Buy a bicycle. The Aurumania Crystal Edition Gold Bike should ought to do it. Get some exercise, don't pollute AND impress with the bling you obviously desire.

  • +2

Why buy a 80k car after uni, you should have just asked your parents for it during uni, use the excuse makes travel easier.

  • Lucky I'm not with west pack

  • I think spending that kind of cash on a car would be a bad investment.

  • I think for that price it's best to buy a 1-2yr old car unless you are buying it in a rollover scheme. You should find out what arrangements your company has made for fleet vehicles you may be able to snag a great deal that way.

  • +3

If you really want to exude luxury, use your $80k to buy a richard mille and a used corolla.

$80k for a watch is far more exclusive than $80k for a car

  • Why not get your girlfriend a CRV then a $300k watch after… Then marry her…

    Great investment that is…

    • This girl casually wearing a Richard Mille on her wrist.

You can get a RM starting at around 80k AUD. No need to spend 300k.

mate you're on the wrong forum ask the question on skylinesaustralia.com.au or some other car forum! these tightaxxx wont know anything about cars

  • +18

Going to be an "Investment Analyst" —> wants to drop $80k on a depreciating asset.

    Everyone short Westpac pls

  • +5

I did what you are about to do. It wasn't very smart. Mum drives the car now.

You are early 20s and just starting out in a job.
I was late 20s, had saved up $2million and built my own business.

I wouldn't repeat it again for me. I definitely wouldn't recommend it for you.

Save your money and invest it.

Did you personally earn the $80k?

  • +1

I have had a think about this for you and I have come up with a solution. It might not quite fill your criteria, but people will know you mean business when you say 'I drive a VN Commodore.'
People tend to liken it to a boat rather than an automobile going by its looks and handling but it has 4 wheels.. (they're steelies as well so you don't have to worry about chucking maddd skids.) It also has a fat chunk of metal at the front called a Buick 3800 V6. People complain about the weight of the thing but if it were any lighter the car would pull wheelies at 2/3 throttle with the amount of power it makes.
    Here's a good example- http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Holden-Commodore-….
You'll still have $78,000 left. Don't be afraid to buy a spoiler and some hectic racing seats but remember- this thing will pull a massive single wheel peel at any opportunity. Save some money for bailing it out of the impound after the cops inevitably catch you hooning.

I had a VL turbo, and used to leave mad black straps on the ground. Only milk and juice come in 2 Litres aye!

      • did it have an open diff??

        • Open Diff all the way! My gf would have dumped me if she saw me doing one wheelers with an LSD. Open diff way more dangerous hahah

Don't listen to haters; they are just jealous of you winning your life. At $80k I would reckon you to test drive:

    Euro:
    1) Audi s3- http://www.carsales.com.au/demo/details/Audi-S3-2016/OAG-AD-…
    2) This gorgeous animal- http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Mercedes-Benz-C63… (negotiate, and you might have it for 90k)
    3) Beast- http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/BMW-M3-2011/OAG-AD…
    4) If you can't handle power but euro?- http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Volvo-S60-2015/SS…

    JDM:
    1) Car guy? Manual? Here is your pill- http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/Subaru-WRX-2016/OA…
    2) Can't control power but still want fun? Well here is the way to keep smiling for life- http://www.carsales.com.au/bncis/details/Mazda-MX-5-2016/OAG…
    3) Just if you want comfort in JDM- http://www.carsales.com.au/bncis/details/Hyundai-Genesis-201…
    4) If you think of breaking up in nearby future then look for 2006 bugged eye version of Impreza Wrx /Sti or s2000 because summer is near.

    • -4

Thanks for you input. Sorry to see you getting neg for actually answer my question without judgement like you know my life inside out.

    • Have a + for joining the non jealous club :-)

  • Range Rover Evoque HSE
Take it for a test drive and you are sure to buy one
Styling in a different league as that's is your priority

I have considered GLC and Evoque when I was in the market 6 months ago. But chose the Evoque because of its unique looks and not to mention Evoque definitely feels up market inside out compared to the GLC

    • -2

Evoque YES! It was one of my top choices, until the GLC Coupe.

      • You need to look at the interior of a GLC and an Evoque

I test drove both and purely on the interior alone the GLC is far behind. Does not feel premium at all compared to the rangie

        • -1

You must be lucky, GLC coupe is not even available yet at my local dealer.

        • @chickensaltfrie: I said GLC and not the GLC coupe. Don't think the interiors will be any different

  • +18

ask mummy and daddy, they are paying

    • -6

      Are you jealous?

      • +1

nope because im not an attention seeker

  • +1

I think OP is telling some porky pies!

OP must feel good about himself posting this as a forum post.

  • +1

This has gotta be a troll post… if it's not then OP goodluck.

  • +2

Mercedes Benz - the South African poverty pack class editions are pretty good for $80K.

Audi is a good image option too. They're the cheapest and bought by people that want to pretend they're rich but they're not fooling anyone. Kind of like the BMW 316i.

Out of curiosity…Are you going to be in the team focussing on a Westpac ACIT (Appreciating Car Investment Trust) index? You sound like a leader amongst the other finance peons.

