Tiger Rice Cooker JBA-T18A (Made in Japan) $300 at Costco (Membership Required)

1710

First deal, please be nice etc.

I've been looking for a new Tiger brand rice cooker (well known to be the best brand going) for a while, but they seem to be expensive and hard to find at a bricks and mortar shop. My girlfriend picked up this rice cooker from Costco today, and not only is it at least $50 cheaper than any I could find on eBay, Costco has a great warranty in the unlikely case that anything goes wrong with it.

Made in Japan. Around 20 of these were in stock at the Canberra Costco today. Available in fashionable Urban Beige. Deal will probably end when Costco is sold out. Not sure if available in all Costcos.

Get your fluffy, toothy, delicious rice on, OzBargainers.

    • On which finger?
I use the same cup that i measure my rice in and it produces a more consistent result.

      • Index finger.
I feel like every asian kid who's been taught to cook rice would have been taught this method.
Unless I google, I would have no idea how to cook rice the way where you have to measure water.

        • I used to use my pinky until we bought the kambrook - see my other comment.
I now use the same cup that i measure my rice with to measure water which is 1:1 dilution and it produces a consistent result everytime.

        • @mmd: that's the thing though, i just pour my rice directly in without measuring in a cup. I also rinse my rice but I'll give your method a go some time. Thanks

Great deal - my 5.5 cup one that I've been using for 10 years now cost me 280!

  • -1

$5 saucepan, 1 cup of jasmine rice, 1.5 cups of water, 15 minutes on lowest heat with lid on, light fluffy yum rice every time.

$300? Why? we have saucepans no?

It'd take me that long to dig this device out of the cupboard (or lose significant bench space keeping it out).

  • Can anyone tell me if this rice cooker uses a teflon non-stick coated bowl, stainless steel or something else?

  • I don't mean to be a tool, but there's been at least 2 people asking if Coscto have the 5.5cup with only ambiguous answers and at least 2 people claiming the 5.5cup is available "elsewhere" in the $200's but no links / names of the sites.

The only thing I've discovered is this is the 5.5cup mega expensive induction model.
JKT-S10U If you find that under $500 AUD you're doing super well
JAX-S10U Current model 5.5cup or JAX-R10U finding those under $300 seems rare too.

I /assume/ those 3 models are the legit Jap made ones.

Could be the JNP-1000? 5 Cup cooker that at the above is $230 but I've seen that model around $180ish on eBay. Last looked around Nov last year but ended up going for the larger 10 cup version (JNP-1800) which with an ebay coupon at the time came out to about $220 shipped.

Note it lacks the smart functions of some more expensive models, but I can't see us needing that anyway. Has a cook toggle and once the rice is cooked it'll switch to 'keep warm' which should keep the rice warm and edible for a few additional days. Nice and simple. I assume any of the smart ones will be very high $200's (someone linked to a 5.5 one below at APpliances Online for $300).

I do think the external floral pattern is ugly and feels very antiquated to me, but the cooker itself is solid.

      • Those ones seem like the Chinese made models? Also I figure they look so different, surely people aren't comparing the 2?

        • I'm pretty sure they're still Japanese made. A number of sites state they are.

No idea what others are referring too other than I couldn't find these models near the $200 mark, so if they are $200 something I assume it's high $200s.

        • @Smigit: Agree - but there is the odd post on Whirlpool and I think Reddit, claiming Sub $300 for the fancy (non induction) ones.

    • This is only 5 cup.. $325 usually.

      The post is a 10 cup $355.

These rice cookers are legendary. Parents have used this brand for 20 odd years. I think they've only ever owned two, first one died after like 10 years of everyday use hahah….

Does this just do rice? For $300? Good deal from a bargain standpoint vs its original price. But Im out

    • If you are inclined, you can also turn your rice cooker into a steamer.

I have a small rice cooker where I can steam some small dimsums if all I want is a quick snack.

      • -4

That sounds like a cool idea but I think we'll stick to the way we originally make it.

Ps: to the person who negged me; enjoy your 300$ STEAMED rice

  • Tiger once made the best rice cookers but cuckoo are better now.

