Modem Died. Please Recommend Something Good for NBN & Lots of Kids

G'day all.
* I have the NBN 25/5 service which runs at almost full speeds as we are right next to the tower.
* We have 6 kids who play PS4, Xbox One online, Youtube etc. The internet is always being used in this house and can cop a beating.
* The house is a large early 1900's house with cement internal walls.
* Wifi in the house was o.k with the old Telstra modem, but I use a TP Link 300Mbps range extender to help at the back of the house.

The old Telstra modem died, so rather than deal with them and get the same again, I'd like to buy something new and better.
I have 300 dollars to spend, maybe more if it can justify the cost and I am not very tech savy, so I was hoping for something easy to set up.

Have had a look around at other discussions as well as Google, but it's all a bit confusing.

Thanks very much everyone.

Ah, missed that when looking here.
That discussion was talking about bridging one with the existing modem and stuff and it was confusing the hell out of me.

I'm looking at an all in one modem/router, as I won't have an existing modem yeah?
First time buying something like this so learning as I go.

      Thanks.

      • I don't know much about modems sorry. I do think it is probably best to wait for the next good OzBargain modem deal

Yeah, just trying to research as much as I can now as it looks like there's 20% off at ebay soon with some of the stores who sell this stuff.
Just getting prices from them now to see if they jack them up at the sale or not.

          For the record…
          Futu Online - D7000 - $319.00.
          PC BYTE - D7000 - $319.00
          PC BYTE - D7000 - $329.00 with bonus item on 2 listings.

        • @rattle: Oh cool! Will be good to see what happens.

  • The Tower?

NBN Fixed Wireless i'm guessing. If so, no need for a modem as there is an NTD so just a router will do.

  • Yep, sorry. Fixed Wireless NBN.

I would take a look at something like an ASUS AC68U or Netgear Nighthawk R7000. They're basically identical as far as performance with the ASUS perhaps being more practical as far as looks.

These are fairly expensive routers but they have powerful processors to handle all the users in your house and very strong WiFi performance. If you are used to cheap routers such as ones supplied by your ISP you may notice many problems suddenly disappear and your internet starts working properly.

In terms of setting up it's hard for me to say but I think they ought to work out of the box. The management interface has basic and advanced tabs but it can be intimidating for new users just starting to use any router. But you can google for issues since these are popular routers.

Yeah you only need a router, my R7000 works great
