First Time Mover - Recommended Businesses? Tips?

So I'll be moving out by myself for the first time from Sydney to Orange and I'm weighing up the costs of the ~9 hour drive in total + tire change/checkup and that of just hiring a removalist.

I'll only have a simple lounge, an office desk + chair and a bed as the heaviest items. All up, the process of moving these things inside the vehicle should take less than half an hour.

What are some of the businesses with a good reputation/prices out there and for those who've done it before, what are your tips for me?

  • hire a van and DIY or just buy some new.

Pretty much this weigh up your valuables versus the total cost of the removals and can hire etc and do a cost benefit analysis with pros and cons.

For my uncle he had a lot of valuable and probably sentimental or just rare cool good stuff so hiring a truck not a van was better but there was a lot to be moved like multiple beds and furniture and they went all over Sydney so hiring worked out to be the best and only way short of trying to sell the whole lot/things and wasting a couple of days or weeks etc.

Sounds like you got a smaller haul so van sounds about right.

I guess the only really simple tips would be to dismantle what you can then wrap it in something soft like a blanket or pillows to prevent damage and protect it from bumping but if your stuff is sturdy or not prone to scratching or bruising then I guess you don't really need much.

If you can somehow rubberise the bottom if you don't have enough items in the van to make a tight fit I guess that could also prevent moving and smashing around.

As for pricing do your research then air task it or gum tree for much lesser.

    • Make sure you check the policy if you want to hire a van though, a lot only cover KMs upto about 250km and then above that you have to pay additional. So OP may have to fork out big to hire a van, and it would probably be cheaper to replace his furniture.

  • Just did done quick googling and researching and if you need some stuff to help with keeping the heavy large objects still and somewhat firmly planted as long as well with connecting cables while you are moving around maybe you can try this?

Basically camping mats that have some I am guessing rubberized suction on them so your bottom legs won't do any scratching and stay more better still.

Kmart Aldi Bunnings and a few other places store them but that expired aldi deal was by far the cheapest and best value.

Good luck on your moving hope the small short work out goes great.

  • We used Kyle Bay Removals. They'll come out and give you a quote. They can also supply boxes, tape and bubble wrap. Overall very happy with them, the quote is final and they don't charge by the hour.

I'll be calling up some removalists in Orange.

Ask them if they are doing any deliveries to Sydney in the near future. Tell them you are semi flexible on the moving dates.

They may give you a good discount rather than drive from Sydney to Orange with an empty truck.

    • probably this if you can find a quote.

Chances are it might be the other way round because i assume demand from moving away from sydney would be greater (based on number of residents).

Some big removalists with lots of trips might even charge equal prices for both trips.
