Home Security - Security Cameras

I am looking at getting a 4 camera home surveillance camera system.
I want 4 x 1080p or better cameras.

I have a decent PC they can be controlled by, or I am also open to a dedicated PVR system.

I am assuming I should go for power over ethernet cameras attached to a power over ethernet switch?

What cameras and software do you guys recommend?

How many hours of recording of 4 x 1080p cameras will an 8tb hard disk hold?

  • I'm still looking at getting cameras myself, so I don't have any first hand experience to share, but is that a single 8tb hard drive? You might run into problems there if it is

  • It is a single 8tb drive, but I can make it multiple drives if that is better?

Logitechshop.com.au used to sell security kits pretty cheap, but it seems they are pretty much out of business now?

What about the Netgear Arlo Q series?

    • The single 8tb use SMR. Assuming you overwrite the data, after the first pass the transfer rate will slow down to whatever it is. If that can't cope with the 4 cameras, stuff will get dropped.

  • Something like this unit might be good

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SANNCE-8CH-1080P-AHD-Security-DVR…

Has no cameras with it though. And don't know the "Sannce" brand?

    How easy to setup?

    Cameras:
Got 2 Foscm cameras from FoscamWA, great service and good price.
    FI9961EP (POE)
FI9900p (non POE, would get the POE instead now)
Both have great resolution and good night vision.

    Switch:
Got the Foscam switch, but didnt work well for me, had defect, returning it for refund.
    Instead now bought the https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Networking-Wired/Gigabit…
Its GBit, no issues at all.
You could go POE+ , but its a lot of extra money for no gain unless you have specific plans for higher powered devices.

    DVR
I use Synology NAS ( limited to 2 cams without extra licenses pack, about $70 per extra cam for license).
+ uses low power, electricity cost, multi purpose device.
    Alternatively use a Windows PC
+suggest Blue IRIS, friend uses it with great success.

    Recording time:
I have set a limit of 10GB per cam, using motion detection and lots of recordings I get usually about a month per cam.

    Cheers

    • Thanks

Foscam WA have a web site or are they an EBAY dealer?

I think Blue IRIS might be good, though a dedicated NAS could be good too..

Hey folks best cheap home security system you can have is to place large dog water bowls at the front door and back door with the name Bear or Brutus etc… If you are going away get a neighbour to make sure the bowls are full of water, plus put a note on the door, Hey House sitter ……… Bear is in the backyard Thanks see you soon.

    • Make sure you leave dog crap in your yard to go with it.

  • Something like this with a bit of bargaining down.

CCTV security system. IP camera, 4tb hard drive, all cables,
    http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/altona-meadows/other-cameras/…

  • something like below might be what you're looking for, hikvision gives great picture for the price, poe switch is built into the NVR in this case just plug and play, should be australian sellers, didn't look very hard

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HIKVISION-4-0MP-KITS-DS-7604NI-E1…

  • Are you planning to use this surveillance system for security? Unless it's a trusted company it's not going bring your insurance cost down. Also what happens if a person break into your house and see a security cams and takes the hdd/recording device as well?

    • you hide the recording device, most criminals are too stupid to really bother grabbing the device
Also Blueiris records to "the cloud" and sends realtime emails and SMS alerts to me when it detects a parameter out of the normal

Works rock solid and is better than any B2B company

    • Its for security

Some c@nt keeps stealing stuff from my front yard and also probing the front windows.

I want video footage of it so I can take to the police and also post their photos on Facebook (we are a small town, people will know who it is).

    Hikvision
    POE Switch
Blueiris on a decent PC with 4-8tb hdd
    Don't look back
Network cable is Cheap as chips to run

    • Had a look at HKVision but saw reviews that the newer Foascam have better night vision.
Also couldn't find an Aussie reseller.

Night vision is fine, I get at least 20-25m out of the Hikvision camera I have, in all honesty nightvision on any camera is going to have some loss, but mine is good enough to get face detail, read number plates and badges of cars so it can't be that bad, all for $120

Hikvision is the best camera I have bought
You can only get them via CCTV companies
Decent Ebay sellers provide cheap cameras and they work fine

        I pay 120 a piece for a 4mp turret
they do fine night vision, much better than foscam, cameras unlike phones etc don't really die or have issues

Hikvision are the industry standard here in Brisbane for most CCTV installers, you can go for the more expensive pelco / foscam or whatever brands but cost "Considerably" more for very little improvement, Hikvision cameras for me have been faultless and I have no issue with Hikvision international support for when i locked myself out of one the cameras and forgot the password

Many companies will charge 4k for 4 cameras, dvr and cabling, if you can DIY you will save a fortune and have a good system for years to come

4 years and my 2mp hikvision older turret is still going, had rain, dust, wind, hail all over it and still to this day looks good as new

  • I would suggest going for a good quality CCTV brand something that professionals use. Dont go with cheap eBay stuff as it will just break and will be hard to replace as you can't guarantee they will still be around.

I know of a few CCTV installers and they all tell me they are using a brand called Provision ISR. They say its an Israel based company and very good equipment.

