          @lyl: Haha well looks like I got u huh??!?1!?1!

Haha honestly no hard feelings mate, I think an earlier commenter put it aptly when he said that this post has morphed from a deal post to a (very poor) dialogue - and it appears, disconnect - between mods, posters/sellers, and users.

All aside your efforts are genuinely appreciated. Enjoy your week.

  • +6

    Low quantity and baiting

  • +7

Gearbest employ shady business practices, twice I ordered a product that never arrived, they offered to resend at 50% of original price, no thanks. Had to raise a paypal dispute before getting my money back. Items clearly never sent, was told goods left at one point, then told the colour I ordered wasn't in stock, then told they were sent but had\ no proof of dispatch. Left a bad review on a website, which had 1 star average, all of a sudden months later they have over 4 star average after hundreds of obviously faked 5 star "verified" reviews.

    • -1

Have you ever contacted Sunny (Gearbest Rep) for that ?

      • +4

Wait wait wait, so if one rises a matter directly with GB they can expect to be stuffed around, but if you belong to a community like OzBargain where savvy buyers have the ability to adversely impact their custom, all of a sudden a Sunny will be funny for the money?

        • +1

.. where savvy buyers have the ability to adversely impact their custom ..

          Marketing 101

        • +1

          Jeez that's pretty crappy.

Going through the correct channels via the website or your account = no response

Throwing a complaint on a tangentially related bargain website = concierge service :|

  • +4

    Baiting and low quantity.

  • +5

Some good quantities, but Id rather see 20 phones with a 15% discount than 1 at $10. It's too much of a competition.

  • +2

Wow, these quantities are just painful to watch

  • I don't mind the phones going cheap rather than a competition because otherwise someone who doesn't really want might end up with one

  • +2

This deal is bullshit. Total load of shit.

  • No mention of timezone? Is that 12pm in Sydney? Brisbane? Perth? or?

    • +1

      AEDT

      in the table.

      • Thanks. Read through that wall of text 3 times, and looked IN the table. Didn't notice/think to look for it in the header.

        • No worries, added a bold piece in the main body stating a method and that it's AEDT. Hopefully that's clear.

  • +2

    how entitled are we eh?

    • Entitled? OzB are making money from referral links on this very deal. If we're going to be exploited at least don't feed us clickbait shit.

      • +4

Sorry, what? Please elaborate on what referral links are in this deal? Also, please elaborate on what OzB have to do with Gearbest deal posts?

        • +1

In earlier comments somebody mentioned that affiliate links are being used in this post (they are) for non-logged in users. I.e - someone at OzB is making presumably a margin on any click through sales. This is why I suggested that there is a conflict here. There is a (potential) motive to heavily moderate neg votes as the money stream (commission) only exists while a front page deal exists.

Log out or go incognito, return to deal, click "go to deal". Allow page to load, then look at URL. You'll note it's a "commissionfactory" referrer.

        • +4

          @jackary:

I know there is an affiliate tracking code added to the primary URL only, but no referral codes anywhere. This is common knowledge and has never been hidden from the community, so please don't pretend like it's a big surprise.

Also, since it is the primary URL only, any clicks through to the product specific pages will not generate any affiliate income for OzBargain. If we were manipulating this to favour our income stream, would we not force Gearbest to host these deals on a single page on their site, so we can gather affiliate income for every sale on every click?

It simply doesn't make sense that this is being used from a negative aspect. OzBargain requires thousands and thousands of dollars a year to survive, and with the increase of ad blockers, additional streams must be sought. This does not mean compromising on core values, and as I mentioned earlier, this has never been hidden in any way.

        • @Shaw: Neil's earlier comment:

If you try going to any of the deals in the link above (incognito mode or log out), it seems it is going through Commission Factory.

In either case whether it's 1 link or all, the principle is the same. I've been here for 4 years and I can put my hand on heart and say I didn't know. If you can point me to any other part of the site where the use of affiliate links is openly referred to other than the FAQ (which I have read yet still didn't notice) than I'll delightfully apologise and retract my sentiment.

We agree to disagree honestly I don't care. I'm not getting a slice of the proverbial pie so I'm not interested (nor is there much point) arguing this further. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

        • @lyl: Oh god, now we're whipping out the stylus for screenshots.

          Take a bloody day off!

        • @jackary:

If you can point me to any other part of the site where the use of affiliate links is openly referred to other than the FAQ (which I have read yet still didn't notice) than I'll delightfully apologise and retract my sentiment.

          :)

        • @lyl: Ya got me!!

        • +1

          @jackary:

No problem. Scotty openly refers to it here, hereand it's also referred to here. Those are just 3 examples I could find, but it has never been a secret.

If you do have any concerns or questions about how things work or why they are the way they are, feel free to TWAM or flick me a PM. At the end of the day, the management of this site are being accused pretty heavily of some shady business, but there is nothing being hidden, and users are welcome to request more information, as some have done.

        • @jackary:

          Yup!!

