I meant to ask more politely … I was multi-tasking while typing

        • +1

No you were fine. I meant be courteous when you email them. I've been credited for vendor that aren't on the list by just asking nicely :)

    Success at:
    Darling Park newsagency
    B&J newsagency

We don't accept AMEX (even though on the map) at:
    Central Grocery (near tunnel)
    Devonshire St Newsagency

    • How much surcharge did B&J charge? Thanks!

  • +2

Went to 3 shops below, all failed :(

    * DAILY NEWS ON LITTLE COLLINS (448 LITTLE COLLINS STREET) - no Myki top up with AMEX
    * EZYMART (123 QUEEN ST) - no Myki top up

I can't find any small shop in Melbourne CBD that able to top up Myki this time…

Not sure why the downvotes, but @chinezejew has sent me some tips for Melbourne, thanks man!

        • I think it's to hide his post

My go to place for shopsmall is Prahran market in Melbourne. I went there today and got emails right away from Reliable Fruit, Gary's meat and Cleo's deli. I wanted to buy a pan at Essential Ingredient there and they were not on the list but I thought I would chance it…bingo! got the email. Just goes to show that the map is very unreliable. No email from the pasta place in the market that was plastered with shop small signs. I also got a book at Books in Print in Malvern and more deli stuff from Bambra Deli in South Caulfield so those are all proven.

    • Might try it at Essential Ingredient in Rozelle (NSW) tomorrow morning then! thanks for the heads up

    • I searched for Essential Ingredient on the map and they came up. Thanks for confirming it. Planning to hear there tomorrow.

  • Small Shop map has been ozbargained.

  • I walked past a newsagent in Chatswood and saw the small shop sign, and also opal recharge. As I did a recharge, a guy came up and did 7 and said he was coming back with another 5 cards from home!!!

    • yes, I was there too, a Chinese guy came with 10 Amex card to recharge Opal :)

      • Lol wow. And there's me only doing 2 cards per store per day, thinking 3+ cards would look suspicious.

        • Only in Chatswood. Some people are shameless.

    • NEXTRA in Chatswood Westfield ? If not, where?

      • I received a PM confirming that it was.

        And searching each line.

        • I don't understand what you mean by searching each line.

        • @neil:

Searching each line from your awesome spreadsheet last year. Thanks!!!

Ensuring they are still up in shop small.

Then testing for new locations… unfortunately… it seems to be getting harder as less locations than before are taking up this offer.

        • @chinezejew:

Have added Zouki & Gertrude St.

Good work. Hopefully will get some more testing.

        • @chinezejew:
Have u tried Essendon and demartes this time, they don't seem to be on the map?

        • @99altezza:

They both were on shop small map on Thursday night

        • @chinezejew:
did u receive email for zouki? I didnt get email yesterday

        • @akanie:

I received all emails from Zouki RMH.

        • @chinezejew:
went to zouki again. some transactions I got emails n some dont, so should be fine. thanks

        • @chinezejew:

Amcal Chemist in Carlton is not accepting Amex for Myki. They put a sign at the counter.

        • @neil:

          Aiya… Demarts on Lygon?
          Thanks for the update

        • @chinezejew:

Yep. Demartes Amcal next to Brunettis.

Went to Zouki and got Myki top up. Very easy. Confusing in hospital to find Zouki convenience as it's all Zouki Cafe in the front.

Recharged my Opal in Sydney CBD EZYMARTs with $1 service charge
    EZYMART 300 George St
    EZYMART 58 Pitt St
    EZYMART 14 Carrington St

Got $10 credit notification from AMEX for all 3 transactions immediately!

    • EZYMART 300 George St said machine is not working yesterday

    • EZYMART 300 George St decided to increase their surcharge to $2.

      • Its true. the one on george street wynyard had $2 surcharge. Went to the one on carrington street which is close to it.
Hope that helps for those who are doing their last minute shopsmalling

There wasnt many people as it was raining

    • +1

EZYMART 58 Pitt St also decided to increase their surcharge to $2, and the person there is pretty stern/rude. Insists on only doing 1 card per person. Apparently he is the boss too (French accented guy).

Someone else also mentioned 23 Rawson Place Haymarket - they also increased their surcharge to $2. Decided not to do it.

300 George St (24 hours) surcharged $1 and worked well for me earlier today (flyingfox - what time did you go?)

Also did EZYMART 14 Carrington Street (closes at 12am, I think he said) at $1 surcharge and that worked well too.

