Help with Cities Skyline PC build?

Really love Cities Skyline and spent a few hours/days/weeks playing it on my 2014 Macbook Pro (2.6 GHz Intel Core i5, 8gig Ram, Intel Iris 1536 MB) until the city got too large and things started to slow down.

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a cheap gaming pc build to help resurrect my city building dreams? From what I understand, cities skyline does like a fast CPU as well as a GPU.

If I played plenty of FPS then dropping +$1k on a gaming rig would make sense. But my gaming interests are somewhat niche so I baulk at spending too much money. The other option of course is to not buy anything and get on without cities skyline et al.

But also wondering if it would be feasible to get a second hand work pc and just jam a decent second hand or not top of the line graphics card in it?

(I do also play fifa as well on the ps3, but have not bothered with a ps4)

Thanks for any suggestions, comments, questions, jokes etc etc.

  • Second hand machine should do you fine
I love Cities Skyline and have the XXL edition, it really chokes my poor E560 laptop with its AMD R370 GPU but its a fun game
I would try an find a good second hand i5 machine and get a decent midrange gpu to match :)

    • thanks shawncro. I loaded up an old city today on the macbook just to see what it was like, turned down all the graphics setting to see if it would run smoothly, and having not played it for a year - found the game rather overwhelming and stressful! All this maintenance to do. Corpses piling up. Blackouts. Buildings burning down. Low graphics actually made it hard to figure out what was going on. It felt like work!

I have thought about external GPU for the macbook but not sure that that's practical.

      • Don't bother, external GPU would cost more than good second hand system tbh

  • Any of these GPUs are close to the recommended GPU:

    GTX 295
    GTX 480
    GTX 570
    GTX 660
    HD 4870 X2
    HD 6970
    HD 7850
    R7 265

    RAM: 6GB or more

Pair that with the fastest i5 or better that you can find.

    • Thanks Diji1 - will do a bit of a browse based on your suggestions.

  • i7 860
    16gb ram
    Ssd
    Gtx780ti

    Bf1 Ultra 60fps

    • Thanks dood.

      • Overclocked dude. With a noctua nh-d14.

I cannot justify a new build yet.

My next buy is prob gona be a gtx1070 or better and slap it into this 1st gen CPU.
That's before i go looking for another CPU and motherboard.

In my experience of cheaping out with computer parts… it really pays to buy a good cpu cooler.
Dont pay full price for win10.
Go for the best GPU u can afford.

I hope to try fetch $200ish for my used gtx780ti classified.

    • +1

No point going to an i7 for Skylines since it doesnt make use of the extra threads. And i5 is best price wise in this situation.

  • So my work is giving me an old desktop PC! My old desktop!

Just wondering if anyone thinks its

    a) worth it and; b) possible,

to buy a low profile GPU for cheap (second hand or new) to use as a cities skyline machine? And if it is, whether anyone can recommend one? Or whether I should ask this kind of question on whirlpool!
