$4.50 for 2 scoops of ice cream or stock up on half price connoisseur ice cream?

I think we all know the answer to that

    • Two scoops at San Churro or Two LITRES of Bulla Chocolate or Strawberries and Cream Ice Cream at Coles or Woolies. Of course the Woolies Bulla deal on ice cream bars can't be beat.

    San Churro prices are ridiculous.

    • No different to any store really. B&J's, Cold Rock, Baskins etc, easily over $6 for an ice-cream.

True, but they're specifically ice-cream vendors. When San Churro turned up near us last year we went down for a try, but got to the counter and saw it was something like $12.95 or $13.95 for 3 churros and sauce. I don't mind paying a fair price, but it seemed more like we were paying for the expensive fit-out of the franchise (and the stores do look good).

I can't say I know of many, if any, food places that charge much less than them, or the others I listed. It's not like they're going to charge Maccas/HJs prices for a better product. So I don't know what you're actually comparing to, to get to the idea that they're expensive.

        • @Spackbace: So I don't know what you're actually comparing to, to get to the idea that they're expensive.

You're correct in that I am not comparing them to another Aussie store selling churros, but I don't need to in order to reach a personal conclusion that they are overpriced.

A trip to the states obviously makes it hard to cough up for Aussie San Churro prices. Even Disneyland was selling foot-and-a-half churro's for less than $2, let alone the 3 for a dollar (or less) you could get without looking hard.

Also I've made them at home on occasion when I can be fagged, it's butter/sugar/flour/vanilla/egg and not much else, and with scale I'm guessing the ingredients in each churro cost San Churro less than 5 cents.

When you say that what San Curro charges is pretty standard for Australia, I don't doubt it whatsoever, it just still doesn't represent any value to me.

Thing is, the local store looks a million bucks, and, taking into account overheads, fitouts, personnel etc, you obviously can't expect it to be anywhere near as cheap as the US or home-made…….but…… if it was 3 churros more realistically priced at say $6-8 they would've have had us regularly.

But that's no different to me saying that I can make a coffee at home for a few cents, but I actually like to go out and do things. I could churn ice-cream at home for the cost of the milk, and then freeze it, ready to take out the next day to enjoy in the sun down at the beach… but again, I like to do things.
Cost of something in another country shouldn't even be in your mind when you buy things here, or else you'll be constantly miserable! You'll always walk around going "Oh, my internet is slow and expensive, I wish I lived in the US", or "wow that street food is expensive, damn it was so much better in Thailand".

But things are relative. Cheap food in the US sure, but try going to the doctors/hospital.

I can choose to make a coffee at home, but I actually like to get out of the house on the weekend and do things.

We have to essentially play the card we're dealt. If you want better than Maccas/HJs, you have to pay the price, and deals like this take the burn out of it, so to speak. I constantly look out for Shop-a-docket deals for Baskins (normally easy to find), because I'd rather pay more than Maccas for a better product, even though I'm paying more after the discount from the voucher! I regularly pay more for a cafe made iced coffee, rather than going into a store and buying a carton of the stuff - paying more for better quality, and the place we're at to enjoy it with.

Unless you sit at home, in a bubble, and hand-make every single product, you have to spend extra money somewhere. It's all a matter of how much extra money you choose to spend, for the 'experience' you're at, be that food related (restaurant/cafe etc), or anything really (think cinemas, why pay when you can watch it a year later on FTA TV for free…).

@Spackbace: I understand all that mate, and I hope it was clear in my response where I am not doubting that San Churro prices are fairly standard for churro's in Oz, making this a good deal for some.

Also, I certainly expect to pay extra- a lot extra- for the privilege of sitting in someone else's establishment, eating food that staff have been paid to prepare for me, and do so all the time.

My bug-bear with San Churro is more about that particular item- churro's- rather than the general concept of paying more for something that someone else has prepared, in their establishment. San Churro prices seem to reflect the cost of the obviously-expensive fit-out and have little relation to the cost of what they make (apart from the prices making the franchisee's ability to cover the initial investment more viable), yet that's their franchise model, and it's their business how they choose to model their franchises.

Churro's are a pretty awesome snack, but I'm happy to wait a bit longer for newer vendors to bring prices down to a more realistic level.

Anyway, your post is getting enough upvotes to suggest that others see good value in this deal, just not me ahaha but I'm a tough sell.
