PC for Gaming - Upgrade and Keep or Sell

Hi all,
First of all I would like to thank you for your time.
The question is, I'm not heavy gamer, but sometimes play games such as Tombraider, cod, BT and etc (4 hours per week). I bought a gaming PC (collected and installed it myself) 4 years ago as follow:
I know I need to upgrade my RAM, but was wondering can I only change my graphic card or I need to update motherboard, and also CPU?
Is it better to sell the whole and build from scratch?
Is it possible to upgrade it less than $500 or I need to sell it off and buy another for $2000?

PS: I bought the whole case (no monitor and etc) for $2000 in 2013.

CPU: Intel BX80633174820K Quad Core i7-4820K 3.7 Ghz 10MB LGA 2011 CPU
Mother Board: ASUS Rampage-IV-GENE X79 LGA2011 pin 4x DDR3
Ram: Kingston HyperX – 8 gig (DDR3 2400)
Graphic: Asus GTX770 2G PCI-E VGA Card
Case: Thermaltake Black USB 3
Power: not sure, but it was really good, bought it more than $200 in that time

Also, what is your estimation for sell the whole case (without SDD), thanks

Thanks again

yes you can buy a new gpu and replace current one.
if you could up your budget to about$600 you could get a gtx 1070.

  • also, is it worthy do change my cpu? (does it show the difference)

      No need mate it's fine.

Don't think you should get a new PC, the CPU/mobo is sufficient for gaming but as noted above, the GPU is getting a bit long in the tooth.

RE: RAM - DDR3 is about the same price as DDR4 but if you don't want to upgrade CPU/mobo, you can just get some DDR3 ram instead of DDR4. 2 x 8 GB should cost you about $100. Don't think you need more than that for gaming.

    • Cool, so what price range you recommend for GPU so I can handle it with my mobo?

$560 for a 1070 is a neat choice. If you want to pay a bit more at around $860, you can get a 1080. If that's too much then you can get a 1060 for maybe 400 or so but keep in mind that the GPU is the most important part for gaming.

If you want the best of the best, Titan X (pascal) will cost you about $1.5k after customs and duties.

If you're a fan of AMD then you can get a rx 480 for about 400.

        • thanks mate

To me it looks like all you need is new video card, nothing else to play every title at maximum settings.

Assuming you are using a 1920x1080 without Freesync/Gsync monitor the choice comes down to either a 6GB GTX 1060 or GTX 1070. The 1070 will allow maximum settings in every game more or less at 60 FPS. A GTX 1060 will involve some compromises in image quality but still give results that put current generation consoles to shame.

Cheapest I've seen GTX 1070 is $539 (Amazon). GTX 1060 6GB is much cheaper.

      Exactly this.

You're setup looks pretty good, and need very little upgrades.

      1) I would get another RAM stick 8GB… for best performance, buy the same stick you have.
So a total of 16GB of RAM will serve you well. You won't need 32GB's unless you're doing graphics rendering for architecture or making animated films.

      2) Sell your GTX 770.
You won't get much for it. Maybe $50 if lucky.
So a better use might be to stick it into another computer to up its performance.
Or maybe even passing it onto a friend who wants to game.

      Buy a new GPU.
The 6GB GTX 1060 is pretty much up there in terms of bang-for-buck for new cards.
The 8GB GTX 1070 will let you future-proof your rig for quite a while, and its still okay in terms of b-f-b.
The 8GB GTX 1080 is the best out there, and it'll future-proof you for at least 5 years to run all new titles at Ultra/High at 1080p60 (or better).

See this previous thread/posts of mine.

      • great, thanks mate

      • 770 for $50…?

        • Unfortunately the market for used graphics cards, especially ones that are quite a few years old isn't very kind.

That's why I suggested he should give it to a brother/friend, or stick it into another pc he has lying around…
…better than the integrated Intel GPU/AMD APU for sure.

        • It's really long in the tooth.

Agree with Kangal, just give it away. Or keep it as a backup card, incase OP needs to RMA a GPU someday.

      • Ill buy that card for $50 XD

If you're going the GPU upgrade route just make sure you have enough clearance on the inside for the card you choose. Last few upgrades I've done for folks over the last few months have been a pain due to size constraints. You can usually find the information of exact measurements for the case and card on the product page online.

The RAM you've got now isn't bad, could use an additional stick of 8GB. Have you set the XMP profile in the BIOS to run the RAM at that clock speed?

  • They still sell the Kingston HyperX so you could just buy another 8GB stick of it rather than replacing the one you have, just make sure you get the DDR3 one and not DDR4 and you'll be fine :)

Upgrade GPU to GTX 1060 6GB, NVIDIA GTX 1070 or AMD RX480 and you're set.

  • thanks all, to be honest, I dont have size for another ram (due to my giant cpu fan), so I need to replace them.
so that's good, I only need to change GPU, thanks all for your great help.

    • Everyone has that problem, you just need to get low profile RAM and not the comically oversized ones.
