Would You Unregister You're Cars if You Copped a 6 Month Suspension?

Friend of mine has been suspended for 6 months, is it worth unregistering his vehicles to collect remainder of ctp/rta cost and then re register when licence is back?

    Personally I wouldn't bother.

Having to call up to cancel the registration, organise a roadworthy ($100 +), go to Vicroads and reregister isn't worth a couple of hundred.

How old is the vehicle? What if the roadworthy inspection finds your tyres are bald or exhaust too noisu. Then it'll cost more than just paying the original registration fee.

    • This is the best answer. Re registering a car is a pain.

Your friend could rent their car(s) via https://www.drivemycar.com.au/howitworks to defray their costs while not driving.

They can also https://www.drivemycar.com.au/ManageMyCar the whole thing.

If you unregister the vehicle then does your comprehensive insurance still cover you? Someone might steal the car during the 6 month period, need to make sure you are still covered.

you're friend could spend part of the six months helping you with you're spelling skillz

  • De-registering a vehicle is an good option for 'your friend'…..IF:
if knows no one will ever need to drive it for him/her, for fuel or servicing or as as their chauffeur for eg,
if they have a tyre pump and a large yard to drive around to prevent vehicle deterioration, brakes, bearing & tyre damage,
if having no…none… insurance at all….,need to confirm with their particular Insur' Co.
if they do the sums on $$ lost for duty and fees, charges and CPI increases upon re-registering,
if adding the permits and fees for a Roadworthy check, plus the inconvenience of doing all that pending the month of registration now and exact months left, the refund value and doing all the sums for time & $$'s above.

Unless stored correctly, cars can deteriorate very badly very quickly, even for only 6 months.

A talk needs to had with the Insurance Co, Rego dept, and get the facts from the depts that charge the $$ and or refund the $$ and then do the sums.

Not worth it for me and I have a 3rd vehicle that does about 500k a year.

  • No way.. Re registering it again could be aot of work for older older czars
