Looking to Buy a Brand New Car (~ $80,000) - Recommendations?

Uni graduate soon (21), will be entering Westpac as an Investment Analyst.

Private use, travels around 13K a year. Most of the time My girlfriend and i in the car.

Only considers SUV, Coupe or Sedan.

Not looking for a performance car but can't be underpowered.

Priority in decending order LOOK>Quality>Comfort>Performance>Technology>Resell>Safety

Currently considering MB GLC Coupe>C class coupe> CLA/ AudiS3.

EDIT: CX3 wasn't mine to begin with. It's more like a family car where I did the majority of driving but ultimately my mom bought it for my sister.

Camry was already sold.

  • I would go with your first choice - the MB GLC Coupe. It's a very nice car.
But don't skimp on the model and pay a little extra for the AMG version.

As you said, its an investment and the AMG might have better resale value.
It's what an investment banker would buy….

  • +1

Interested that you spelled mum as mom. Are you American?

    • +14

'mom' is the past tense of 'mum' - ie. after you've sold her.

      • +2

I wondered if he's a troll given the interesting spelling for a clearly Oz based website and user base.

  • +8

In the off chance this isn't a troll post:

Under $80k cars that look amazing(drive well):

-BMW 428i with M sport kit. (I absolutely love the looks of this car).
-2017 Audi A5, with S-line kit (new model is coming out).
-Audi S3 is nice, but it's more a performance car. Even a 1.8T Audi A3 sedan with a few options (S-line kit, Sunroof, Tech Package) would be great for you, and you could do all of that for around $55k.
-Mercedes C250 with AMG Kit (very nice to look at).
-2017 Audi Q5 (new model is coming out) - if you feel like an SUV.
-BMW M2 (If you can stretch the budget to $100k).
-Audi RS3 (Only comes in hatch, so it's not really that great looking for some (I LOVE IT) but amazing to drive.)
-BMW 340i/328i with m sport kit (looks great, drives well).
-Mercedes CLA AMG 45 Sedan is nice (I'm not a huge fan, but a lot of people seem to like it).
    -BMW X3 with M-Sport Kit if you're into SUV's.

I went with prestige brand only for the suggestions, I get the impression that's more your style.

I would personally own an Evo10 Final edition or something similar…

Ahh, this was a fun little list to make. It's nice to dream sometimes.

    All the best mate :)

    • Mercedes C250 with AMG Kit ? that would be more than 80k :)

  • I bought a brand new 2016 VW Touareg 150tdi Element for $67000 and love it. If I could afford it I would have gone for the next model up at $80000 the V6 tdi, has a bit more power, air suspension, 19 inch wheels. Overall I would recommend this SUV, it ticks all your boxes and feels great to drive

    • +4

He can use it to haul his gigantic ego around in

      • -2

And you can carry on hating. Make sure you pay your $2 for parking.

        • I believe I may have hit a nerve by implying you had no class by choosing a flashy car purely because its flashy

…sorry did i say 'implying'? i meant to say 'stating'

  • +1

I think that this guy just came to the wrong website.

  • +4

You've got no chance making it as an investment analyst if you seriously think this is a good idea!

  • +11

This has to be a troll.

No way anybody with ideas this stupid slips through to a big 4 grad position. No way.

Car an investment with high yield? Ahahahahahaha

  • Strongly disagree with decision. But back on topic. Car for 80k that's all about looks.

C250. It's an aggressive looking sedan with a above average fit and finish for a mainstream luxury sedan. Ride quality is typical sedan - floaty, bouncy but low road noise. Sound system is great and infotainment system is not buggy.

Man did I cop a bag of sh!t when I spent 60k on a new car. I'm a hobby mechanist and racer earning >100k then and I accept that it is a bad financial decision.

  • +2

Prove you're not a knob and get a Dacia Sandero.

  • Wrong site mate, you need luxurylivingforme.com

At OZB we all want to save to try to live moderately not up there in a complete different world.

On the other hand, I can get you this top of the line exquisite car, as new condition $80,000 drive away no more to pay if you can organise a bank cheque and post it and I will be in touch with the delivery details.

