Best way to learn html, css, javascript

I've previously worked in positions where quite frankly I've been spoon fed and had someone else design emails and landing pages etc for me. I've moved to more of a start up business now so want to learn HTML, CSS and javascript.

Can anyone suggest good ways to learn these skills, any good books, online sites, courses (paid or otherwise) or anything else?

Thank you for any advice you can give.

I found this very good for learning HTML5: http://diveintohtml5.info I'm not sure how much you already know so not sure what else to suggest (except obviously the corresponding book to that site).

Also good resource for free (sometimes a bit older) technical books: https://www.packtpub.com/packt/offers/free-learning

Treat me like an idiot. I know the very basics but wouldn't hurt me to start at the beginning. Thanks for the help. I've done a little bit of stuff on code academy

These tutorials are pretty good. They start from basic and do not assume any prior knowledge. And they are free.

    Happy exploring!

  • Look up thenewboston on Youtube. Detailed tutorial videos on a wide variety of Information Technology and other subjects.

  • What I personally feel is that these online websites and video tutorials don't teach you much than expected. You should apply for an internship (paid or unpaid) at a decent firm and learn well. Because until you don't get a good experience of something, you won't be able to get your hands onto your new business.

    • Unfortunately that would be a bit of a backwards step. I'm supporting a family on my wage so can't really intern. My company is very supportive though and I'm keen to learn, they hired me for my current skills but there's nothing like learning something new.

I used to hear programmers saying "Beg, borrow or steal". If you're website isn't going to be too complicated then consider Google searching for a free website builder. You could still edit the code to tailor to your tastes.

  • Go through some basic tutorials; once you have some basics under your belt, as Mumbles said, you will be able to look for and adapt stuff from the internet.

Code academy mate, teaches all the main things for web dev, coming from basic to better stuff, you should be able to get away with the free version fairly easily.

    • I've used Code Academy in my downtime at work. It's pretty good but after a long break I have so much damn trouble getting back into it. Especially since past lessons are used in later ones I find myself getting instantly lost. But that's my problem not Code's. Thumbs up for Code! :)

  • html - I taught myself basics using this a number of years ago.