        • @Shaw: Thanks. I'll be sure to be more observant in future and of course I delightfully apologise!

I think some of the accusations are fair to level but I don't expect you to agree nor do I expect to find an agreeable mid point. It's proven futile thus far.

I respectfully decline your offer but thank you for it again.

        • +1

@Shaw: IMHO management are missing the main point here and focusing on the words typed rather than the implication or motivation of the comments.

It is far more important to ponder why multiple posters have felt compelled to even consider "is there a kickback and that's why this deal is being defended in so many individual replies?"

Sometimes the substance of a message is not in the content.

        • +1

          @havebeerbelywillsumo:

I'm interested in your point of view, but I don't understand exactly the point you are trying to get across. Care to elaborate?

        • +2

@Shaw: No worries, I am saying that, * to me * there appears to be a disconnect between the community and management over the * current * aims of the site. Whether this apparent disconnect is right/wrong/justified IMHO is not the point for management to focus on but replies defending rules (no matter how correct the reply is) in a significant number indicate * to me * that management feel they need to state and restate and restate that rules have technically not been breached ie management is focused on "the community has the wrong idea of the rules, we need to make sure they understand this deal is not in breach".

To me however the "payback" accusations are an oblique way of saying "I really want to trust this site to operate without fear or favour and have not thought otherwise but actions today have me concerned that this is not the case, why does the handling of this particular deal cause me such unease."

IMHO no-one wants to question trusting something of value and will find excuses to postpone thought on the subject yet here members have overcome that natural reluctance. Once overcome it is far easier to begin the shift from trust then to query then to suspect and finally to distrust if future events perceived as puzzling arise.

        • +3

          @havebeerbelywillsumo:

If mods/Scotty cared about commission from sites like GearBest, wouldn't they prefer to increase their posting ability, rather than set them the same posting cap as is already in place for all reps?

The accusations getting thrown around are just plain ridiculous.

A post for a bunch of cheap crap, with the unfortunate small number of cheap good things, has turned into a witch hunt on Scotty and the mod team which is just a load of shit.

OzBargain's anniversary was meant to be a good thing, not to have a whinge at the creator of the very site you now take advantage of.

Step away from the keyboard, you're putting blame in the wrong place.

        • +1

@Spackbace: Just to clarify, I am not saying the ops took a kickback, the thought never crossed my mind nor as far as I can see on a reread did I say that, it is unfortunate if you read that into the post above. However that thought has come to others and I am speculating as to what that implies and why it might have happened.

I do continue to feel this deal borders on clickbait and is not in the spirit of Ozbargain as I have from the first albeit that it does not break the deal posting rules.

        • @havebeerbelywillsumo: it's a bit unfortunate that this has become a witch hunt, I thought the community was stronger than that!

  • +3

    A $320 phone for $10 with qty of 1.

You want a free stress test of your servers?

  • +17

First of all, I love this community. It has certainly evolved and changed over the years, but my support for you guys who run this website as well as the regular posters and commenters have my absolute support and respect.

My honest opinion is that some of these items (<10 qty) being advertised as here are certainly closer to being a competition rather than a "deal"; In fact, it is being sold almost like loss-leader in this case.

Is embedding a competition within a deal an acceptable method within community/representative posting guidelines?

Obviously, Gearbest is trying to generate some goodwill from this platform (especially after their atrocious history) with this celebratory event and that is something that benefits everyone and is generally a good thing for the community. However, for THIS bargain-savvy group of people, I feel like it would have been much more tasteful to SEPARATE the deals from the competition without creating all this fuss.

I think the admins really should have a thorough discussion and maybe come up with a better guideline that people can be more agreable with; and to be really honest, I'm quite disappointed by comments like this from Scotty himself. I really hope you guys have a good think about these issues before making knee-jerk reactions to people's feedback (of course there are some plenty very unreasonable ones too!)

Let's face it. No one really enjoyed those silly COTD races back in the day; and I don't think people are going to react all that well tomorrow either.

    Cheers,
    CheapCoffee

    • +4

Actually wish they provided a generic code that applies % site wide than cherry picking products.

    • +1

      Well said

    • +1

Thankyou, someone that doesn't sheeple vote but gives a very thoughtful and thought provoking comment :)

    • +1

Well said, I also believe the guidelines need to be revised as the OzB community has grown over the years, our consumption as outgrown the supply of small quantity.

When there is genuinely a good deal most people will miss it as they don't have all day clicking on refresh. but this is a deal that's created in advance for the benefit of the community if some real thought has been put through it, the admins should advise and recommend GB team to offer good deals to majority of the community rather than making it a competition.

If competition is what they intended then put in the comps section.

On the topic of Scotty's reply, if you are earning an income for this business, you are technically providing a service and that's really no way to talk to a customer.

  • +2

I ordered from them once it got lost. Then got it replaced it got lost. The Third time ordered and now ,have totally forgot about my order. Bite me three times…(I am considerate…)

  • +3

I'm gonna refrain from voting but the way I see it is that if COTD deals are allowed then this should also be allowed. There is literally no difference between the two. Both are borderline click baiting with minimal quantities.