    • -3

Audi's are not cheap. They are on par with mercs and BMW.
Sometimes,It costs more than a similar sized bimmer or a merc. Get your facts right

      • The fact is Audi is the quintessential poor man's posh car

  • +3

New car an investment? With high yield?

    Can't tell if serious?
    Hysterical thread.

  • +7

Hey guys, do you all think this kid has the ability to single handedly effect the westpace share price? Given the number of people talk off pulling out their investments from westpace it would be a fun excercise to think what would happen if his new employer saw this post.

    Food for thought.

    • -2

It's a no brainer. Pulling out investments is not as easy as you think. How can you trust anything anyone has said behind their keyboard. If any of them is legit and do decide to pull out, it will be our new office joke - over a thread on the internet, and thanks for all different kinds of fee and costs.

There is only one answer ever to the question, "What car should I buy?" It is, FOG, Falcon on Gas. Thus the Whirlpool gods have spoken, thus it shall always be.

    • But this isn't whirlpool. It's oZbargain

      • +1

        Whirlpool gods > ozBargain gods

  • +1

Sounds like you'll want to upgrade this a fair bit. Most outright purchases are only beneficial if you keep the car 5+ years.
Have you considered just doing an pure lease?

Considered getting a Tesla? You get the image you want plus the enviro, forward thinking cred…

By the way, I wanted a fancy car leaving school… never quite got there though and now I drive a 5yo i30. But I'm still in the top 2% ;-)

    • -2

I have really very limited knowledge on Tesla, but i do consider once someone could provide some information - the whole purpose of this thread.

  • Hi,

Perhaps you should not tell everyone your age if you want to know what car to buy. Make people focus on the question and not how 80k sounds so crazy on a bargain website. Asking how to buy a car for less would be a more ideal question. :)

    • But first, i have to decide which car to get.. Revealing age so people can assume i do not wish to purchase a car such as the E class.

      • I have driven quite a few BMWs and would easily prefer to roll around in a 5 or 7 series over any sportier looking thing. I am 22, bigger cars are not necessarily old people cars.

        • I don't think E class is bigger than GLC, it wasn't the size .

  • +1

(profanity) it, sell your kidney and bit of liver in Black market, take a loan, put your folks as security and buy a Bugatti Veyron. YOLO!! And you only get to be 21 once!!

  • +3

I'm an investment analyst too. Damn I feel poor compared to OP.

      • +9

        Comparing yourself to MJ, haha.
        Egotistical much?

You're new in the job market right now mate.

  • Why can't people just answer op's question straight rather than giving financial advice.

I'm pretty sure he is aware that it is a depreciating asset and sometimes that things you want can be pricey.

    • +2

Exactly. Finally someone that… wait, did you answer him?

      • -1

        Yes i did

  • +4

@chickensaltfrie read this mate, it might help you out: http://www.news.com.au/finance/work/at-work/these-four-words…

  • If you had spent Rs 55,000 to buy a Royal Enfield motorcycle in 2001, you would now have an old, rugged bike. But if you had invested the same Rs 55,000 in shares (at Rs 17.50 per share) of Eicher Motors, the company that makes Enfield bikes, your investment will be worth Rs 4.75 crore now.

After reading to OPs views, I am so not going to westpac for investment advice.

    • Or if you just eat and use the minimum that could keep you alive, and invest the extra dollars in the market and reach its full potential. I like how people just assume investments always make money. You suddenly become a god and know exactly which share will profit.

      • You always think extreme, don't you?

  • +1

Kids these days haha don't worry i was like that when i was 21 and dumb. Give it 5 years and you will regret any money you didn't spend on holidays or savings. Go buy a 2014 mercedes for half the price and the same amount of fun no one needs a "new" car

  • +1

I vote for Hyundai Genesis… cheaper price but still a luxurious car

  • Uni graduate soon (21), will be entering Westpac as an Investment Analyst.

If this one line was just omitted in the beginning of the post the outcome of the replies would have been so much different. Now everybody is just judging rather than giving recommendation of 80K car.

    • -5

I hope people feel good about themselves after telling a ''kid'' who might be having a better life than them to how to live my life.

  • +8

only a moron would go buy an 80k car fresh out of uni, what if you lose your job?

Maybe if you work and earn that amount of money, then its ok, but sounds stupid to spend that much on car at 21, and i can see your only looking at it as a status car, save some money go buy an audi a4 , not a personal favorite in car selection, yet it looks nice.

Personally i would not use you as my Investment Analyst.

    • -8

You won't get the chance to use me anyway.

  • +1

Will give the best advice I can, having recently bought my first euro GT sports car.

Whatever you buy, you should have AT LEAST half the value in cash today. Why? The concept of spending money before you've earned it is a psychological trap, which leads to financial problems down the line. There will always be a faster and newer car around the corner, and you will keep forgoing chances to build equity in order to feed desires.

Having a balance between consumption today and consumption tomorrow is a very important thing. Successful people are able to master delayed gratification. Unsuccessful people fall into the trap of spending today and lock themselves out of future spending.

