  • ugh on six figure but got declined. BS!

    • Reason for the decline?

      • +7

        Ozb link

      • it just said declined, we will send you a letter with further details within 5 days. I think its just a generic letter, doubt the 'detail' will be very specific, why

PS. i have other cards maybe thats why?

        • Did it say decline right after you have answered all the required online questions? Or after the 2 days (as stated in their follow up email) after assessing your details..

        • +1

Sometimes it's due to too many CC applications - have you started any but then decided not to?

        • @Shuey: declined instantly

        • did you ask for a specific limit? or did you leave it up to them, usually with the former the card does get declined on occasion.

        • @gaurav1504: selected the lowest on the list - 15k

        • @havok44: I reckon you manually 'override' the limit, instead of letting the system do it for you, it raises some kind of flag. It happened to me while applying to Westpac, so the card team called up to get confirmation before approving it, instead of a system approval.

      Potentially low Credit score

    • +1

I got the same problem with the ANZ 60k deal about a month ago, also 6 figures.
Declined instantly after they ran a Veda check (I get alerts from Veda)

I think it's too many cc applications, I've done quite a few from ozbargain recently.

      • Yeh I've utilised my fair share of ozb deals. Still think it's BS to decline someone who has no defaults

How do you get around it? Pretty crap I have to sit and watch deals I am eligible for go by because I made use of other deals

        • You probly have low cred score which has almost nothing to do with defaults. Veda lows your score quite drastically if you appied for a couple of cc before

        • +1

@Wootwootwoot: curse you Veda. I miss out on 75k points

        • How low so you think your credit score is? I tried amex earlier this year and got declined, so I've stopped applying for credit cards until my credit score improves. No defaults or anything like that.

        • @Wootwootwoot: Does Veda actually give you a 'score' though? I've paid for my credit report and I get alerts when I apply for a rental/cc/phone plan, etc. But they don't give me a number word "Good/Bad". It's just a list of things I've applied for.

        • @idonotknowwhy:

Veda does, this is my Veda dashboard looks like:

          https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/60614/44493/veda.png

        • @divious: Thanks, I didn't know about this dashboard and my subscription had expired.
          I just renewed it.
So I have a "Good" Veda rating of 691, 6 figure salary and got declined.

I was going to change energy providers but I guess I'll stay put for a while.

        • @divious:
Is that a paid subscription on veda.com.au or the free report there? There's also another website mycreditfile.com.au that issues Veda credit file report. Not sure what's the difference there?
          Thanks

        • +1

          @Porco Rosso:

          Paid subscription, $79/year

        • @idonotknowwhy: huhm change energy provider has effect on credit score :-?

        • @kctt: Well I can certainly see it there. I change every time I can get a better rate/discount.

    • Yup just got declined too.

Just spoke to a very rude Indian customer service about this and he was pretty much hanging up on me and wanted to include 'principal' repayment on my loan even when I repeatedly said I am on interest only loan for at least another 5 years and it's loan on investment property.

Only reason I can think of is I have 50K credit card limit now, with about $6,000 due in a few days time which I always pay on time.

    • +1

You do know signing up for these credit deals frequently or constantly transferring to different cards (profanity) your credit score.

      • +1

Interestingly since applying for 4 x FF point CC deals in the last 6 months my veda score has gone up not down which surprised me. :)

        • +1

do you pay minimum every month so that bank rewarded you? that is interesting exeprience

        • @hongd:

No I pay the full closing balance and never pay interest.

  • Has anyone successfully received this offer more than once, e.g close account, wait 12 months and apply again?

I am still in my 12 month waiting period but when I last spoke with anz, they suggested you can only get the offer once?

I know the website does not say this but wanted to check if anyone has gotten it twice within the written rules.

    Thanks

    • +1

Yes and they are very strict on the 12 months wait.

      • Thanks, good to know as I note the terms and conditions states the offer only applies once per eligible customer. Which I find confusing why they have to write this..

  • +4

Booo. Love these deals but I'm not eligible yet. 9 months since I closed my last ANZ QFF Black and its delicious bonus points. Those points helped me land a sweet around-the-world business class trip, I'd easily value them at around $2,000. Also scored 480 Status credits with Virgin Australia, I was re-routed from Oneworld onto Etihad and they must have paid for a full business fare.

Pro tip. When you cancel your card, set a calendar reminder for +12 months time so you can jump on the next offer.

    • How much points for that around the world btw?