  • +2

Have to neg as I'm sure someone will end up paying full price for a phone accidently after the coupon code has already been used.

  • -2

Its the 21st mate, where are the coupons ?

    • Rep isn't online yet, it's about 0630 over there. Event doesn't start for a few hours.

    • The coupons are going to be released as per the times above I assume.

  • Is this the only retailer that post their bargains?

      • Yeah I saw those list, but I didn't see any other retailers put up a list like GearBest.

        • Ahh yea, not sure. Should be more posts coming, not sure what will be in them though.

        • Scroll down on that page

  • +2

The flashlights don't come with batteries, so it's $10 + $25 to buy a working flashlight.

  • +2

I wonder how many of these Neggers will still try and snag some of the items.. I'm guessing a bunch.

  • The raspberry pi's that are listed are on backorder…. is that allowed?

You're only offering 20 but if that means a month or more wait, what's the point?

  • 1/2 hour to go………..where are the codes please?

  • -1

I bet bots will get this deal, refresh and auto buy within seconds

    • +3

Love how you negged it but clearly are trying to grab a bargain.. should you really have negged it?

      • +1

Lol love how I was downvoted for no reason. I already told my reason in another post.

  • this will load test the ozb servers nicely..Sites already started to run a little slow

  • what are people gonna try to win? pretty much everything is already or should already be $10

    • +1

It's the quantity 1 items, which are worth much more than $10. A few of the other ones are also $50~100 for the stuff with more quantity which also is pretty good too.

      • yeah but the camera for example is up now for $17

      • and goodluck to whoever wins the items with only 1. i wont be surprised if the gearbest site crashes

    • +2

I will try to buy Rpi 3. I hope I can get one.
it will be a waste of time to try to get 1pcs items. The website already slow.

      • +3

The code applied for me but by the time I got to check out the price went back up to $49. What a joke

        • Same happened to me.

        • +1

same here! Thank god I noticed that before clicking "place order".

They should make it if it's already applied the price won't change. totally unprofessional

  • +1

Is this bringing OzBargain down? Very slow…

  • +1

    Codes not working…..

  • +3

    Dear ozbargainers,

    Codes are updated now!

  • +1

    Dear ozbargainers,

    Codes are updated now!

    • +1

you should feel bad for this

  • NOT SURE IF MY NET SPEED OR TOO MANY OZBARGAINHEADS all refreshing browsers at the same time

  • yes! got one ofthe tv boxes

  • +4

Lol wtf Raspberry Pis gone already.

  • +1

    Dear ozbargainers,

    Codes are updated now!

    • +4

      Hi Sunny,

it seems there's alot of Ozbargainers who went through but was still charged the full amount.
Can you update this correctly or do we have to cancel our orders and go through paypal dispute?

      Thanks

      • +2

I got my refund through PayPal in less than 10 minutes through their live chat.

      • @porleng

thanks for that! I might have to go through that.

  • Got a tv box for $13

  • "OzBargain is broken at the moment, and the backend will be restarted "very very soon". "

  • +13

Tried to Purchase the Pi. All paid for within one minute. My confirmation screen says I paid $49.05. Paypal says I paid $61.64.

Well that was great. I love how I need to email GearBest to cancel my order.

    Never again.

This WAS a competition, not a bargain.

    • +1

      Same, over charged me massively.

    • +3

This is an outright and total scam.
You are charged the amount that different to the checkout, without your knowledge.
With the very limited quantities, they ought to know that many are going to fall into the trap of paying full price, with no chance to cancel when the coupons are gone.

    • +2

      same here.
I think we should all do paypal dispute and complain about it.

It's not a deal or not even a competition..
If you call it competition, one wins and pays $10 and gets the item, others shouldn't pay the full price….

Well, it's a lesson learnt, but we are not deserved it.

      Never ever again GEARBASTARD

  • yeah missed out. beaten during paypal checkout process.

  • +2

I dunno the code just didn't seem to work for me at all.

Tried the pi said it applied but when I went to checkout it was trying to charge me full price.

Same goes with the TV box.

  • Thanks for the TV box!

  • +6

So much for "getting to PayPal stage" and having your order locked in… Confirmed order with PayPal, get to final part of checkout, back to full price.

    Pretty frustrating.

    • Same here. Very frustrating.

  • Got a Raspberry Pi. Thanks!

  • +7

no luck at all, The code worked and I was able to check out with PayPal but on the last page it asked to reconfirm the address and phone number. Then the price changed!
Come on! this totally BS and unprofessional

  • +2

Raspberry Pi's were gone in less than a minute

  • +2

    Doesn't even work.

  • +6

Was it just me or did the price increase when the coupon was added? :S

$49aud to $61aud for the Pi.

    • +1

      It wasn't just you.

    • When you apply a coupon (doesn't matter valid or not) it removes any current discounts from this product.
