Drobo Direct Attached
4 bay HDD desktop solution

I know what comments I will get:

-Buy a NAS
-XYZ is cheaper
-Overpriced

I have had a drobo for about 5 years, their build quality, perfomance and customer service is extremely pleasing, never had any issues which could not be resolved.

Cheaper through Kogan eBay for $321.49 delivered with CAU5 coupon code.

  • Anyone know what speeds the DROBO can reach and if the drives can be used in JBOD mode so that in the event of the device dying I can still access data on the drives by using a dock?

Iirc drobo has a proprietary lvm called beyond raid. If the unit goes bye bye they have to fix it unlike most Linux based storage that can be recovered with some mdadm work.

      • Thanks mate. Did some more reading and it's not for me. I think I just need a basic enclosure that supports UASP.

YES, for that reason I have refuse to use proprietary unit like this.

Yep, for that price, buy a NAS!

I'll second that, for that price buy a NAS.
You can get a Qnap with an intel CPU for about that price.
For a little more you can get one of the very nice Synology units.

  • I used to use a Drobo, and I liked it. It did all the things I needed it to do, but it started to develop a problem. I contacted their customer support for assistance. The Drobo was just out of warranty and refused to provide any assistance or guidance on how to fix the problem without buying a one off customer support ticket (which was expensive).

I was not asking for a replacement, just some guidance on what to do. Found the answer eventually through some forums, but thought their customer support would help with guidance on their system.

Bought a Synology NAS to replace the Drobo. The Drobo still works, but I vowed never to buy their product again because of the pooor customer experience.

Had to deal with Synology support yet?
On 3 separate occasions their support has been exemplary, and very personal (non scripted).
You'll be happy with your machine.

  • For that price, I think the ML10v2 with Freenas is superior. To each their own.

  • Can anyone recommend a good 4bay USB 3 device that supports JBOD and UASP? A lot of the ones I've seen max out at around 300MB/s.