    • +4

I don't think you can categorise us here. I use Ozbargain to get better quality for the same money, rather than saving money.

      • But you are ultimately saving though

  • Others seems to have given you great suggestions for a car. I do have some alternatives if you decide to skip the car.

Pay out your HECS debt (if you have one), help the peeps out that'll be studying at university in the future.

At Westpac they match employee charity dollar for dollar, donate $80k to a charity if you really want to earn some respect.

Get another postgraduate qualification while you're working.

      • No, those are good suggestions.

      • +3

Wow, That was a pretty nasty way to respond to one of the few people here who took you seriously.
        Seriously just nasty.

Go buy your car please. Then borrow another 100K for an expensive holiday, and do it every year or be known as a loser.
And make sure you keep that car up to date by replacing it each year, because driving last years car makes you just a wannabe.
And don't forget all the plastic surgery to keep you and your girlfriend pretty.

Or take onboard that being nasty and shallow means that people will eventually learn to hate you. That includes your family. If you have children they will either hate you or be nasty like you screw you over. And maybe when you are older you will have a different perspective and understand that having an over the top nice car when you were a kid meant nothing at all. Not a thing.

  • +8

I'm 22 and spent $8000 on a car 3.5 years ago. I bought a 2001 BMW 318i with 70,000km on it. I recently started doing work on it myself such as the window regulator to cut maintenance costs down. I saved it up for it but I think I could have made a wiser decision.

I don't think ozbargain is the best community to consult with, not because you are spending $80,000, but because you aren't showing any of that money respect. You got a degree in finance, don't get ahead of yourself. Don't think that you will be on $200k next year, a lot of those business analyst jobs have high earnings at the start but can stagnate. As for your understanding of economics, arrogant. I can only assume you are arrogant or just trolling.

    • -1

Why do i have to show respect for money..? I am not saying i will go $x next year. I am saying i wanna accomplish my high school dream because i can. To be honest, i never thought degree is a thing, only connection is valuable and worth feeling good about.

  • +26

Have just spoken to my HR contact at Westpac and she is very amused. She's promised to do some digging.

    • +1

If this is true… OP's in a lot of trouble!

      • +4

Why? Westpac cant tell you what to drive

        • +1

@Ohhmygod: But OP later explained that by investment he meant - connections/status symbol. Not saying i agree/disagree but surely an investment analyst grad would know what a good investment is

        • Nope , but they sure can take offence at someone using their position and job title in a public forum to gain status and credibility then acting on any level unprofessional.

      • +1

For what? He's coming across as a spoilt entitled kid (still not sure if trolling) but he's not attacking anyone or doing or proposing anything illegal or unethical.

If anything HR staff going through personnel files to satisfy their own idle curiosities would be the ones getting in trouble if access to files is monitored. Even if you could pinpoint the OP amongst all the new hires, I'm not sure what it'd achieve to be honest.

        • Exactly. The HR can't tell anyone who it is - even if they figure it out.

        • @macrocephalic:
What makes you say that? He has most probably already breached 'official' policies by even discussing Westpac or his role there.
Now they have received a complaint about his conduct from the public, which is plenty of reason to check him out which is HR's job.

Truely I've worked plenty of places where this guy would definitely be up for an official lecture if not an informal warning.

        • +1

OP might as well wave a red flag with "HIGH RISK" written on it over his head.

New hire / recent grad with a flash car at double his take-home pay? I used to work in Compliance at Westpac, and that's a good way to get on the radar of Group Audit. I should point them at this thread.

Used to work with a similar bloke who liked 'impressing' everyone by paying for coffee with shiny $100 notes - he got fired for theft (on the scale of stealing petty cash). Idiot.

OP may eventually figure out it's not what you have but what you do that impresses people.

I'm at another bank now and I'm on $250k/year ($1000/day), as are my colleagues. (Most of them would be higher paid, I don't care.) We all catch public transport to work. I don't even own a car, I figured out they were money sinks at age 18.