You do realize many of the "cctv" camera companies use hikvision cameras lol

  • I'd recommend hikvision cameras too. Using an NVR with 4 cameras. We've placed one in our porch and use the movement detection to notify us if someone is at the door.

  • Bullet or dome cameras do you recommend?

  • Guys also be aware that there are stark differences in the HikVision NVR's - a small change to the model number can mean a BIG difference to what you are getting.

For example I want an 8 channel PoE NVR.

The cheapest and most common model being pushed on EBAY is the DS-7608NI-E2/8P
    http://www.hikvision.com/us/Products_1_10649_i8725.html

What I really want is something like the DS-7608-I2/8P
    http://www.hikvision.com.au/Products_accessries_212_i18809.h…

    The key differences being:
    E2 is 1080p maximum resolution - I2 is 4K maximum
    E2 can run up to 2 x 4tb hard disks. I2 can run up to 2 x 6tb

WHat is confusing though is the I2 doesnt say it records in 4k, just outputs?!?

WHat is the point of recording only 1080p but having 4k output?

  • Aliexpress for all your hikvison needs as it's a hell of a lot cheaper than in Australia

    • What seller?

      • Just check how many orders they had and most likely the best seller will be the one with the most orders.

  • Anyone here recommend the Foscam C1 or C2 cameras?

I've been using Foscam for ages now and think it's time to upgrade them so was wondering if these are any good

I don't know anything about Hikvision or how to set them up, I want to be able to have the cameras connected each via Ethernet cable and all of them to be powered separately, wall mounted and then viewed on my iPhone

This is the way I'm running my Foscam right now and I'd like to stick to this setup either with newer Foscam or Hikvision

Anyone recommend the type and model of Hikvision to get and from what seller (non fake ones)

    • How many cameras you want?

      • At this stage I was gonna just buy one to test it out but in the end I'll need 6 in total

  • Can you buy Foscam from Amazon and then just changed the 5V DC power plug to an Australian one?

  • Ugh

    I picked up a used HIKVision DS-7616-I2

It has a username/password when you boot it, and the guy who sold it to me doesn't know the password!

  • So in the end I went for a HIKVision DS-7616-I2 with 6 x DS-2CD2342WD-I dome cameras and a 4TB hard disk.

Pretty happy with how it is all working. Very easy to setup. I dont use all the bells and whistles, but it works well, gives me good visibility and I'm happy with the investment.

Getting it installed (wiring from room to 6 points in roofline) cost me almost as much as the bloody hardware!

I recommend HIKVision stuff without hesitation based on my experience.

    • How much did the whole setup cost? Did you do the installation yourself or got someone to do it?

      • I paid someone to run ethernet ports from my office to the 6 cameras, plus mount the cameras.

I did the setup of the NVR (which is very easy).

The cameras cost about $130 each, and the NVR was $400 (good deal 2nd hand used 2 hrs) - got ripped off on the wiring, that cost about $600 from memory.

SO all up around $1750. More than I wanted to spend but now it just works the whole time and has already proven to deter previously pesky people…

At night you can see the infrared light on the camera so you can see from the street the setup is real and working…

        • I have the same issue. As we don't have a gate in the front, the driveway is easily accessible from the road. Some budding criminals stole a few bikes from the front of the house recently and my wife is a bit worried.

I am looking for a security system too. Ideally, two cameras to cover the front of the house along with nvr etc + installation. Have checked Gumtree and most Hikvision packages are around 1200-1300 installed. No idea about the cameras and their quality though.

Would you mind having a look at the link below…
          https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/keysborough/other-cameras/sp…

Do these prices for system and installation look reasonable?

        • @ms:

My suggestion would be firstly choose exactly what you want.

I wanted the dome style cameras, not bullets.

I would go for high MP (3MP minimum). You want to make sure they have decent night vision (the EXIR cameras from HIK are much better at night than the non-EXIR range from HIK).

I chose the HIKVISION DS-2CD2342WD-I which is a 4 megapixel camera with good EXIR night vision.

You then need to decide what width of lens you want. I have some 2.8mm width and some 4mm.

2.8mm gives you a broad wide view, 4mm or higher is more zoomed in - which is best depends on the application. I am zoomed in on specific points of weakness. I have the broad view to show the full approaches to my property.

I got a 16 port NVR because I didnt want to get only 4 ports then find I wanted to add more cameras. 16 is overkill but i got a great deal on it so was happy.

Once you know what you want, talk to the people about a package deal for EXACTLY what you want, not what they offer in generic bundles.
Generally if you buy multiple cameras, an NVR and installation they do decent deals.

Of the linked deals I liked the $1600 package.
I suspect they could throw in an 8 port NVR rather than 4 port for the same price ($1600).
They say they want $300 extra to go from a 4 port to an 8 port NVR - that is a total ripoff. The cost of the upgrade shouldnt be more than half that and as I say if you twist their arm you should get it for $100 or less.

  • If anyone got Foscam C1, please upgrade the firmware of the cameras ASAP.
