Nexus 5x Camera Lag

Hi guys

Long Time lurker first time poster.

Just copped the Nexus 5x from the recent DWI eBay deal and I received it today. Sadly when I started using it, I noticed there was a big problem with the camera.

It takes nearly 2 seconds for the camera to capture anything from the moment I press the capture button. I find this to be ridiculous given that my mum's $150 LG Smart phone fires away instantly. So anyways I was wondering if any of you guys who purchased it had the same problem with the phone?

If it is found that I'm a unique case which means I've probably got a dud one, how has your experience been with faulty returns for DWI?

Thanks guys!

  • Sorry! I didn't know that there was a mobile phone forum category.

  • I don't have that problem with my Nexus 5x. There is a very small lag but its a fraction of a second, nowhere near 2 seconds.

    • Ah that's bittersweet. At least I have reasonable grounds for a return but I just wish it was working fine from the get go. Did you by any chance get it from DWI or any other online retailer that sells grey Market stock ?

  • Go into your settings and check them.

I find that auto flash makes a delay, facial recognition, hdr and so on.
Once they are sorted then it should fire quicker then you can blink.

If that doesnt help install a thirdparty camera app to see if that fixes it if not then do a reset of the device and do check the camera again.

    • I've cleared camera cache, did factory reset, downloaded like five different third party apps that other Nexus users reccomend but none of the aforementioned helped :( still the same abysmal delay with the capturing

      • What about update of os?

        • Yep, latest nougat 7.0. Took the risk despite all that fuss about boot loop after updating. Still doesn't change anything. Oh yeah sorry also turned off the hdr and flash settings.

        • @lunatesurface:

Turn off the GeoTagging. Go to Settings and turn off the Save Location.
Clear App Cache. Goto Setting > App Manager > Select Camera App > Clear Cache.
Remove the Camera App from Battery Optimisation.

          Then test again.

        • +1

@Hotkolbas: Was really hoping the battery optimization would fix it. Tried these suggestions and still no changes in the performance. Thanks a lot for your suggestions though.

        • @lunatesurface: try this:

First do this….Settings – Security and disable “Power button instantly locks.

          If not then this…

          Safe Mode:

Hold the power button after ensuring the screen is on.
Tap and hold the Power off selection in the menu
Tap OK to initiate Safe Mode.
Test the camera in safe mode.

If that doesnt work im out of ideas… from what i see it could be a known issue.

        • @Hotkolbas: No luck :(

Edit: Most people have a problem with the camera lagging when they try to initially launch it, not really when they try to capture a photo which is what I'm facing.

  • Try resetting your camera first and if that doesn't work, reset your phone.

  • This is a long shot but have you gone down a custom rom path?

Not saying to do it but all avenues are spent bar this one but first i would see if you can do a warranty claim first.

    • Nah I haven't done that yet, but I feel like this is a hardware issue rather than anything software related. I opened a return request on eBay and also submitted a RMA form on DWI's webpage. Fingers crossed they're able to do something about this, especially since I just got it yesterday lol.

    • Heres a vid i sent to DWI showing the shutter lag. Might not seem like much to some people, but a 1-2 second delay versus a fraction of a second is huge when it comes to capturing moments. Double checked 'hands on' videos on YouTube to compare the speeds to make sure I wasn't crazy.

  • That has got some lag.

My s5, and note 2 are very fast in comparison.

Good luck in getting the warranty claim.

    • Yeah my friend who also got the Nexus 5x from the same deal has no issues with his camera. Badluck i suppose. Thanks again for all your help mate

      • You got lucky i supose, was stuck at the dealers getting my car serviced so i had some time to kill.

Love that the s5 has an iR blaster. Got to take over the tv and put it to good use.

  • How did you go with this OP? I'm thinking about geting a 5X from DWI but want to know if they were helpful at all with your issue first?

    • They rejected the return so I had to do a PayPal dispute to get it refunded. Got ruled in my favour. I would assume that most people have to go through pay pal to get anything moving when dealing with DWI

      • Thanks. So you got a refund via paypal, but able to keep the phone as well?
