    An optimist will tell you the glass is half-full and the engineer will tell you the glass is twice the size it needs to be.

      As an Engineer, I think you mean that an accountant would tell you the glass is twice the size it needs to be. (Good) Engineers always build in a contingency / safety factor.

        A contingency factor our country can't afford and customers don't need or want to pay for. Fit for purpose, not gold plating or ass covering.

          Well that went sour fast, way to ruin a joke.

          That being said, how much do you think it costs when something fails and people die or equipment is damaged? Many contingencies are built in because you can't possibly account for everything all the time. Other contingencies are built in because they need to be (like extra water storage required for a specific set of circumstances or events).

          By the way, I think it's great you've got an opinion on something you (judging by that comment at least) know little to nothing about. /sarcasm

          @ASeawright:

          Sorry, I should have added my sarcasm on and off marks. Was intended to be tongue in cheek. All good!

          @ASeawright:

          I was trying to imitate a beancounter's or Treasurer.

          Reality is I work in engineering and this is the view many of these beancounters have sadly

          @hardya: haha fair enough then, sarcasm is usually hard to read unfortunately…

        You've assumed the engineer designed the cup. Engineers should never assume…

  • Good post OP! I need my CPD hours but these courses are too expensive. As a OzBargainer, I will stick to free events :P
