Registered Charity Seeking E-Waste Needs Your Help inc ideas and strategies

Hi Everyone,

A friend of mine is volunteering for a recently registered Australian charity which supplies IT (computer hardware and training) for disadvantaged children and other groups [currently] in the Sydney area. He has asked for help,

All Green Care allgreencare.org.au is the charity and they need help in the form of donated e-waste ESPECIALLY LAPTOPS, which they can clean up and pass on to those they care for. They receive a small amount of government funding but it is not enough.

Also, does ayone have any ideas or strategies on the best way on how to procure e-waste???
[rather than just starting at A in the phone book or sending out emails which land in junkmail]

Great ideas will receive the heart felt gratitude of many children and adults who currently lack IT in their lives.

Please help with this worthwhile cause.
Cheers,
Adhoc

Could be worthwhile contacting the waste management department of your local council. Some councils have e-waste collection services.

    • Thanks Sandman, I will pass that on.

They would do well by partnering with large companies

    • Excellent idea, but how would they do it?
They are mostly volunteers with no PR dept, so how would they get a large company to 'engage' ?

      • Networking and networking events

      • Thats part of it i guess. Much like writing grant applications and the like, it's worthwhile getting someone on board who can do that sort of work.

Approach schools or the company that manages their IT equipment.

When schools replace their PCS every 3-5 years; it usually goes to a company(for free of course) that destroys the data then get thrown out as part of the IT service they provide to the school.

When I was working, I always felt so guilty throwing away 100s of Pentium 4 desktop PCs(I know they're a POS but still…) that were in perfect working order. Now days, they're probably throwing away Core 2 Duos or even first gen Core i series.

These 'bulk' PCS you see listed in Gumtree/ebay/Grays are usually ex government/school PCs that have been disposed of.

    • Thanks Wombok, schools added to list.

    • Same with Universities- they go through a fair few, and they're not always returned back to vendor.

  • The problem with laptops is that people are worried about their data being scammed - so even if you get people to donate them they are likely to be minus the hard disk. I think the real problem is a lot of businesses lease their laptops nowdays and then the companies involved, probably, clean them up and send them overseas. I would suggest you go talk to some of the councils and see what is in their ewaste bins. Thank your friend for trying to help people in need.

    • Very valid point about data scamming/disposal on hdd.

  • Join PC enthusiast groups on facebook or what not. you might be able to get volunteers as well.

  • Partner with companies that sell laptops and maybe when they sell they can offer to take old laptops and recycle

    • Thanks, great idea.

  • You could contact companies like www.greenbox.com.au
They are involved in disposing of ICT equipment from many businesses.

  • Thanks everyone for your great ideas, lots of good karma to you :-)