      • 280k per person plus approximately $2k in taxes

        • 2k pp taxes ?

        • @Stahh: yea 2k+ per person

        • @illumination: I paid $1,600 in taxes. This included 5 segments with BA, who are usually the worst for taxes.

    • Haha I should've done that, I how have to call up to see when I cancelled my last card.

Applying for credit cards is made ever more tedious by the banks' insistent use of Indian call centres to do the screening, employing people who think they speak English. I've had recent bad experiences with both Westpac and NAB. Let me just say I'm a past the post Platinum candidate with considerable assets, no debt, a six figure income afer tax and a AAA credit rating and with all that with Westpac after a month of pidgin interrogation I just gave up. NAB was little better, more sub-continental jibberish, although I did finally get approval with a letter from God (aka my tax accountant).

    • Yep. I'm in process of refinancing with NAB (that 250k VA FF points offer) and after a month, I'm still waiting for my file to be assessed for approval. No issues with credit rating, assets or income either. It's such a pain.

      • Go elsewhere and email the CEO with your feedback.

        • .. although not the lowest, but the rates given by NAB were fairly competitive (amongst the Big 4 banks). And since I collect VA FF points too, that 250k looks like a good deal.

But I have since escalated the matter with them, so hopefully it'll get approved in the coming weeks.

    • +5

I think that's the problem. You know what you're doing with your financial life and banks don't like that!

    • +1

Get yourself into each bank's system permanently with a savings account or something similar and keep a few bucks in it (only if it's fee-free, of course). Once you're a "customer" they rarely want to re-verify details so CC applications are much smoother.

  • Serious question, but do people just join up to these Credit Card offers, get the FF points/watever the reward is for spending $xxx, and then cancelling the card within the first year to not get the annual fee? No worries about your possible credit rating in the future??

    • As long as you do not have any amount outstanding, why would cancelling and applying for new credit cards be cause for concern?

Edit: Oops, looks like some people may have been rejected for applying for too many credit cards… I wonder if they have balance outstanding ?

      • no. applying for a few credit cards affects your credit rating. To financial institutions, it looks like you are struggling financially hence why you are applying for so many credit cards.

        • I posted above that since applying for 4 x FF point CC deals in the last 6 months my veda score has gone up not down which surprised me. :)

    • +1

I do. Have netted over 300,000 QFF points in the past couple of years by doing this.

In theory only a default, credit rejection or missed bill payments should impact your credit rating. Some companies are also starting to look at the number of enquiries on your credit rating.

If card companies get smarter…. because you've got a history that suggests you're only after the promo offers. Companies might start looking at the detail and determine that you aren't worth getting as a new customer.

    • +1

Canceling a card in theory has nothing but a potentially positive impact on your credit rating. In fact AFAIK a cancellation does not even appear. The only trace of a cancellation is a reduction in the total credit limit.

It is applying for a credit, regardless of whether you're approved or rejected which appears as a "credit enquiry".

Other actions which trigger a credit enquiry:

      • Changing electricity/gas providers
      • Applying for a contract for a phone plan
      • Applying for a personal loan/home loan (fairly obvious, surely)

I think the impact on the credit file is a little overstated. I don't mean to say churning through cards has no impact, but probably less of an impact than what people think.

Disclaimer: I'm not entirely sure as to how the recent change to "Comprehensive Credit Reporting" has affected everything. AFAIK only Citibank have really embraced the change

      • I tend to agree. I'm burning me and Mrs tizey credit file pretty hard at the minute - so our credit files have many queries over past 6months… Im not far off CC application #7 for the past 6months.

In 3 years time when we are applying for a mortgage to buy our 2nd house, I have a tendency to think that ability to service current debt + ability to save deposit for 2nd house + lack of unsecured debt (could shutdown every card we have) will go a lot further for approval than a high credit score.

Happy to be proven wrong, but I feel there is too much emphasis put on there credit file queries. That is one indicator - not the be all and tell all indicator of credit worthiness.

        • 7 over 6 months sounds really hardcore..
I try not to do more than one every 2 months. At the start I was happy to spam a little more and apply for two at a time, but since then I've tried hard to maintain this "gap".

But yes agree with what you have said (which I guess was essentially agreeing with what I said initially lol)

        • @illumination:

Yeah its taken a beating, but will be backing off in 2017 to no more than 1 a qtr for the foreseeable future and being a lot more selective with deals taken up.

That said, the points bonuses we've obtained in the last 6months will get us anywhere we want to go at the pointy end of a plane for about the next 3 years.