Again, have some money in your pocket before going out and buying anything. This gives you alot of power in negotiation. Let the dealers work hard for your money. This way you will get the most bang for your buck if you are true Ozbargainer.

I would also start at a lower price point and work up - $40k and look at what you get for your money in both the used and new market. The ability to turn heads is correlated but doesn't always depend on the price of car! Make sure you can incrementally justify the additional expenditure for features/prestige. This also gives you power and anchor points in your negotiation.

    • -1

If you read what i commented, i have the money. I like working on high leverage and play with risk. After, i can take the consequence of my decision.

  • looking at this post I am convinced the standard of english comprehension amongst ozbargainers is poor. All the op asked was "Looking to Buy a Brand New Car (~ $80,000) - Recommendations?". The responses provided range from how what, where, how and why but not actually answering the question. Can I ask that posters just answer the question and leave the morality and financial advice for another post? Oh and learn how to comprehend english.

    BMW M140i

    • +2

In that case then the op should've just said he was looking to buy a new car ~$80,000, he worded it saying he is 21 straight out of uni and landed an investment analyst job with westpac, he could've easily just left his preference of cars and his budget in the title but went out of his way to describe what position he is in, practically insinuating that he just 21 years old and landed a job at westpac when most uni graduates struggle to get a part time job.

What does telling us that he is an investment analyst at westpac going to help us decide what car to pick for him? Other then to boast about his position.

      • -1

More information means better decision making. No information is irrelevant. By stating i am 21, it makes people not to recommend cars like the E class.

        • +8

By stating i am 21, it makes people not to recommend cars like the E class.

Yes, indeed. I'm going to recommend a 24 seater bus instead, because 21yos like to party.

        • -1

@Ughhh: Based on what you just commented. High possibility you'll do that.

        • +1

          @chickensaltfrie:

High possibility that I'll recommend a bus? Damn right.

All your work colleagues will hang out with you and your party bus. It'll be like the cool kid who owned a playstation 1 when it came out.

Also, because looks are important, don't forget to add a spoiler to the bus. Maybe fancy lights and stickers to. Everyone likes stickers.

        • +2

@Ughhh: You should work in marketing.

    • welcome to the internet

  • +10

I will not seek any Investment advice from WESTPAC anymore. I can see the quality of Investment analyst they are hiring.

    • Sorry, i don't provide individual advice either. Form a company and we can talk.

      • +1

Do I look like an Idiot to seek an advice from you ?

    • +1

Every company has its fair share of intelligent individuals and straight up dumbasses.

Assuming you're employed, I'd go out on a limb here and put you in the latter category.

  • +7

This post is absolute garbage. Pure troll from a high school student who just finished his HSC.

    • +1

      it has to be

    • -5

      You're a psychic.

  • +2

Lease a Tesla. Model S or X doens't matter, you'll have a car with better performance than anything else you'd be able to afford.
    Smartest Idea by far.

  • +3

    To OP:

Even though this is not in any relation to what you are asking, I suggest that you have a read about a few life lessons in your 20s.

Once you hit 30, have a read about life lessons to excel in your 30s.

There is a lot of valuable information in the 2 articles, especially with life lessons in your 30s.

There were a few previous threads where the links would be useful and being a long time visitor, I rarely log into my account.

    • Appreciate it.

    • +2

Thanks for logging in and sharing, an important post.

  • +3

Hi OP. I am 23 Years Old. Is this some kind of joke?

I was like you once. Decided to spend 80K on a car.

But realised that was too little.

I suggest you close this thread to you have some real cash (Approx 200k) and then I can suggest you REAL CARs. /Thread

    Ended up with a BMW M4. /s

    • -3

''I think you are on the wrong site''. 200K for a ''REAL CAR'', this is OzBargain please.

    • Some people like could argue $200k won't get you a "real" car anyway. It'll be a half assed attempt at a sports saloon wannabe sports car like M4 and C63's are. Real cars start at $550k!

  • +1

In spite of your uni education and job as an analyst at Westpac, you can't (or don't want to) research and analyse your options for the first 'luxury car?'

    • +1

What makes you think he's not researching? He's getting opinions. Isn't that research?

      • Thank you.

      • -1

        What he said:

        Priority in decending order LOOK>Quality>Comfort>Performance>Technology>Resell>Safety

        Currently considering MB GLC Coupe>C class coupe> CLA/ AudiS3.

Look at the relative weighting of his criteria. His contradictory shortlist ordered three sedate quasi-luxury German vehicles that many view as something only financially prepared retirees and kids from wealthy families would drive. Furthermore, there is not even a Lexus, which would be a very strong contender here, given his priorities and limited budget.

As for getting opinions, it could certainly be a part of research. However, what sort of opinions and advices is he receiving here? Would you, in your right mind, do the same?

        This fiasco, research?

        No.

        • +1

Are you feeling cut because Lexus didn't make the shortlist?

You must be a Lexus owner.

        • @Cwong14u: lol
          Lexus
          Lolexus

        • @Cwong14u:

          S600, actually.

        • +1

what's s600? Is that the latest mobile phone from samsung?
