  • 4¢ worth for $1 spend? Probably better off with cashback elsewhere, no?

    • Each to their own. We value a QF point @ 7 cents each when used correctly i.e a 280k Business or 420k first class round the World explorer fare. So this would be worth 42 cents per dollar. However; if people want to buy toaster in the QF store, then that is ugly. YMMV.

      • This is only true if one actually values the flight at retail price. I personally would rather pay $3000-5000 for economy flights. Even if business class was say only ~$7,000, I'd still consider economy.

With this in mind, I then value a point at around 2.5¢ - making this around 15% cashback. Once you factor in the $500-1000 costs, this is closer to 2.3¢.

Officially Qantas claims a point is 2.28¢ each (on competitions) - this equals just over 13.5% cash back.

Tl;Dr: depends how one personally values a point, though I don't believe retail price / point cost is a correct calculation as not many of us would actually purchase a retail business/first class world trip. As for those who would - enjoy the saving, but I'm unsure why you're on ozbargain…

        • Retail not relevant unless it is what you need. As I said, a round the world 280k / 420k explorer flight … if you get 5 mins, go have a look at them. It isn't the retail value of the QF flight but rather all the flights strung together and all the stops on the multitude of airlines. We've used them time and time across a 9 month period of travel with stop / starts. And economy is the worst way to spend (worst value) IMHO. Business and First (for those of us that want them) is indeed valued whereas economy is ugly.

        • @nonpop: couldn't agree more
The points are not really quantifiable if your talking about experiences, I could never afford to fly in J but with points this becomes a possibility. Just booked a 280k for 2 later this year and would never have been able to fly at the pointy end without the points.
Thanks to the OP for the post, I needed to start looking for my upcoming trip.

        • @nonpop:
          Qantas retails the same/similar package(s).

        • @dyl:
Not the same thing really, those are around the world, the reward ones are distance based (with a few other rules) so you don't have the limits of only going east or west or having to go to x amount of continents.

        • @dyl: different product, different outcome. Unless you've used the 280k J explorer points fare, then you don't know the real value of using points and just how valuable they are for this hidden gem. Majority of people have no idea and when they do spend the points they waste them.

        • @Radio8tiv: spot on. Gold! We now spread ours out almost over a year. We artificially 'return' along the way to then recommence the journey. We have used point to point positioning flights again using points in the past but now interweave 280k journeys so parts of them overlap. That has been mind blowing to discover and make work. Now I can't believe we didn't do that in the past. It allows us to often artificially start the journey in somewhere like South Africa or Chile or Colombo so the fees shrink to insignificance. Anyway happy travelling and as always YMMV