All I need is a credit card that gives a signup bonus of additional annual leave and I'd be in heaven!!

      • Yeah, I think a bigger problem is that a lot of these cards are "high end" with minimum credit limits of $10k or $15k. Half a dozen of those - combined with the "permanent" cards you may have - and you've got a combined credit card limit knocking on the door of $100k which I think is a bigger flag for the banks than the number of inquiries (because their affordability calc will be based on an assumption you've maxed that out and need to make the minimum payment).

The only time I've been rejected for a credit card in the last ten years was when it would have taken my total credit card limit over $100k. Since I was approved for another card shortly after with a lower limit, I don't think my credit rating was the problem.

        • Yea I would agree - but the fact of the matter is cancelling a card is literally just a phone call away.

From their pov if they see your debt as being based on the assumption that all your cards are maxed out, that's almost like you instantly reducing your debt from 100k to 80k (whatever the limit of the card you would have just cancelled is).

I guess there is potentially an argument to be made that cancelling a card doesn't mean you don't owe the financial institution with which you just closed the card money - but I don't know the intricacies around that..

        • @illumination:

There's certainly a few things to trade off:
          * You need to keep track of when annual fees are due (though calendar reminders make this pretty easy)
          * You need to keep the accounts open for those sweet, sweet AMEX cashback offers.
          * But that bumps up your combined limit which is a constraining factor on new applications
          * But then you need to consider most cards have a 12month waiting period so it pays to pump & dump as quickly as possible for the next sign-on bonus…

I usually have about three churn cards open at any given time and end up keeping each one for about 4-5 months. On top of that I have a few "permanent" cards I keep for convenience (lots of automatic bills paid by them), tactical (28 degrees for overseas purchases, revolving balance transfer cards for some easy cash) and value (Velocity AMEX for the free flight and points earn on daily spend) purposes.

  • I got rejected for this because I work as a contractor. They told me that you need to have been working at the same place for six months to qualify. The fact that before that I'd been at the same place for two years and had been in this one three months didn't seem to matter, the person I talked to on the phone said this was a non-negotiable condition.

    • +2

Get the amex deal currently running dude. I have been at my current place of work for 6 months. Just received my cards no dramas. Also have a lot credit limit on my file, and I have recently applied and cancelled this exact card (in the last 6 months).

    • +1

I got the same message for when I applied for the Westpac CC last month. FYI I was 5 months into a contracting role at the time but it was obvious from my hourly rate that I was a potential $300k py earner.

My ANZ Black Application was a bit different as I was a current client of good standing for the last 30+ years. They just asked for my Tax Return which I only just completed a few weeks ago and just sent through (along with the Tax office acknowledgement letter).

I should hopefully get the card as well as the points. Either because I applied back in October or because I applied now in November. If I do not get it I will be very annoyed.

  • good deal although they charge for supplementary card holders

  • -1

$425 annual fee!? Holy hell. Waiving it for the first year isn't enough.

    • +1

Cancel it before the first annual fee is due and pay precisely $0 for this card.

      • +1

While this is a good card, the signup offer is better so you should cancel the card as soon as you get your bonus points so you can start waiting the 12 month cooldown period until the next time you can apply. (Jan next year for me.)

      • If you're a bit late and they already charged u the next annual fee, you still can cancel it and get the prorata amount back (at least with ANZ, that's how it worked, as I forgot mine by a couple of weeks last time). Still, best is to cancel it before due date or as others said, just cancel it once you get the bonus, though it could take a while in some case (my current one took more than 6 months and requiring a few emails/calls to them as they kept promising to credit the points but never happening)

  • My mistake

  • Help. With this condition "when transferring from an existing ANZ credit card", can somebody help clarify the qualification if you are an existing ANZ rewards (Rewards or Rewards Platinum) cardholder?

    • afaik, it means you dont get the bonus points.

  • The Platinum and Regular cards also have sign-on bonuses of 50k and 25k, respectively.

The last time I rode the ANZ points churn wagon a year ago, it was possible to signup for all three cards and receive bonuses from all of them (so 150k in total in this instance). Anyone know if that's still possible ?

    • Oh I recall hearing something like that. Don't know the answer, but are you saying that you could apply for:

      • ANZ Frequent Flyer Black
      • ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum
      • ANZ Frequent Flyer "Normal"

and get the bonus points for all 3?

      • Yep.

