2nd one is 11.6, as in the body, title here ( and jb website says 15.6" )

    • Cheers, just copy-pasting :)

For the ones that may be concerned that the Chromebook only has 16GB SSD ; Google provides 100GB of cloud storage to almost all users. This link shows you how to redeem it :) Thanks OP!

    • Are you sure? 100gb is not transferable and I suspect the original owner of the chromebook redeemed the 100gb. Can't see any mention of it on JB hifi page.

I think it will fail at step 4 in your link

      1. Click "Allow" when the pop-up asks to make sure you are eligible.

This is where Google will access the Chromebook (serial numbers etc I'm guessing) and will check credentials for eligibility.

You can plug in a high capacity sd card for storage but the card will stick outside the chassis on this model.

Also I believe the correct model number is CB3-111 which is on the Google approved list of operating android apps in the future.

100gb is not transferable and I suspect the original owner of the chromebook redeemed the 100gb

The 100gb is not registered on the device itself, the google account which it relates to is. Unless the previous owner has the same account as you, OR you already have a chromebook and you have redeemed the 100gb, you can still claim the 100gb cloud storage.

        • +1

          Ok. Thanks for clarification

        • +1

@TightBottom: Also you can just make a new google account if you have already claimed the 100GB on an existing account. I had one of these back at uni and they were great for accessibility and ease of use as almost everything was stored on cloud and you really didn't have to worry about carrying a flash drive. The only downside being is that you cant use MS Office packages on this, however google have their own version which can easily be converted into MS word or anything else if required :)

        • @stuhtb:

Also free access to ms office online I believe

        • Actually - The T's & C's say "This offer is tied to your device and is non-transferable." & "Offer must be redeemed within 180 days of your device activation." & "refurbished devices are not eligible for the offer."-

          Terms and Conditions

You'll have storage for 2 years, starting on the date you redeem the offer. Accessing online files requires an internet connection. This offer is tied to your device and is non-transferable. If this device is returned, extra storage will be revoked. Offer must be redeemed within 180 days of your device activation. Offer is available in all countries where Google Drive is available. Offer can only be redeemed once per device. Used, open-box, and refurbished devices are not eligible for the offer.

        • @quakka:

Good find. Thought I had read this somewhere in recent years while researching chromebooks.

        • +1

@quakka: Thanks, it kinda makes sense that you can't use it on a refurbished device, however I was able to claim mine even though the Chromebook was already used by someone before? I had got mine at high school a few years back at school. Then I am assuming that the school had some cloud storage plan where new accounts were being permitted to claim the google cloud 100GB plan? It says here that You can redeem each offer once per Chromebook, or once per Google Account. So I am guessing there is some exception for schools?

@TightBottom I take back what I have said if the T&C strictly apply, unless there is a way to bypass it? Thanks for pointing this out @quakka much appreciated. The T&C are here for anyone that wants to have a read.

Normally $998 is a hughly marked up price. You can get a brand-new much better spec one with $998, especially with frequent 20% off ebay tech sale. Acer is not known for quality. Refurbishing low quality ones is even worse.

Nothing special about these prices for refurbished laptops

    • +4

Feel free to find something special then

      • +1

These are the usual prices for refurbished laptops so I don't have to find a similar price

The 11 inch chrome book I posted a similar deal last year for ~ $160 delivered from Amazon brand new FYI

        • +1

IMO local supplier, warranty and support tops buying from Amazon..

        • @jungleboy:

Amazon will cover return shipping cost for 1 year for warranty so no fuss buying from them . Last return I did was for a pico projector . They paid me back the $160 shipping and sent me a new one

Link if you have time. I can't find 1080 deals in search. $220 AUD or USD

        • @TightBottom:

  • So many Refurbished is it because they may have design problem?

    • +1

Usually motherboard problems I.e. Overheating, GFX artefacts etc or screen issues . They get repaired and repackaged for sale

They also have a higher rate of failure

    • +1

All manufacturers sell refurbs. JBs often have Samsung refurbs for example

    • +1

A lot of big companies sell refurbs, even Apple sell them direct off their own site. It's just the way things are, busted ones get fixed, cleaned up, and flogged off.

      • +1

Yeah I understand. I saw some brand and particular model having the same problem with difference people, so must be a design fault.

Hopefully they really fixed the problem and put them back to market. Otherwise it may happen again after sometime.

        • +1

Everything is usually Soldered on chromebooks these days so if one component fails , the whole laptop fails . Simply repairing the motherboard (which they do most of the time), simply doesn't solve the issue . Unless they replace the whole mobo , it's more likely to fail again .

This is why most companies only offer 3 months warranty on refurbs

  • +2

I purchased a Toshiba refurb last year during the Masterpass 20% off sale - upon receipt it appeared brand new, not a blemish anywhere. Installed an SSD & an extra stick of RAM and I've got a high spec machine for a very affordable price. Why pay retail when you can grab something just as good for significantly less…isn't that the spirit of our community?

  • not sure about acer i had a key come off on keyboard on my laptop and contacted acer and they said keyboard not covered under warranty.

    • +1

Either keep pressing on and deny that it's not your fault that you broke it, just say it was flimsy to begin with.

Under ACL anyway the keyboard should be replaced, but keyboards are considered to be CRU (Customer replaceable unit) meaning that they might not send you a technician but just send you a new keyboard and service manual, and then you send back the faulty keyboard. You'd replace the keyboard yourself.

Lenovo has this kind of scheme, not sure if Acer has this still. Their customer service and support can be very hit and miss.

      • +1

I talked to support and they said keyboard is not covered and wouldnt budge he said a new one was around 150 i think but i only paid 243 for the ES1-411-C1WD Laptop.

        • +1

          new one was around 150

Yeah. Not worth it. I would go to eBay or Aliexpress and look for keyboard replacements instead. You should not be paying more than $30 AUD for a new KB. They are very cheap direct from the factory.

There are american sites like http://www.laptopkey.com/ and http://www.quikfixlaptopkeys.com/ who stock single keys for around $3 to 4 USD dollars and also charge $2-5 dollars to ship internationally. So it might cost you anywhere between 6-12 or so US dollars to replace one key. You can try those guys if you want.

        • @scrimshaw:
Found a keyboard on aliexpress looks the same as mine are they easy to fit.