If I want to impress people, I show them what I do for a hobby.

    • +7

hehe, my fiance is at westpac in HR… hope you weren't talking to her!

      haha

      • he he he

      • I am guessing she was in your MBA course.

        • Nah, no MBA for her

    • I hope you really do have the connection and actions will be taken. Keep me posted.

      • Just PM geoffs87's for his fiance name and buy her a coffee on your first day at work ad you've got your connection / step up the ladder compare with all the other new grads. Much cheaper than a 80k car.

  • +8

    VL turbo

  • Don't have advice but good on you for having 80K saved up/earned from stocks/bonds at 21 of all ages.

    • +10

He has obviously made the right choice by putting his partying onhold

I didn't neg, but do you really believe the whole $80k has been from working/scrimping/saving?

      Either:
      1) The money (and part of it is from shares etc as OP mentioned) was from inheritance/gifted
      2) OP worked, however everything else to do with expenditure was covered by mum n dad.

The way OP is 'blowing' $80k doesn't come across as someone that has actually worked hard for the cash. It comes across as entitled.

      • +1

I didn't neg, but do you really believe the whole $80k has been from working/scrimping/saving?

        Thanks.

I have no idea where op got the funds from, and it's none of my business to know.

I just find it sad that there are so many posters resulting to personal attacks and name calling. Some posters seems to take op's choice to spend this much on a vehicle personally. It's only money after all.

      • +2

Come on man, he's been working for 15 years now!

    • +2

Clearly been watching to many wall street movies. How about invest that $80,000 and double it, then go out and by an $80,000 car. Dropping your savings on a car is stupid, because tomorrow you may be out of a job, and then you got nothing except your new car, which will be worth $60,000.

  • If you're looking for a good looking vehicle that kills performance figures while making you look like daddy's favourite child fresh off uni then:

    S3 Sedan New
Used C63 2012 (you'll find them just under 80k, aim for under 50k km)
    S5 2013
    CLA45 2013
CLS63 2011 (Your pockets will need to be 30% deeper for this)

If you're going for the conservative 'my dad will sue you' look then:

    A6 2014+ (make sure it's V6 3.0 petrol not diesel)
    BMW 528i 2014+
    C350 New

  • Why are you looking at buying new? As soon as you drive out you lose 20% of the value? Just buy an equivalent 2 year old car, you may even get a better model for the same price.

  • Wow how can you afford an $80k car if you haven't even started working yet? Financing? Honestly buying a depreciating expensive to service car on financing is not a good idea. You will love the car at first but will get over it very fast when it costs you a fortune.

Or option 2, is your family paying for the car? In which case go buy a nice car and stop bragging on Ozbargain!

    • +2

      Novated lease is my bet.

  • +3

Given you'd be lucky to even be earning $63k after tax in that position and an $80k car will lose roughly 30% of its value in the first year - you've effectively reduced your after tax salary to $39k. Let that sink in for a second.

Also, no grads drive to work so you're not going to be impressing anyone there. If you did drive you'd almost certainly be considered a monumental (profanity) anyway, which despite what people think about finance professionals isn't going to improve your career progression.

Source: Ex-finance grad who still takes public transport, as do almost all of my colleagues.

  • Infiniti Q60 Coupe

  • +2

As a young investment analyst, no one is going to be impressed your car. Build up a portfolio of your own appreciating assets, and watch your career boom.
Cars are a stupid investment, everyone in the industry knows it…
5-6 years of experience as an A grade analyst, different story.

  • +1

Typical ozbargain hate unfortunately - I like many would never buy a car like that at your age but thats neither here nor there. out of curiosity though, what nationality are you and how are you buying the car (lease/cash/loan/family money)?
RE the car, i'd personally go a 2-3 year old one that has lost 30% of its value. Probably a C-Class, or maybe a 4-series. I dont know what people ever get SUV's unless you have young kids, or need a 4wd from towing/camping.

  • +3

Sorry, which uni do you go to that teaches you a car is an investment with high yield?