This definitely worked a year or two ago because I did it. But it was clearly a bug as technically as soon as the first card was approved you're inside the "must not have had another card in the previous 12 months window".

Would be interested to know whether or not it still works. Have posted the same question on the AFF thread about this card as well.

  • Do u need to hold card for Qantad lounge or its lifttime?

    • QANTAS Club has an annual fee. They used to do a lifetime membership ages ago (about $5k from memory) but discontinued it.

    • There's no Qantas lounge access with this card.

      Instead, there are:
      a) Two Qantas Club lounge access passes per year — these can be used by any person flying on a JQ/QF flight before they expire (the expiry date is typically 12-24 months)
      b) Discounted Qantas Club membership — this is a paid annual membership for access to the Qantas Club and the ANZ Black card gives you a discount for each year you purchase membership with your ANZ Black card, so it only lasts as long as you have the ANZ Black card.

  • Are ATO payments included in the $2,500/3 month spend? Do they earn points as well?

    • ATO payment are seen as a cash advance with this card

  • Will I get record/bad record in bank system about applying then cancel CC?

    • They only record when u apply, doesn't really matter whether u cancel/keep it (or even get rejected). It's adding an entry on Veda record when u apply (that's all everyone can see). It'd affect for applying other CC (where computer decides OK or not). For something like home loan, well, you can always submit a proof if u do cancel it as it'd be a human doing the processing.

  • Is a supplement card holder of Anz black eligible for this offer, if the card was cancelled just 3 months before

    • +1

Supplementary cardholders are not "actual" (primary) cardholders so them holding a supplementary card has no bearing on their eligibility for this offer in the context of the 12 months thingo.

      • slightly off topic, but if I add my wife as a supplementary card holder, does that trigger another credit check (for either me or my wife)?

        • +1

Nope cause she's not technically borrowing money

        • The bank may do some sort of check on your wife.

When I tried to get a supp card for my Dad, from American Express (note: not one of the banks), it was denied as he'd had some credit problems with them in the past.

A supp card for my mum, applied for at the exact same time, was approved without a problem.

        • @illumination: does the supplementary holder recieve travel insurance?

        • @aussie1:

yes and also your partner and child should recieve insurance with your card without being a supp holder

        • @Stahh: thank you

      • Thanks

  • +1

Has anyone been contacted yet? Still waiting for that call from the subcontinent call centre ANZ uses…

    • Been years since I applied for a card, why do they have to call when they just request the data (eg payslips) they need anyway?

      • If that is the way they've always done it then no reason to change right?

      • not that it's a major deterrent, but it's probably used as a good tool to reduce risk of fraud.

If a person is just sending in falsified documents to create credit card accounts, they might have trouble keeping track of too many apps. If they call you, at least they speak to a real person who would be able to confirm the information provided to them.

        • Thanks, this seems to resonate with my experience.

They called to ask for payslips and then proceeded to just verify the information provided.

  • Does anyone know if the 2 free lounge passes are per calendar year or based on card anniversary. I took offer up and got 2 passes in October, wondering if I can get 2 more in January…

    • When I had the card nearly a year ago, it was 12 months from when you ordered the lounge passes. Advise you call them to confirm if this is still the case

  • Flying on Qantas this Sunday 4th December 2016 with family of 5, including a baby, and looking to see if anyone is willing to offload their Qantas lounge passes.

I'm looking to sign up to this deal for wife and I, but doubt the lounge pass will be available before we leave this sunday :(.

If anyone in Perth is happy to offload theirs, I'll be happy to accept! Also open to any trades if you're looking for something in particular or $.

PM me if anyone is so generous :).

    Thanks!

  • +1

Didnt get declined or approved. Expect to get a call?

    • I got a call to verify my submitted info, a strange process. But yet to receive my approval.

  • +5

I applied on Friday (wasn't instantly approved - was told to wait), received a text to supply my most recent pay slips on Saturday (which I immediately responded to), and got a call on Wednesday from the Indian call center chasing up a small detail about some over time I received during one of the pay periods. Was approved on the spot which was a relief as I read here that they're being quite tough. This is my 10th cc this year (and 25 in the last 3) so I thought I was toast. Just goes to ahow that if you've never defaulted and pay everything on time (as I do) you can still make the most of these offers.

I've netted well over 1 million qff points in 3 years doing this and have taken 5 return busines class trips to Mexico City, San Fran, Bankok, HK and Singers. I wished I'd discovered this lark in my 20s rather than late 30s but better late than never. Looking forward to doing it all again next year.