You're paying around $140-$650 for a cuckoo though but they do talk to you.

I use cuckoo and have a tiger. You get much better rice out of the cuckoo than tiger.

Even the 10 cup cuckoo can be had for around $140. The other good brand is zorjirushi.

"Even the 10 cup cuckoo can be had for around $140."

Any link to it? The one listed is $615.

Oh and these are also on special because the JBA models are being replaced for the better JAX models. The JAX model are $355 full price.

    • I wonder what the difference is.

We use a Panasonic rice cooker (an Indian model, image here - http://imgur.com/a/AGZ2f) that the MIL bought my husband when he first moved out of the house in 2002!!! It's been used 4-5 times a week for the last 15 years! It still works perfectly, I reckon we should get another 5+ years out of it. We brought it with us when we moved here 8 years back and have been using it with an Australian power adapter since then. And it has held up pretty well. Honestly, I always wanted one of these fancy rice cookers but I hate buying appliances that take up permanent bench space in the kitchen. This is a basic 5-cup model. But there are models with double walled pot, non-stick coating etc that perform admirably at 1/4 the price.

Tip for perfect rice: Wash the rice 3-4 times, it's gets some starch out and soak it for 10-15 mins before cooking.

I use a $14 rice cooker from K-mart. It cooks rice under 40 mins and has only 2 functions, cook or keep warm (push down to cook and when ready the switch springs back up to the keep warm function). Cooks rice perfectly every time

For what it's worth, there was a stack of JKT-S18A at Costco Moorabbin for $549.99. About $500 more than I personally would pay for a rice cooker, but I have to admit it looked good. 10 cup induction, with a really heavy pot.

  • Personally I rather spend $279 on a steam oven like the https://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=we…

From my experience with rice cookers and the steam overn, the steam oven cooks oven way better (albeit it takes about 50mins).
Not only that, this oven can do way more than cook rice, its a grill, a small oven, a toaster etc.. If you want it for pizza its ok but not great.
When cooking rice, you wash 1 cup of rice then put it in a bowl with about 1.25 cups of salted water, put it on steam and wauit for 50 mins. Fluff it up and presto!
If you have some old rice in the freezer, just place it in the oven and steam for 15m.

  • Choice reviewed rice cookers and gave this one a score of 83%. It didn't make the list of recommended rice cookers

    • What did, that's made in Japan?

      • No made in Japan rice cookers made the recommended list

        • This seems surprising, the Tiger seems to be universally loved.

Seeing this deal being very popular by the amount of up-votes, it is $280 after the "CMUM20" 20% off ebay code at Grays Online.

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Tiger-3-in-1-10-Cups-Electric-Ric…

Current stock count says 7 left on eBay listing.

    • That's why I came here….. No one has a review though, just garbage talk as usual..

Anyway ended up buying one just then so YAY!!!!!

    • JBA the old one right? Also isn't Greys a reseller of imported goods and refurbished?

      • amazon listings suggest the JBA-T18A model was initially available back in 2012 or 2013? so, sort of old…?

and Grays Online sell both refurbished and brand new products (see their listings), and both local and imported goods.

      • Yes, the new ones start with JAX. I bought a JAX-S10A from Appliance Central for $300 delivered. Ordered it before lunch one day and received it before lunch the following day. The hype is to be believed. It certainly cooks beautifully fluffy rice and great porridge with any type of addition you wish to put in. The main thing I love is having my oats/porridge cooked and ready for me to eat in the morning because of the timer settings and then pre-setting it to cook my rice for dinner later that day.

        • Good spot, does seem to be the cheapest for that model. Wonder if it's some shonky Chinese rebadge / import or the real deal.

        • +1

@hamwhisperer: I've lodged the warranty card with Tiger Japan. Box says made in Japan, unit says made in Japan. Catalogue for other Tiger products in the box is in Japanese. Appliance Central is a Betta Home Living bricks & mortar store in Villawood NSW. I doubt highly they're selling dodgy units.

        • @carlenet: Good move, might snap one up, I think it's the cheapest price at $300 for that model.