  • +5

You seem like an intelligent fellow. 80s style materialism hasn't gone out of fashion after all. People will be impressed with your car and it will make you feel better. Hence I suggest this car http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/DeLorean-DMC-12-1… the rest of your money should be spent on Coca Cola and ladies. This investment combination will bring maximum returns.

  • +1

Personally, I wouldn't be ranking a car by LOOKS first. The best looking cars can often be real dogs (I'm looking at YOU, HOLDEN!).

As a Financial Planner, I would have thought you would be going for reliability and cost effectiveness first, so I strongly suggest a Prius. Will cost you less than half any other standard car in fuel costs, and it's also much cheaper on tyres and maintenance (the engine lasts longer due to being supported by the electric system).

If you want something that will actually appreciate in value, get a Tesla or a Mustang.

    • +2

Holden…best looking cars?? You on crack? Nissan Pulsar SSS all the way, brah!

    • +2

I own a tesla. Can you tell me how it's an appreciating asset? Lol

    AMG A-45.

    DO it.

My mate around the same age as me bought a brand new SSV-redline v8 Holden ute about 2 years out of school on an apprentice wage.

Few years later, after moving in with his GF, breaking up with her and not being able to afford the Debt of his car, and Apartment Rent fee Solo, he traded in his Prized possession for a much much cheaper greatwall ute, and moved back home.

He has since got back out into his own place but I still hear him complain about the good 35K debt he has for a 17,000$ car.

Meanwhile, I just bought my first apartment, and about 5 years ago I bought a very affordable sensible car with low KS for 17K, and still runs like a dream, which I have paid off. I can tell you he is very Jelous.

But all this means F all - people only learn from there own mistakes so if your gonna go, go big and get dat dream AMG-a45 ;)

If you really want to impress your work buddies, just buy a nice, sensible GOLF or something.
Something that says "I like nice german Yuppy cars, but im not a total idiot wasting 2 years wage on a car"

This is like the stereotypical guy who goes out and buys a big shiny Rolex and wants everyone to look at it…when really everyone he meets thinks he's a massive d*ckhead

I'll point out that perhaps you want something that shows a modicum of taste/class? If you've got money to burn like that, go and find a great classic car and spend a bit on the servicing or restoration. I'm not much of a car guy but off the top of my head go grab on old Porsche 911, and old-school 240Z, or some kind of convertible like a Mustang or even an MG. Those are just awesome cars, and people will really take notice. Less relevant nowadays because of Bond, but its like people buying a Ferrari vs an Aston Martin - one shows that you have some discerning taste, and the other one means you have a tiny penis

Hell, you might actually end with a slightly appreciating asset, or least not be losing money hand over fist

    • The only thing gleaned from your Ferrari/Aston Martin taste/dick size dichotomy besides not having a clue re cars is that you most likely don't have that discerning gentleman's taste you think you do.

A bit of trivia edit: The front of the classic mustang you speak off was inspired by the Ferrari look. The designer of the Mustang said it himself.

      • +1

We appear to have a Rolex owner here…

I did say I don't really know a lot about cars, that was just off the top of my head, so if you have one besides the Snark Wagon please go ahead. Hell, I drive a 2003 hatchback around

The point I'm trying to make is that there are Rich/Fancy cars, and there are Tasteful Fancy cars.

I realise convertibles are like the ultimate tiny penis car but he's young so it doesn't look quite so midlife crisis-y

Cool trivia, I actually do like that fact

        • +2

Maybe this is the best way to look at it: what are you trying to ACHIEVE?

If you want a car to impress your bosses, sorry they already have better cars or they aren't into that sort of thing

If you want to impress girls, you're into the wrong kind of girls

If you want to impress people generally, Australians don't like tall poppies. As evidenced by this thread. So you buy something that people find subtly cool and they respect you for it

        • Actually I will concede I do know what you're trying to say, the internet just makes arguments become so contrived haha. I don't own a Rolex and I drive a 1996 Toyota but I also restore and own classic cars. Besides, a person that is all about buying an Aston Martin or a Ferrari for conspicuous consumption wouldn't be caught dead wearing a cheap and tacky Rolex. They're probably rocking an actual big and shiny joint that screams bank like a Patek.