Decided to roll the die and do one transaction at Quay Newsagency which used to be part of Shop Small, has the logo outside their shop, but was not on the map this year. Didn't get the email, so I only did one and stopped.

Also did EZYMART 770 George Street (24 hours) $1 surcharge.

edit: Sorry, that was a bit messy.

      TLDR:

EZYMART 14 Carrington Street - got email, $1 surcharge, able to PayPass, close at 12am (or 10pm - forgot, sorry)
EZYMART 300 George Street - got email, $1 surcharge, able to PayPass, 24 hours (however, people say they've increased surcharge to $2)
EZYMART 770 George Street - got email, $1 surcharge, not able to PayPass, 24 hours

      All done between 5-9pm today.

      • That is odd since I went in a little earlier than you did, went in around 4pm… glad you had better luck!

  • Did anyone receive email confirmation after you register your card ? In the past, I normally received it when register manually but not this time. Am I the only one ?

    • I got confirmation on mine

    • No confirmation may be sent if it's an American Express issued card… However you can see it in your 'My Offer' tab when you login

  • +1

Recharged Myki 6x$20 in the below store:

    THE SUMMIT CONVENIENCE STORE
    163 CITY ROAD , SOUTHBANK VICTORIA 3006

No surcharge for first card and $1 surcharge for rest of them (total $5 surcharge for 6 Amex cards). Received Amex confirmation mails for all the 6 cards.

  • River Cat Convenience @ Parramatta refused AmEx this morning… Shame, $60 sale they lost.

    • That's disappointing, I had two shops this afternoon refuse Amex even though they're on the shop small list. Even offered to pay a surcharge at one of them and she still refused. Guess not all these shops are interested in increased patronage.

      • Report to Amex, believe they will credit you the money, and probably have a word with merchant.

        • Thanks, yeah I'll be speaking with Amex today, not sure they'll credit me though because I didn't end up buying anything.

  • Just went to The Tiny Giant cafe listed in Petersham. Listed on the website as G & D CICCO ENTERPRISES PTY LTD which I confirmed is the same business. Said they don't take AMEX….

  • +1

Heads-up: Went to BLACK STAR PASTRY Newtown this morning. Bought something. Said they don't take Amex. Tapped Amex card anyway to try and it didn't work :( it's on the list, together with other locations (City, Rosebery). So annoying:(

  • Anyone been to IGA Annandale for opal top up? It's not in the list but still got Amex shop small sticker on. Thx

  • +1

For the past years AMEX SHOP SMALL I experienced the same thing that businesses were on the list but they didn't accept AMEX. I contacted AMEX and they gave me $10 credit. Try contacting AMEX.

  • Do both cards work if you have an additional card for a family member (joint with the main card)?

    • +1

You need to register for shop small with both cards (go to switch cards in Amex connect) and they need to have different card numbers.

      • -1

I think you can't with supplementary cards. I don't see an option to switch the cards in offers area on website.

        • Just go to menu & 'switch card', then register for the offer again with the new card. If you haven't registered the new card go to 'add card' first.

        • @lisamay: Whoa.. I had added the additional card to my online account but the system needs its separate registration (username and pw) to make it eligible for offers, which I did now and it works. I can now save offers on both cards using their individual accounts.

        • @virhlpool: CBA offers the same credit card number for additional card, so it may not work

  • Hi, is there any indian grocery store in Brisbane north? The one in Carseldine wont accept Amex at all.

    • Most convenience stores don't accept Amex any way.

      • So much for convenience aye lol

        • Convenience stores had inflated prices, don't accept all cards and have limited hours. Such an irony, they are still called 'convenience stores'.

    • +1

All Indian and Chinese store sucks, they don't take AMEX..except one in Udaya Wentworthville

      • If spend is more than $10, it doesn't suck. Otherwise it does.

      • Little India in wenthworthville plaza takes Amex with 2% surcharge and is in shop small map

  • +3

    For those in Brisbane

Go to Garden City and recharge your go cards!

I topped up my go card at Nextra on the bottom floor and Nextra on the top floor successfully, got two Amex emails within 10 mins saying $10CR is on its way.

  • GEORGE STREET NEWS 370 GEORGE STREET , BRISBANE QLD 4000 (Tel: 07 3236 5533)
Go card charged in Brisbane yesterday. Received an email for Qantas card but not for bank issued card.
Please call before going, as I am not sure whether they are open on weekends.
