But the Dell is $100 less, has FHD screen (with touch), DVD drive (still handy)

So you get more, and pay less with the Dell…!

    • +2

      Exactly.

better option in my price range $800

I don't get why OP would choose this over the Dell. How the hell is it a better option?

    • +2

      So where's the bargain

    • +1

14" vs 15 screen. some prefer portability.

  • I would probably add $100 and get the one with dedicated video memory and i7

  • +7

Add SEPWELC2016 at checkout for 10% off. Replace 1st three letters every month for 10% off.. like OCTWELC2016 for 10% in October.

    • You can't stack them.

      • +4

        That's obvious!

  • This has a better battery than the Dell, and would last longer due to the lower res screen, but this is clearly the inferior choice.

  • The Dell is better. I would only buy a E460 with a FHD display… which this one does not have.
The $899 E460 with FHD & Discrete graphics is a better option.

  • 14.0" HD(1366x768)

No 1080p FullHD screen, the Dell wins hands down.

  • Lenovo bargains better than this in the past

Everyone recommending the Dell. It is a shite option if you want any hope of viewing X265/H265/HEVC videos in the near future. I've had my issues with Lenovo in the past, but the E460 has a Skylake processor which supports hardware decoding of next gen codecs.

    • It'll be so nice to watch your movies… on a 1366x768 screen…!

      • -1

Better than not being able to watch them at all

        • -2

Sorry, didn't realise you couldn't convert video files, or simply 'acquire' a different file.

        • Sorry, didn't realise you couldn't connect an external monitor or TV, or simply pay $810 for the upgraded version with a HD display, dedicated graphics and i7 processor.

The versatility gained by being able to decode these formats will no doubt be important to many as they become more popular due to their attractive quality to filesize ratio.

          @tony abbott:

          i7 model isn't $810, it's $899 - Can't stack coupons

So it's $200 more than the Dell.

Or do you like comparing apples to bananas?

Why pay more in the first place, just for some codec which you think is going to become more prevalent? It could just as easily be wiped out by another codec that comes along.

Or, alternatively, convert the file or find another one. Not hard.

        • @Spackbace:

My friend. X265/H265 provides higher quality for smaller filesize. To transcode a file before using it would require a long time (greater than the duration of the file) and therefore be inconvenient.
For example a 2 hour movie would take >2 hours to convert from H265 to H264 on a machine that can't decode H265 at real time.

My mistake with regards to stacking of coupons, but the Dell is not necessarily a better deal than this. You are accusing me of comparing apples to bananas but you are the one who brought the Dell up in this thread about the Lenovo laptop.

Obviously we have different priorities in buying a new laptop. At $720 the i5 version with non full HD screen has vastly better next-gen video performance for an extra $21. It also has business grade support and build quality. That is clearly more important to me than it is to you, and that is fine.

    • Are these formats not easily handled by software decoding (i.e. utilising the CPU) already?

      • Not well. I've had i5-5200U and a i5-6300U laptops. Similar in all other aspects The one with the last gen 5000 series processor really didn't do well with just a 720p H265 file but the newer one is fine.

    • @tony, I know that technology is not your strength but this computer - or pretty much any new computer - would have no issues decoding HEVC in software. So you have every hope of watching HEVC videos in future. Your CPU will be working harder but it won't be the end of the world.

  • Can any ozbargainers please comment on the quality of this laptop?
How is it's general performance (smooth or not?) and size/portability?

Am looking to get a this exact model!

    • +1

It's rated above average, it has a good keyboard and decent build quality. It has good Thermal performance and does not throttle much. The 47 whr battery is a good size and can last 5 or 6 hours or even more if on maximum power savings mode.

However it is the very entry level model and it should not be compared to a proper business Thinkpad T or X series,or Dell Latitude or HP Elitebook, so the chassis is just plastic.

The screen is not very good, the viewing angles are bad. The display is usually customisable during the checkout process but you pay more for the FHD panel. It is worth it.

Try not to buy a low resolution TN panel, especially for displays bigger than 13 inches.

Anyway don't buy this, there are better Lenovo deals in the past.
