Nespresso Pods Advice

Office has a Nespresso machine but does not supply the pods.
I am looking to buy and bring some to work to save some money.. less than $1 per pod vs at least $3 to buy coffee outside..

I am new to the world of Nespresso, so I have few questions:
1. Does Nespresso machine only work with Nespresso pods?
If not, which ones are good alternatives?

  1. Where can I get the cheapest Nespresso (or Nespresso-compatible) pods?

  2. Which flavour(s) is your favourite?

Thanks

Have a look at this current deal :
Buy 130 Nespresso Capsules, Get 20 Free $88.40 (Combine with AmEx Cashback = $68.40 Delivered = 45.6c Each)

Only thing is you will get 150 capsules - not sure if you consider that too much. Only 75 days if you drink 2 cups a day :-)

OP of deal said there is another deal for 90(+10 free) capsules, but which won't hit limit for Amex cashback.

    • Do the pods have an expiry date? If so, how long usually?

They have a best before of 1-2 years generally from Nespresso, although there is some variation. They are vacuum sealed so I've had no issues with pods that are past best before, although I've seen people claiming they are awful if past this date

Deleted comment - better answer by DrC.

  • Re nespresso compatibles, found this
Woolworths Gold Fairtrade Coffee Capsules (Nespresso Compatible) - $3 for 10 Pods

Cannot comment on the compatibles, but genuine Nespresso is very good.

I have had these. They are a good coffee.
But I eventually brought a aeropress to work so I can use regular ground coffee.

      • For daily use, I also use normal coffee beans. Works out much cheaper.

As per the deal if you order 90 capsules you get 10 free, and if you order 130 capsules you get 20 free.

Delivery is also free at the moment, so even without the $20 amex cashback its actually about the cheapest you'll get pods.

There are alternative pods that are compatible with Nespresso machines, but many of them aren't very good and others leak.

Make sure you are buying the right pods! There are slim disc shape ones that are often used in workplace machines, and the standard ones for home machines or work that you buy at the Nespresso store.

Good point about this … think I was at a hotel/retreat/convention place, and saw a different type of pods for nespresso, incompatible with the home ones.

    • Aha! I didn't know this!
I think one time I saw the pods like in the first picture near the machine in the office..
Are they newer pods for newer machine or something (or the other way around) ?

      • I cannot seem to find the disc (first picture) from Nespresso website.. seems all pods?

        • I'm not sure where you buy the discs from - I have a home machine that uses the standard capsules. Maybe in store?

  • I find grinders nespresso pods (I buy them at woolworths) to be very good.

    • this

  • There are lots of different type of nespresso compatible pods you can get at the supermarket. I think Coles even have their own brand ones for around $4 for 10. They all say nespresso compatible on the box. Personally I like the Vittoria Oro and Italian Blend ones

  • Can you re fill a Nespresso pod as easy as a MAP / Cafitally pod?

Plenty of Nespresso compatible pods to choose from at Woolworths, go take a look, I'd just buy the genuine pods though with pricing from $0.68 cents a pod, free standard shipping and a bonus capsule offer with current orders.

Regarding so called Nespresso compatible pods, I've only ever had trouble with them in the office Nespresso machine.

Either getting stuck, or not allowing decent water flow so the machine errors. Buy the real pods instead, you'll have less headache.

  • My wife and I decided to make a list of Nespresso Compatible pods, and originals too, then graded them against a Mcdonalds flat white (from the mcafe, not from their auto coffee machine version that the teenagers use), as we have found a fairly stable taste over the maccas we have used around Aus (Joonadlup WA, Whitford WA, Perth WA, Cairns Queensland, Ingham Queensland, Sydney NSW, Woolongong NSW etc..). All as a shot in a 250ml cup, with 200ml pre heated milk for flat white taste. WE are not professional coffee tasters, just trying to help others out if we can.

These pods worked in both of our machines, one is a Pixie Clips, and the other is a Prodigio, both made by Delonghi. No pods stick in either machine, and all pods run water through pods fine.
GREAT: Nespresso:- Livanto, Roma, Voluto, Arpeggio and one made under brand name "MUST" called Cremosa (Available at IGA and coffeepodshop at about 40cents each)

NICE: Nespresso:- Ristretto, RosaBoya De Colombia, Dulsoa Da Brasil, Dharkan. The Woolies own Intese, Cafe Royal - Agents Choice, "Must" branded Puro Arabica, Napoli and Ristretto.

OK: Nesepresso:- Indriya, Vanilio, Kazaar. Then Vittorio Mountain Blend (Needed 2 pods to get decent flavour), MUST branded Deca.

NOT GOOD OR JUST SIMPLY AWFUL:Nespresso:- Cosi, Fortissio Lungo, Vivalto Lungo and Linizio lungo (Dry reaching thing about drinking this one again), then Coles intense (Weakest coffee I have ever had), Vitorrio Italian Blend (2 pods used and still hardly taste anything, waste of money). Sometimes it costs much more using these pods to get anything like a decent coffee. Should not need several shots to get any flavour

So, this is an opinion of just my wife and I. We have checked several of the same flavour in each above to ensure it was not just a vad day, and both agreed on how good or bad they were (Used filtered water in both machines too). Of note that the "MUST" brand pods purchased from coffeepodshop online all had use by date within 3 to 4 months of them arriving in WA, so if we had ordered a large amount instead of just 10 of each they would be out of date before you could finish them, but when we check the use by date on the MUST pods sold at our local IGA Joondalup, the pods were the same price and had over a year life left on them (Looks like online sell nearly out of date pods). Price of pods is a big deal, but in general I would say that looking at a nespresso pod for 60 cents against a non brand one for 50 cents is hardly worth the effort. I find some of the compatibles I use vary from batch to batch. Nespresso are more constant. Can't go wrong with the Woolies Intense and MUST 3 names listed as NICE.

If this helps anyone who is starting out and does not want to get burnt buying $200 worth of mixed flavours and finding only half of them drinkable then we are happy about that. We thought that comparing to a known flavour like a Maccas flat white would be useful.

With Nespresso online, we make our orders for theirs when they have deals on (always running one deal or another), like our last one for 190pods we selected then plus they provided another 30 pods free (3 X 10 pack). They decide on the pods they send us free (Meant to be set flavours that are not on our NICE flavour list). But of note, we have been with Online orders for some time, and although they state that the free pods are set ones that you may not like, we are lucky that on each occasion they provide us with extra pods that they can see we regularly order anyway. Not sure if others find that, but they do appear to want to keep their regulars happy that way. When you weigh up that their pods have 2 years use by date, and with the freebies and free delivery the pods are nearer to price of the compatibles anyway. So do you homework.

    • Oops, Nespresso have one year use by (All my pods anyway). Not sure how big a deal the use by date is anyway, but the taste is the big deal, and using the right amount of milk too. I find that most pods work best if your end cup is 250ml in size, so you make up the rest of the cup with hot milk once you have run your pod through the machine, and most pods I run on the small setting, the Lungo pods on the tall setting.