        • @jellykingdom: You included ALL AUSTRALIANS with such a small sample size. Surely i need some advice from someone who has a dispute on parking ticket.

        • @chickensaltfrie: im not sure what disputing a parking ticket has to do with anything…? That doesn't mean I have bad taste, just bad eyesight lol

        • -2

@jellykingdom: It means you have nothing else to worry about and your time isn't expensive.

        • @chickensaltfrie: I figure it was a worth a 15min email

I'm paid about $120k per year, so roughly $60/hr i work. Ticket was essentially worth 2hrs of my time…or as you might call it, a worthwhile investment?

        • @chickensaltfrie: If you're referring to my sample size re "tall poppies" and disputing that claim, clearly you ain't from around here

  • +27

Okay, you have some problems here.

    1. Average salary of Investment Analyst for the first few years is 60,000k with your HECS debt repayments you will take home about $1740 per fortnight - I'm in a similar situation so I know this will be about right, that's not much money.

    2. Because you're 21 you won't have the money in cash so a loan it is. First loan not unreasonable to get 10% interest. 85,000 loan over 4 years and you're at almost $1000 a fortnight. Ouch.

    3. Comprehensive car insurance for that type of car for a 21yo male paid fortnightly - Another $400.

    4. Petrol at $100 per week for premium, rego and CTP rego ($1300 PA) and let's set aside $2,000 a year for service and maintenance.

So out of your $1740 of pay, you will be spending $ 1720 to afford this car. Better hope you don't get a speeding fine…

    • The OP could reduce his loan repayments considerably by taking a loan with a large balloon payment. The OP could assume he will earn $100k+ in four years time and easily pay the balloon, but it's likely he won't. If the OP would take a large balloon loan then I'd be praying he's not managing my superannuation account…

    • +1

You know everything about my financial situation. How'd you do that?

      • +5

Making financial assumptions based on available market data. Something you think a so called "Investment Analyst" would already know?

        • Those are personal information. Such as HECS debt. It has nothing to do with the market.

        • +2

@chickensaltfrie: lol almost all domestic students have HECS debts. It's not like you're the only one with one

        • @niggard: Because i don't.

        • +2

@chickensaltfrie: awesome, another person without a HECS debt! I was wondering if I'd ever see this day. My parents paid my fees for me ;)

    • alright, now the Bulge Bracket all wants you.

  • BMW 428i coupe - Get a Merc when ur older..

  • +6

Here's a tip for next time: leave out the extra useless information like your age, uni/job status etc. It doesn't really do anything but give people a reason to flame you.

At $80k, get an Audi S3. It's marketed to younger buyers, it's fancy enough, and it's fast.

    • And that is why i left my age. So people know i am a younger buyer, i swear if i didn't include that, some warriors will flame me for not leaving enough information. Anyway, the S3 does occupy a spot in my top list. Thanks for the input! If i do decide to go with Audi, i think at least a 15% off RRP is reasonable?

      • -1

You could buy demo models or lightly used ones for 70k.problem with those is that you won't get some options that you want. 15 percent from rrp is a tall order. Between 5 and 10 is more likely.

        • I think there was a deal posted that had 15% off RRP, even though it expired I think it's still achievable. Or at least have to try.

  • -3

If i have $80k to spend on a car i will never buy anything other than HSV MALOO LSA! Dreaming about it everyday but sadly cant afford one(I can get a loan but i would rather spend it on beers).

    • +1

Patriotism aside…what's so great about Holden?

  • +1

If you wanted a SUV-ish car, try a Audi Q3. should meet the requirements.

I agreed with shiny1 - leave out your age and so on.You just give people the reason to flame; of course unless you intended to get this kind of reaction.

To all, OP intention probably isn't to be flamed. the 80K may rightly comes from his mom or dad, or he might have earned those money by himself over uni. He wanted to spend it, let it be. Even if he saves it, it won't helps anyone here. ;)
